Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (AIR) Laboratory at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) announces the availability of a Ph.D. position in Deep Learning for Robotics.
The selected Ph.D. student will carry out research on developing novel neural networks to fuse various sensory data streams, derive semantics and generate policies to predict and prevent failures in the context of robot imitation learning of human manipulation actions. The research will be performed within the PARTNER (Predicting and Preventing Unsafe Situations for Service Robots) project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). The project is in close collaboration with Halmstad University (HH) and aims to design and develop an effective system for service robots to predict and prevent unsafe states.
The student will be employed by the AIR Lab at ITU. There is a certain possibility that the student will receive a Ph.D. degree from both universities (i.e. a double degree). The selected Ph.D. student will be placed at the AIR Lab where Assoc. Prof. Sanem Sariel will be the main supervisor and guide the daily work. The PHD work will be in close collaboration with Asst. Prof. Eren Erdal Aksoy as academic supervisor at HH. It is foreseen that shorter periods of time will be spent at HH to perform various robotics experiments.
The selected Ph.D. student will be responsible for conducting research within the PARTNER project and for participating in the required Ph.D. course activities. The employment also includes teaching responsibilities corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time. Applicant will be part of an international workgroup and an English-speaking environment.
This is a full-time position available from January 2020 for a period of three years with a possibility of a further extension, subject to satisfactory progress of the Ph.D. study and funding availability. Enough resources to fund experiments and conference travels are available.
Requirements
The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in robotics, computer science, machine learning, mathematics, physics, or a related engineering discipline. A strong background in robotics, computer vision, machine learning, or software engineering is desirable. Excellent programming skills, analytical problem solving and organizational abilities are required. Prior practical experience in ROS and deep learning is a plus.

To this end, we conduct chronic electrophysiological recordings in the visual cortex of macaques and mice, while they are engaged in the same, naturalistic foraging task in a virtual environment. The lab is jointly headed by Marieke Schölvinck and Martha Nari Havenith, and funded by the Max Planck Society. In the lab, postdocs and PhD students focus on experiments in either mouse or monkey, but intensely work together to ensure that we constantly align and mutually learn from experiments across species.
We are now looking for a postdoc to lead the mouse side of the lab, while developing their own ideas and research interests. Ideally, we would like you to start in Spring 2020. The appointment is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension by another two years; the salary is in accordance with the regulations for academic personnel.

CogniGron, founded in 2018, is an interdisciplinary initiative at the intersection of computer science, AI, machine learning, computational neuroscience and material science. With 10 new professorships and 30 PhD stipends, CogniGron stands out as one of the most visible scientific investments in the Netherlands in recent times.
The *first position* is defined within the European H2020 project „Memory technologies with multi-scale time constants for neuromorphic architectures (MeM-Scales)“, whose central objective is to build (analog, spiking) neuromorphic microchips which can adapt to online input signals which display many timescales. Since microchip physics will deliver only a few physical timescales, collective computational phenomena will have to be explored in order to realize the long-range memory timescales required by many tasks. Since at this point, numerous but hardly explored options are "in the air" for computational timescale management, this position offers much freedom to engage in original work.
The *second position* is funded through university budgets and is independent of specific project demands. The position holder will enjoy unusual freedom, paired with intellectual risk, to contribute to the ultimate scientific goal of Jaeger’s group: a unifying formal theory of information processing in nonlinear dynamical systems - regardless of whether they are similar to biological brains, or rest on non-neural dynamical phenomena in novel material substrates. Obviously, such a unifying theory, which would play for neuromorphic computing a similarly central role as Turing computability theory plays for digital computing, is not in sight and may be even not possible. However, many mini-revolutions in mathematical denoscription formats are possible, and needed.
Each position will be filled by either a PhD student with a 4-year contract, or by a Postdoc with a 3-year contract. The only selection criterion is qualification (product of intellectual audacity, analytical thinking power, and relevant mathematical and factual knowledge).

Candidates must have experience in quantitative methods, the use of computational, statistical or data scientific approaches applied to social science or interdisciplinary research settings, and data integration involving spatial and non-spatial data. They are expected to bring particular interest in interdisciplinary research and to participate in and develop future interdisciplinary projects. The candidate will work on a project about long-term change in small rural places in the United States, making use of a combination of public and restricted-use demographic, economic, and spatial data, much of it housed in the Rocky Mountain Research Data Center, one in a network of Federal Statistical Research Data Centers managed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
Postdoctoral researchers will work at the CUPC in the Institute of Behavioral Science, will participate in relevant working groups, regularly attend and present within the CUPC speaker series, and participate in other CUPC workshops and mentoring activities.

