REMEMBERING SÉKOU TOURÉ

With our continent experiencing a renaissance in pan-African, anti-imperialist sentiment - as embodied in revolutions and new alliances in the Sahel - it’s an apt time to remember Guinea’s founding father, Ahmed Sékou Touré, who joined the ancestors on this day in 1984.

As a child, he attended a Koranic school - before proceeding to a French technical institution in the capital, Conakry, in his teens. However, his stay there was short-lived, as he was expelled less than a year after admission for leading a student protest.

This led him to join the labour market at an early age. His first job was as a clerk at a French-owned company in 1940. He then joined the country’s postal and telecommunications services provider the following year.

In 1953, he helped coordinate a major labour strike, which lasted 76 days and resulted in a significant victory for the country’s workers, who secured a 20% pay rise and a 40-hour working week.
12
Continued……His track record in the labour sector helped cement his role as an emerging anti-colonial leader. In the 1950s, he won several political offices before becoming mayor of Conakry in 1955 and a member of the French National Assembly in 1956.

He used those positions to mobilise his fellow citizens towards the goal of national emancipation, rejecting attempts by Paris to have the West African nation remain part of the so-called French Community.

In 1958, Guineans voted overwhelmingly to sever ties with France, despite Paris’ threats to end all forms of economic and technical support for Guinea.

Upon becoming president, Touré embarked on a massive economic and social reform programme to wean the country off dependency on the former colonial power.

But his revolutionary exploits went beyond the borders of his homeland. On his death anniversary, we look at his achievements and why he was admired by pan-Africans worldwide.

SUDAN WARRING PARTIES DENYING AID ACCESS TO MILLIONS

With half of war-torn Sudan’s citizens suffering from acute hunger, both sides have been weaponising humanitarian aid - by denying access.

According to the UN, the proxy war has displaced a population that’s ‘greater than the entire population of Switzerland,’ uprooting 12.5-million people. In December 2024, the International Rescue Committee reported that the war had created ‘the biggest humanitarian crisis ever recorded.’

The power struggle between allies-turned-foes started on 15 April 2023. Experts say the exact death toll is hard to determine but is largely underestimated. In May 2024, US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello said that, after a year of fighting, as many as 150,000 had been k*lled.
💔2😈2🤬1
Starting on 1 April, citizens of the United States and more than 30 other countries planning to visit Namibia must obtain a visa at an airport or border crossing.

The move is widely seen as a response to Western countries' continued refusal to reciprocate Namibia's visa-free entry policy for their citizens.

For instance, the US government locked out all African countries from the 2025 US visa-waiver programme despite many countries on their continent allowing US citizens to enter their territories without visas.
🤩103
Continued……Further, a proposed US travel ban leaked to the media in recent weeks categorises many countries, including African ones, on a three-tier basis to denote the level of restrictions. More than 20 African countries appear in the second and third categories, where travel would be allowed, but under severe scrutiny and restrictions. However, Libya, Sudan and Somalia are in tier 1, facing a complete ban on travel to the US.

The US has historically discriminated against visa applicants from Africa. In 2017, the Trump administration banned Libya, Somalia and Sudan. According to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, the US denied 57 per cent of African student visa applications in 2023 compared to 38 per cent for Asians and 8 per cent for Europeans.

BURUNDI PREZ: RWANDA PLANS TO ATTACK US!

Burundi’s President has told the BBC that he possesses ‘credible intelligence’ indicating that neighbouring Rwanda is planning an attack on his nation. Évariste Ndayishimiye further accused Kigali of harbouring Burundian conspirators involved in the unsuccessful coup attempt against the late former president, Pierre Nkurunziza (1964-2020), in 2015.

The two nations, which were once part of the Belgian-administered Ruanda-Urundi colony after World War I and later a UN trusteeship from 1946, have experienced ongoing tensions since their independence in 1962.
🤔6😈3👍1
Continued….. Ndayishimiye’s allegation could be linked to the ongoing war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, have seized significant territories in the mineral-rich North and South Kivu provinces, including the major cities of Goma and Bukavu. Burundian forces have been collaborating with Congolese troops, with around 10,000 soldiers deployed to the DRC as part of an East African Community regional force since October 2023. However, many of these troops withdrew in February following the rapid advances of M23, reportedly after sustaining heavy losses.

Additionally, Burundi is facing the challenge of accommodating over 120,000 Congolese refugees, which is putting a strain on relief resources in displacement camps, as reported by the UN’s World Food Programme.

In response, Kigali has labelled Ndayishimiye’s remarks ‘unfortunate.’ Rwanda’s foreign minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, posted on social-media platform X that the two countries are already engaged in discussions to ease the situation.

GHANA PURSUES MINERS IN ALLEGED U.S. ARMY UNIFORMS

Could Ghana be under the watchful eye of imperialist powers due to its budding friendship with the AES, the Alliance of Sahel States that includes Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger?

This question arises in light of a recent incident involving armed illegal gold miners allegedly blocking Ghanaian forestry officials from cracking down on their operations in the gold-rich Ashanti region’s forestry reserve. Locals refer to illicit gold mining as ‘galamsey.’

