Mayotte: African Not French
France should apologise for its colonial past. That was the message, loud and clear, from the chair of the largest grouping of nations after NATO - the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). At a recent summit, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, also made it clear that he regards the East African island of Mayotte as falling under Comoran, not French, sovereignty. And he scolded Paris for failing to do enough to protect the rights of indigenous peoples in other colonised overseas territories, such as the South Pacific’s New Caledonia, whose Karnak inhabitants still struggle for representation.

BRICS: EYEBALLS AND ALL
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is not backing down over the upcoming BRICS summit set to be hosted in South Africa and has put to bed the speculation that the summit will take place virtually and not in person.
A virtual summit was being touted as a nice face-saving way out of a dilemma: Vladimir Putin, who’s due to attend, is wanted by the International Criminal Court as part of its investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine; and Pretoria as an ICC signatory, is obliged to arrest him - something ANC leaders have vowed won’t happen.
So with Ramaphosa shooting down the idea of a virtual BRICS get-together, the big question now is - will Putin still come?
The Russian leader is one of only four non-Africans out of the 52 people ever to have been indicted by the ICC.

Punitive US sanctions have spurred some countries to move away from using the US dollar exclusively for their foreign reserves. That’s the finding of a study by Invesco, an American investment management company.
According to the report, countries have also begun repatriating their gold reserves from Western countries to their own central banks.
This development tallies with recent calls for African countries to de-dollarize - that is, to reduce their use of the US currency in intra-African trade transactions.
From presidents to political activists and scholars, a dominant message in recent months has been that it’s high time for African nations to trade with each other using their own currencies.
Kenya's President William Ruto is leading the charge for African countries to ditch the greenback. But the trend is part of a wider phenomenon, with similar calls coming from other Global South nations and groupings, such as BRICS.

With France still reeling from the police killing of a teenager with Algerian roots in the Paris suburbs, officers have unleashed more violence on the African diaspora - this time, at a memorial event in the capital for a man who died in police custody back in 2016. His brother was among those on the receiving-end of the officers’ batons. African Stream was filming when the police moved in on the gathering.

SUDAN WAR: AIRSTRIKE KILLS 22
The city of Omdurman has become the latest flashpoint in Sudan’s civil war. A stronghold of the Rapid Support Forces, it was targeted by army jets this weekend in the deadliest attack of its kind since the start of the conflict. Twenty-two people were killed - the army claiming it took out rebel fighters. Omdurman is critical to the RSF’s operations. The paramilitary uses the West of the city to bring in reinforcements from Darfur.

Sudan peace talks got off to a rocky start, with one of the warring parties - the Sudanese military - refusing to participate. It objects to the negotiations being chaired by Kenya, which it accuses of harbouring RSF rivals. The paramilitary itself only sent a representative to the talks. Some progress was made, though: consultations will be held with the African Union on potentially sending in East African peacekeepers to ensure civilians are kept safe and receive aid.

As a result, they suffered a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Adwa. Losses in the Italian army amounted to over 6,000 killed, and around 1,500 wounded soldiers were forced to retreat into Eritrea. Our sister Tanaïssa breaks down how Ethiopia accomplished this feat, which caused the incumbent government of Prime Minister Di Rudini to resign on this day, July 12th, in 1896.

We’ve seen a string of Western leaders lecture Africa about human rights. But their astonishing hypocrisy doesn’t go unnoticed.
The most morbid example being the skulls of Africans kept by foreign museums and their refusal to repatriate them. Many are the heads of those who fought against brutal colonial oppression. Often jam-jarred and given a front-row seat for the public to gawp at.
One of the most well-known is Chief Mangi Mali, from Tanzania, whose remains have been held by Germany’s Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
It’s estimated up to 95 per cent of Africa’s cultural heritage is hoarded by major museums outside Africa - with France having nearly 100,000 artefacts. However, the fight to bring them back home continues.
Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao is calling for a worldwide alliance of Black people to fight for justice and reparations.
And here she is doing what she does best.
Laying out the facts plain and simple at a recent National Action Network Convention.

According to Malcolm X, they became strong under Mao Zedong and are now a force to be reckoned with - culturally, economically and militarily.
