Mayotte: African Not French

France should apologise for its colonial past. That was the message, loud and clear, from the chair of the largest grouping of nations after NATO - the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). At a recent summit, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, also made it clear that he regards the East African island of Mayotte as falling under Comoran, not French, sovereignty. And he scolded Paris for failing to do enough to protect the rights of indigenous peoples in other colonised overseas territories, such as the South Pacific’s New Caledonia, whose Karnak inhabitants still struggle for representation.

Bushmeat Market Tour

For many Africans, bushmeat is an essential part of their diet - and, some would argue, far superior to the industrially-farmed livestock popular around the world. Whether it’s crocodile, monitor lizard, porcupine, grasscutter, monkey, snake or pangolin - it can transform your ordinary jollof rice into a prized delicacy.

Watch as we visit a Nigerian bushmeat market and chat to its lively sellers, operating in plain sight of day, despite the authorities banning their trade over health and safety concerns.

BRICS: EYEBALLS AND ALL

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is not backing down over the upcoming BRICS summit set to be hosted in South Africa and has put to bed the speculation that the summit will take place virtually and not in person.

A virtual summit was being touted as a nice face-saving way out of a dilemma: Vladimir Putin, who’s due to attend, is wanted by the International Criminal Court as part of its investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine; and Pretoria as an ICC signatory, is obliged to arrest him - something ANC leaders have vowed won’t happen.

So with Ramaphosa shooting down the idea of a virtual BRICS get-together, the big question now is - will Putin still come?

The Russian leader is one of only four non-Africans out of the 52 people ever to have been indicted by the ICC.

Punitive US sanctions have spurred some countries to move away from using the US dollar exclusively for their foreign reserves. That’s the finding of a study by Invesco, an American investment management company.

According to the report, countries have also begun repatriating their gold reserves from Western countries to their own central banks.

This development tallies with recent calls for African countries to de-dollarize - that is, to reduce their use of the US currency in intra-African trade transactions.

From presidents to political activists and scholars, a dominant message in recent months has been that it’s high time for African nations to trade with each other using their own currencies.

Kenya's President William Ruto is leading the charge for African countries to ditch the greenback. But the trend is part of a wider phenomenon, with similar calls coming from other Global South nations and groupings, such as BRICS.

It’s a response to what many see as the weaponisation of the dollar by the US government to enforce its foreign policy objectives through the use of punitive, unilateral economic sanctions.  Critics point out that dependence on the dollar also leaves Global South nations at the mercy of US fiscal and economic policies, thereby robbing them of economic independence.

With France still reeling from the police killing of a teenager with Algerian roots in the Paris suburbs, officers have unleashed more violence on the African diaspora - this time, at a memorial event in the capital for a man who died in police custody back in 2016. His brother was among those on the receiving-end of the officers’ batons. African Stream was filming when the police moved in on the gathering.

REPARATIONS FOR SLAVERY

Will reparations ever be paid to descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States? Richard Sudan digs deeper and asks whether American politicians like President Joe Biden have been cynically using the issue of reparations to win votes, without any intention of taking real action.

FRANCE’S RACE PROBLEM EXPLAINED

France has a problem with race: it refuses to recognise its existence! While a policy of colourblindness - treating everybody equally, regardless of skin colour - sounds great in theory, the way France has been doing it has proved a disaster in practice. African Stream's Roqaiya explains how it’s actually enabled racism (the very thing it was designed to counter) to flourish in the country’s police force - with deadly consequences.

SUDAN’S ARMY BOYCOTTS
PEACE TALKS

Sudan peace talks got off to a rocky start, with one of the warring parties - the Sudanese military - refusing to participate. It objects to the negotiations being chaired by Kenya, which it accuses of harbouring RSF rivals. The paramilitary itself only sent a representative to the talks. Some progress was made, though: consultations will be held with the African Union on potentially sending in East African peacekeepers to ensure civilians are kept safe and receive aid.

