The country’s Defence Minister and the Chief of National Security personally delivered an arrest warrant to Machar, who also serves as the leader of the opposition party, the Sudan’s People Liberation Movement/Army - In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO). According to a Facebook post by Reath Muoch Tang, acting chairperson for the party’s National Committee on Foreign Relations, the convoy disarmed Machar’s bodyguards. The party split in 2013 from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement that governs the country.
Tang noted the warrant contained ‘unclear charges.’ However, reports indicate Machar is under house arrest for alleged complicity in the conflict between the army and the White Army militia in the Upper Nile State in the country’s northeast.

Rights groups have condemned the k*llings, and the UN has warned that arresting Machar, who many consider as wielding influence over the White Army because it fought alongside him in the 2013 civil war, threatens an already fragile peace agreement signed in 2018. The failure to implement the deal is regarded as the instability’s leading cause.
The civil war in South Sudan started in December 2013, lasted 5 years and k*lled over 400,000 people. That war and subsequent clashes have internally and externally displaced over 4 million South Sudanese. Moreover, the UN estimated in November 2024 that 57 per cent of South Sudanese will suffer acute hunger through its ‘lean season’ starting in April.

It argues that rich nations owe a ‘climate debt’ worth $107 trillion to developing ones, which feel the brunt of the West’s industrialised polluting of the planet. Moreover, debt-burdened African nations in particular have to resort to adopting policies that worsen the climate crisis in order to service IMF and other loans - and much of this debt wouldn’t have been necessary if the colonial era (together with ongoing exploitation) hadn’t bled Africa dry. Kémi Séba (@KemiSeba1 on X), founder of the Pan-African organisation @UrgencesPanaf (on X), flew into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on 24 March for a ceremony to be granted an honorary doctorate degree at the Bel Campus University in Kinshasa.
He said it would have been one of the greatest accolades of his life.
However, upon his arrival, the university’s founder explained that the DRC Ministry of Higher and University Education had postponed the ceremony. Séba said he understood it was not merely postponed but cancelled due to interference from France.

According to Maud-Salomé Ekila Bofunda (@Ekilaaa on X), spokesperson of Urgences Panafricanistes, ‘The reasons given by the Ministry of Higher Education are clear: Diplomatic pressure from France, which does not approve of the DRC, which it considers a friendly country, allowing a Congolese university to award this type of noscript to a person who ‘acts’ against France and makes anti-French comments.’
In 2024, France revoked Séba’s citizenship for allegedly working against French interests. However, it came after he burned his French passport.

Although the United Arab Emirates-backed paramilitary, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), is responsible for most of the war’s atrocities and is accused of g*nocide, many, including the UN, have charged both the RSF and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) of grave human-rights abuses and ethnically motivated k*llings.
The 24 March airstrike on a weekly market in Turra village in North Darfur follows a similar military airstrike on another market in December 2024 that killed at least 100 civilians. Emergency Lawyers, a network that documents human rights abuses, said the army deliberately targeting civilians is a ‘systematic war crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.’

Continued……In October 2024, the group reported continuous aerial bombardment by the SAF in RSF-occupied areas in El Gezira, Sennar, White Nile state, North Kordofan, and West and North Darfur, had k*lled an estimated 500 civilians in just one week.
Meanwhile, the armed forces have said the allegations are ‘incorrect,’ arguing it has only exercised its ‘constitutional and legal right to deal with hostile targets.’ Their statements contradict the reports on the ground, where some of the identified victims were unarmed civilians, including children, women and the elderly.