Investigative journalist Erastus Asare Donkor (@erastus4lif on X) shared photos on social media allegedly showing these ‘galamsey miners’ dressed in what seems to be US military attire (though there has been no official confirmation from Accra) and armed with military-grade assault rifles. Further reports indicate that forestry officials, along with security forces, have detained several illegal miners and seized weapons and excavators.

Since President John Mahama took office in January, the US embassy invited a group of Ghanaians, one of whom is a well-known blogger (@sikaofficial1 on X), for a meeting a few weeks ago. Another social media influencer (@gyaigyimii on X) recently posted an image filled displaying the EU flag, calling for ‘collaboration’ and ‘international support.’ Additionally, West African history enthusiast Tommy Miles (@tommymiles on X) recently uncovered an anti-China bot farm operating in Ghana, which he suspects is part of a coordinated US digital strategy to undermine China-Ghana relations. Mahama has publicly advocated for enhanced trade with China, Ghana’s biggest trading partner.

Mahama also shocked many by revealing that declassified US documents indicate the CIA was behind the 1966 coup that ousted Ghana’s first president, the visionary Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah (1909-72). He made this statement on 6 March during Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations. Just two days later, he began a tour of the Sahel states, which he described as a trust-building mission between the anti-imperialist AES and the Western-aligned Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

SOUTH SUDAN ISSUES ARREST WARRANT FOR VP RIEK MACHAR

On 26 March, a convoy of 20 heavily armed vehicles forced their way into South Sudan First Vice President Riek Machar’s residence in the capital city, Juba.

The country’s Defence Minister and the Chief of National Security personally delivered an arrest warrant to Machar, who also serves as the leader of the opposition party, the Sudan’s People Liberation Movement/Army - In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO). According to a Facebook post by Reath Muoch Tang, acting chairperson for the party’s National Committee on Foreign Relations, the convoy disarmed Machar’s bodyguards. The party split in 2013 from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement that governs the country.

Tang noted the warrant contained ‘unclear charges.’ However, reports indicate Machar is under house arrest for alleged complicity in the conflict between the army and the White Army militia in the Upper Nile State in the country’s northeast.

Continued….. Many have expressed concern in recent weeks that South Sudan is descending into yet another civil war that involves the support of Uganda. So far, reports say bombardments using chemical weapons have k*lled civilians. The fighting has forced 50,000 people to flee, according to the UN.

Rights groups have condemned the k*llings, and the UN has warned that arresting Machar, who many consider as wielding influence over the White Army because it fought alongside him in the 2013 civil war, threatens an already fragile peace agreement signed in 2018. The failure to implement the deal is regarded as the instability’s leading cause.

The civil war in South Sudan started in December 2013, lasted 5 years and k*lled over 400,000 people. That war and subsequent clashes have internally and externally displaced over 4 million South Sudanese. Moreover, the UN estimated in November 2024 that 57 per cent of South Sudanese will suffer acute hunger through its ‘lean season’ starting in April.

Some foreign embassies have scaled down or even closed operations amidst the recent fighting.

ACTIONAID: IT’S RICH NATIONS THAT OWE AFRICA!

A new report by ActionAid - noscriptd ‘Who Owes Who?’ - challenges the assumption that it’s Africa that’s a net debtor to the world. It argues that rich nations owe a ‘climate debt’ worth $107 trillion to developing ones, which feel the brunt of the West’s industrialised polluting of the planet. Moreover, debt-burdened African nations in particular have to resort to adopting policies that worsen the climate crisis in order to service IMF and other loans - and much of this debt wouldn’t have been necessary if the colonial era (together with ongoing exploitation) hadn’t bled Africa dry. We spoke to ActionAid’s head of programmes. He told us a simple solution would be to forgive Africa’s debt. Have a watch and let us know what you think of his arguments.

In a move that Pan-African political party Economic Freedom Fighters (@effsouthafrica) has described as provocative and hostile, US President Donald Trump has nominated Leo Brent Bozell III, an outspoken Z*onist, as US ambassador to South Africa.

Trump announced the nomination on 26 March on his Truth Social account.

Bozell, the president and founder of the Media Research Center (MRC), a right-wing media monitoring outlet, has not only spoken in support of Israelis but raised funds for organisations with links to the Israeli military and illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
🤮10
Continued…. Many see Trump's choice of Bozell as a dig at the South African government, a long-time supporter of the Palestinian liberation struggle. In the last two years, the country has been a leading voice in condemning the Israeli onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza, even launching a landmark g*nocide case in late December 2023 against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Trump's latest move will likely further strain the already frosty ties between Washington and Pretoria. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has taken several hostile steps against South Africa, including suspending aid to the country over discredited allegations that South Africa discriminates against and mistreats white South Africans. He also offered white settlers refuge in the US. On 14 March, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Ebrahim Rasool (@AmbassadoRasool on X), South Africa's ambassador to Washington, a ‘race-baiting politician’ and ‘persona non grata’ for criticising Trump's politics.
