AFRICAN SISTER PUTS MACRON IN HIS PLACE

Watch the moment a young African woman stands up to the president of France. Kenyan activist Adelle Onyango went viral at the end of 2021 with a passionate address, confronting Emmanuel Macron - who was present - with some hard truths. It’s well worth another watch. She says until the ex-colonial power acknowledges the pain it has inflicted and made genuine amends, there can be no healing and no trust. It’s a beautiful moment, but did Macron learn anything from it?

Talk about whitewashing history! A Ghanaian school textbook is presenting colonialism as anything but a brutal occupation. Instead, the publication called “A History of Ghana for Basic Schools” paints a rosy picture, fails to mention slavery, and says the Portuguese and British were only after gold. Listen to author and journalist Afua Hirsch express her disgust, after getting her hands on the outrageous book that’s used by teachers in the West African country.

SUDAN: 7-DAY CEASEFIRE - CAN IT HOLD?

Can Sudan’s generals refrain from fighting for 7 days? That’s what they’ve signed up for - in a ceasefire deal brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia, who say they have a ‘monitoring mechanism’ in place. The pause in the fighting its essential to allow humanitarian aid in, with thousands of injured citizens and almost a million displaced. Every previous ceasefire has failed, but even if this one holds for the agreed time, will it lead to a more lasting peace?

CAMEROON DAY UNITY CALLS

Cameroonians from different walks of life joined together to call for peace and unity as the country marked its 51st National Day. In recent years, the West African nation has been rocked by deadly violence between government forces and militants from the country’s anglophone region. The rebels want to secede from the majority-francophone country due to what they say is the marginalization of their region by the central government. Since violence broke out in 2016, some 6,000 people have been killed and nearly 800,000 displaced. The conflict is hurting the country’s economy, affecting important sectors like cocoa production. Cameroon is the fifth-largest cocoa producer in the world.

FOOTBALL STAR ABUSED AGAIN!

Another sickening case of racist abuse in top-flight football. Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. targeted by monkey chants in his side's 1-0 defeat to Valencia. It was so bad his manager declared Spain’s LaLiga has a racism problem. Although not according to its president, Javier Tebas, who lashed out at the player. What??? Meanwhile, police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged incident, but can racism in football ever be defeated?

CHINA FAZES US IN AFRICA

China has turned Africa into a battleground. That’s according to former commander of US Africa Command, Stephen Townsend.
He claims Beijing is challenging American interests by building much-needed infrastructure across the continent, like roads, ports and airports. Although the four-star general failed to explain exactly why that's a threat. Obviously, US concerns have little to do with the interests of Africans.

Finland is ranked the happiest country in the world - and a good conscience goes a long way towards that. It’s just returned sacred stones stolen from Namibia’s Ovambo people in the late 19th century. Could Helsinki’s example inspire a 21st century trend? We very much hope so.

Britain and Somaliland

Britain has long supported the breakaway de facto state of Somaliland and funded its security forces. However, after pro-Somalia demonstrations broke out, some of those are now accused of atrocities by Human Rights Watch. We look at why the UK is so keen to back the separatist region, where renewed violence has displaced hundreds of thousands.

We fixed it for you, Bloomberg.

What your opinion piece fails to give adequate weight to is crippling debt, political assassinations, resource theft, the ongoing impact of slavery and colonisation, and neo-colonialism. THAT’S what America (and co.) has ‘done’ for the Global South before and since WWII. Thanks.

US POLICE
RACISM SCANDAL

Three years since the murder of George Flyod at the hands of Minneapolis officers, accusations of systemic racism continue to plague US police departments. A texting scandal has rocked a Californian city, where officers joked about harming Black residents, including the local Black mayor.
It reflects decades of systemic racism by American police against its Black citizenry.