ROAD RAGE: VICE PREZ’S MEN ATTACK

A video showing four police officers, who are part of the deputy president’s security guard, assaulting motorists has sparked public outrage in South Africa. The officers are facing charges of assault, while the deputy president’s office has distanced itself from the incident. The incident is reminiscent of South Africa’s dark past where apartheid police used to beat Africans with impunity which is why it has caused such an uproar online.

HOW ETHIOPIA BEAT ITALIAN COLONIALISTS

Have you ever wondered why Ethiopia was never colonised? The Italians had a good old go at it. But they were outsmarted by the African side. As a result, they suffered a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Adwa. Losses in the Italian army amounted to over 6,000 killed, and around 1,500 wounded soldiers were forced to retreat into Eritrea. Our sister Tanaïssa breaks down how Ethiopia accomplished this feat, which caused the incumbent government of Prime Minister Di Rudini to resign on this day, July 12th, in 1896.

AFRICAN SKULLS IN EUROPE

We’ve seen a string of Western leaders lecture Africa about human rights. But their astonishing hypocrisy doesn’t go unnoticed.

The most morbid example being the skulls of Africans kept by foreign museums and their refusal to repatriate them. Many are the heads of those who fought against brutal colonial oppression. Often jam-jarred and given a front-row seat for the public to gawp at.
One of the most well-known is Chief Mangi Mali, from Tanzania, whose remains have been held by Germany’s Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

It’s estimated up to 95 per cent of Africa’s cultural heritage is hoarded by major museums outside Africa - with France having nearly 100,000 artefacts. However, the fight to bring them back home continues.

Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao is calling for a worldwide alliance of Black people to fight for justice and reparations.
And here she is doing what she does best.
Laying out the facts plain and simple at a recent National Action Network Convention.

MALCOLM X: ONLY STRONG AFRICA WILL GET RESPECT

The Chinese have long faced racism but they also now command respect. According to Malcolm X, they became strong under Mao Zedong and are now a force to be reckoned with - culturally, economically and militarily. Malcolm X believed there was a lesson here for us Africans: unite! Just like the Chinese state could unite a population of over 1 billion, Africa needs a unified state to unite our growing population of over 1 billion! Watch him make the point by explaining how a particular racist saying quickly fell out of use once the Chinese became powerful.

TULSA MASSACRE VICTIMS DENIED COMPENSATION

A US court has thrown out a case seeking to pay reparations to the last three living victims of 1921's Tulsa massacre. Hundreds of Africans in America were killed when a White mob invaded a booming Black town. Thousands of homes and businesses were razed and looted.

The ruling has been slammed as making a mockery of the American government’s talk of justice for the country’s diaspora community, especially when its military spending is astronomical while its reparations spending is zero.

Thinking Beyond Colonial Boundaries

Ever contemplated the artificial nature of African borders? Here's a little history from Ghanaian Journalist Kwesi Pratt

Picture this: European leaders gathered around a map, yet no African was present. They casually drew pencil lines, made dots and dashes, which have now become our national boundaries. It's a shared past that is undeniable. But what about the future? Kwesi Pratt emphasises the importance of pan-Africanism - a beacon of unity in our diverse continent.

These borders shouldn't be seen as barriers, but as bridges connecting our diverse cultures. With the shifting sands of global economic power, it raises an intriguing question: When is Africa's moment to rewrite history?

A thought worth contemplating.

Continued - Kenyans Rage At Tax Hikes

President William Ruto last month signed into law a finance bill, hoping to generate more than $2.1 billion a year for the government’s depleted coffers.  The Finance Act introduces new taxes and increases on basic goods such as fuel, food and mobile money transfers, as well as a controversial levy on all tax-payers to fund a housing scheme. The administration says the taxes will help to create jobs and reduce public borrowing.  But as soaring food prices pile pressure on households, many Kenyans say they are angered by Ruto’s government for not only failing to deliver on election promises to improve their economic situation, but also for overtaxing low-wage earners.

A Kenyan court ordered a suspension of the implementation of the legislation, pending a legal challenge, but the government has raised petrol prices anyway.  Although there is a cost of living crisis in many countries around the world, Kenya’s situation is atypical in that the government is introducing hefty additional taxes during an already devastating economic crisis.