Sussex Neuroscience is now inviting applications for September 2020 entry to our funded PhD Programme, which includes a first year of laboratory rotations and taught modules. These support a transition into neuroscience from other science disciplines such as physics and computing, and provide students with the opportunity to both broaden and deepen their experience of different neuroscience fields and techniques. More than 40 supervisors are offering research projects in topics including molecular & cellular biology, neurophysiology, learning, behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, psychology, development, sensory systems, computational neuroscience, functional imaging, neurodegeneration and translational neuroscience (the interface between fundamental and clinical neuroscience).

Sussex Neuroscience is now inviting applications for September 2020 entry to our funded PhD Programme, which includes a first year of laboratory rotations and taught modules. These support a transition into neuroscience from other science disciplines such as physics and computing, and provide students with the opportunity to both broaden and deepen their experience of different neuroscience fields and techniques. More than 40 supervisors are offering research projects in topics including molecular & cellular biology, neurophysiology, learning, behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, psychology, development, sensory systems, computational neuroscience, functional imaging, neurodegeneration and translational neuroscience (the interface between fundamental and clinical neuroscience).

Fully funded PhD position in Marine Robotics and SLAM for AUVs operating under the Arctic/Antarctic sea-ice
Rationale:
Despite the considerable effort directed towards AUV navigation, a self-contained solution remains a key challenge. Due to the cumulative error that inertial navigation experiences with time, AUVs typically require an external navigation support or regular surfacing to obtain GPS fixes and limit the error [1], which options can be undesirable/unavailable in certain applications (e.g. deep-water and/or under-ice deployments). In response to the presently limited navigation capability, this project will focus on the development of robust navigation techniques for high-powered AUVs that relying on on-board sensors and efficient algorithms will enable navigation in GPS-denied environments. SLAM is a powerful technique where a robot builds the map of the surrounding environment and concurrently localises itself within that map. Although SLAM has been proven to be effective for mobile robots operating in structured environments, the application of these techniques in the highly unstructured underwater domain is immature with outstanding challenges to be addressed. The candidate will be required to develop robust and computationally feasible in real-time sonar-based SLAM algorithms. Project
The PhD positions will develop within the project “Peripheral Olfactory Coding: Information Processing outside the Brain” funded by the Leverhulme Trust. This project will investigate early olfactory coding in the model system of the fruit fly Drosophila. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that one key element underlying odour object recognition are non-synaptic interactions between receptor neurons, i.e. information pre-processing outside the brain. Successful candidates will work in one of two areas, depending on interest: Single sensillum recordings (SSRs) on olfactory receptors or behavioural experiments in a wind tunnel. They will be involved in the entire work from experimental design, practical experimentation, selection and execution of data analysis and, depending on interest, computational interpretation in models. You will work closely with Dr Mario Pannunzi, Prof Thomas Nowotny and Prof George Kemenes on this project.
Candidate Requirements
Candidates should have an MSc or equivalent in natural sciences, ideally in the area of Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. In addition, strong analytical skills and fluency in English are essential for this project. Interest and skills to work in a multi-disciplinary and extensively networked project are important.

The Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), at the University of Essex, has a worldwide reputation as a multidisciplinary centre of quantitative social science research and as a producer of household panel data of the highest quality.
ISER is seeking to appoint two quantitative social scientists in sociology, demography or an allied field to the post of Senior Research Officer to contribute to the research programme of the ESRC-funded Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC). MiSoC, created in 1989, is one of the longest running ESRC-funded research centres in the UK. Since its inception, MiSoC's focus has been on analysing the behaviour of individuals and families and how they are shaped by policy and social and economic trends. Its research programme is wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary, and for this post we are looking for two candidates with strong backgrounds in the study of migration and social stratification who can contribute to research on migration, intergenerational mobility, and ethnic inequality as part of the 2019-2024 MiSoC programme.
Duties of the Role
The Institute is looking for candidates to work directly with MiSoC researchers to help prepare data, conduct quantitative analysis, and co-author excellent publications. The person appointed will also have their own coherent and fertile independent research agenda that is consistent with Strand 3 of the MiSoC programme, and should be able to demonstrate the potential to publish at the highest level.
This is a research position and there are no teaching duties associated with this post. Whilst it is a University standard expectation that post holders contribute to applications for external research funding at this level, applicants for this post will not be expected to generate income during the period of this appointment.
The post holder will also be expected to actively participate in ISER's departmental research culture including meetings, seminars and workshops.
