Europe’s right-wingers don’t want to help Sudanese refugees find safety. They argue that it’s Africa’s business, and the responsibility of Sudan’s 7 neighbours to help out. Well, that’s exactly what those African counties have been doing - providing shelter and assistance to over 100,000 fleeing the conflict, despite (some of them) being in the grip of their own humanitarian and security crises.

SOUTH AFRICA WANTS ITS DIAMONDS BACK

The plundering of Africa was rubbed in our faces during the recent coronation of Charles III. That crown, that sceptre - all studded with jewels taken without consent from the continent… including one of the most impressive diamonds ever found. South Africans say it’s time to hand the stones back.

EAST DRC: MORE TROOPS COMING…

SADC - a bloc of southern African states - has decided to send troops to eastern DRC. The region is being contested by rebel groups that have terrorised the civilian population, with many fleeing. East African nations under the EAC umbrella have already deployed forces there. These have clawed back some of the areas captured by the insurgents. It’s hoped there will be strategic coordination between the SADC and EAC operations, with the additional boots on the ground proving decisive.

Many welcome the move as a sign of African solidarity and cooperation. Others see it as a case of external meddling. Let us know your views in the comments.

TERROR IN TUNISIA

A lone gunman has killed 4 people in a shooting rampage near a synagogue in Tunisia. Hundreds of pilgrims were celebrating an annual Jewish holiday. The victims - two worshippers and two police officers - were Tunisian, Tunisian-Israeli and French-Israeli. The Ghriba synagogue on Djerba Island - a tourist hotspot 500km south of the capital - attracts many Jewish pilgrims from Europe and Israel. It was previously targeted by al-Qaeda, who truck-bombed it in 2002 - killing 21.

'THEY SET OUT TO DESTROY US'

Keeping African countries underdeveloped was the main goal when European imperialists carved up the continent. Former African Union representative, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao, pulls no punches in explaining the blatant ripping and stitching of nations. There was little regard for existing political entities, historical relationships, alliances or rivalries. Even basic geography wasn’t taken into account, creating new geopolitical tensions and fragmented nations without any real power on the world stage.

KEVIN HART: MEDIA MISLEADS ABOUT AFRICA

US actor Kevin Hart points the finger at the mainstream media for warping his perception of Africa. He said the reality, when he visited, was totally different. Instead of having to be on guard, he felt right at home. He accuses the media of perpetuating a misleading and damaging image of Africa by only focusing on the bad things that happen - essentially running a negative PR campaign. The message is clear: ditch the mainstream for African Stream, and judge the REAL Africa for yourself!

BRITISH MEDDLING AND AFRICAN CIVIL WARS

Africa’s got bad rep when it comes to civil wars. Why does it have so many? Sudan’s slipping into another as we speak. Well, part of the trouble - a big part - is the mess the British made of things when they occupied our lands. African Stream’s Ahmed Ghoneim - reporting from London - looks at why their colonialism made civil wars more likely in Africa.

RACE AND IQ

Although race science or scientific racism has been repeatedly debunked, the idea that certain races are inherently more intelligent than others is as far-fetched as it is ignorant. A 1977 New York Times article which sensationally claimed Blacks have below average IQs which is why many fall below the poverty line was discredited by US political commentator Noam Chomsky, who pushed back against such offensive thinking.

Here, he explains that if environmental factors are equalised and socioeconomic disparities are removed, then IQ differences disappear. The supposed science of race is at least as old as slavery and colonialism, and it was considered conventional wisdom in many western countries until recently. In apartheid South Africa, the idea that each race had its own characteristics and intellectual ability was part of the justification for the system of exploitative white rule.

Ultimately, race and intelligence have deeper layers than the mere colour of skin.

US BOOTS TO STAY IN SOMALIA

US lawmakers have voted overwhelmingly to maintain an American military presence in Somalia. A passionate speech by Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz claiming the current mission has no positive impact - and is likely counterproductive - didn’t convince the House, which voted 102-321 against his motion to exit the Horn of African nation. Why do you think he failed to win lawmakers over?

BOKO’S PATH TO TERROR

Niger’s army says it’s detained almost 1,400 Boko Haram fighters since March. The Islamist militants have been fleeing into the country from neighbouring Nigeria, amid clashes with rival terrorist group ISWAP.

Boko Haram has terrorised north-eastern Nigeria for over a decade. It’s blamed for more than 20,000 civilian deaths and the displacement of some 2-million people. The group gained global notoriety in 2014, when it abducted 276 schoolgirls in Chibok.

We look at the factors that led to Boko Haram’s rise - from colonialism and Nigerian politics, to Western-led wars.

US MEDIA: MIND CONTROL

Next time Africa’s accused of lacking in the democracy department, think of this clip. It shows what look like scenes from a film set in a dystopian future. In fact, it shows real-world, present-day US presenters reading near-identical noscripts across multiple outlets. The stations belong to the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns or operates 59 Fox affiliates, 41 ABC affiliates, 30 CBS affiliates, 25 NBC affiliates, nine Univision affiliates, and others. No, democracy does not die in darkness - but in the brightness of American television screens.
