Postdoc position in mouse electrophysiology at Ernst Strungmann Institute (Frankfurt, Germany)

Hi all, we are hiring!

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to lead the mouse work of the Zero-Noise Lab at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience in Frankfurt, Germany.

The position

The Zero-Noise Lab investigates how neuronal population activity unfolds in real time during naturalistic behaviour, and how this compares between mouse and monkey. To this end, we conduct chronic electrophysiological recordings in the visual cortex of macaques and mice, while they are engaged in the same, naturalistic foraging task in a virtual environment. The lab is jointly headed by Marieke Schölvinck and Martha Nari Havenith, and funded by the Max Planck Society. In the lab, postdocs and PhD students focus on experiments in either mouse or monkey, but intensely work together to ensure that we constantly align and mutually learn from experiments across species.

We are now looking for a postdoc to lead the mouse side of the lab, while developing their own ideas and research interests. Ideally, we would like you to start in Spring 2020. The appointment is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension by another two years; the salary is in accordance with the regulations for academic personnel.

You

If you (are about to) hold a Ph.D., have experience with electrophysiological recordings in awake animals, and are eager to work in an interdisciplinary lab with multiple model species, we would love to hear from you! Additional skills that would be extremely valuable:

- Programming skills (Matlab and/or Python)

- Technical skills to build up an electrophysiology set-up

- Experience with behavioural training

How to apply

If you are interested and/or looking for more information about the job, please send an email to Marieke (marieke.scholvinck@esi-frankfurt.de) and Martha (marthanari.havenith@gmail.com) before December 15, 2019. In your email, please explain your background, what you expect from your postdoc, and why you want to join us in Frankfurt (including non-scientific reasons, if any – we like to get to know the human beings we work with!). The application remains open until the position is filled.

We look forward to hearing from you!
Martha and Marieke

2 PhD/Postdoc positions in theory of neuromorphic computing, Groningen, NL
H. Jaeger h.jaeger@rug.nl via googlegroups.com
In the group of Herbert Jaeger two fully funded positions are open for PhD students (4 year contract) or Postdocs (3 year contract). Both positions are about formal, theoretical analyses and algorithmic models of „neuromorphic“ computing in non-digital hardware (analog, unclocked, spiking microchips or even unconventional material substrates exhibiting relevant nonlinear dyanmical phenomena).

Herbert Jaeger’s group is embedded in the Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials Center (CogniGron, https://www.rug.nl/research/fse/cognitive-systems-and-materials/?lang=en). CogniGron, founded in 2018, is an interdisciplinary initiative at the intersection of computer science, AI, machine learning, computational neuroscience and material science. With 10 new professorships and 30 PhD stipends, CogniGron stands out as one of the most visible scientific investments in the Netherlands in recent times.

The *first position* is defined within the European H2020 project „Memory technologies with multi-scale time constants for neuromorphic architectures (MeM-Scales)“, whose central objective is to build (analog, spiking) neuromorphic microchips which can adapt to online input signals which display many timescales. Since microchip physics will deliver only a few physical timescales, collective computational phenomena will have to be explored in order to realize the long-range memory timescales required by many tasks. Since at this point, numerous but hardly explored options are "in the air" for computational timescale management, this position offers much freedom to engage in original work.

The *second position* is funded through university budgets and is independent of specific project demands. The position holder will enjoy unusual freedom, paired with intellectual risk, to contribute to the ultimate scientific goal of Jaeger’s group: a unifying formal theory of information processing in nonlinear dynamical systems - regardless of whether they are similar to biological brains, or rest on non-neural dynamical phenomena in novel material substrates. Obviously, such a unifying theory, which would play for neuromorphic computing a similarly central role as Turing computability theory plays for digital computing, is not in sight and may be even not possible. However, many mini-revolutions in mathematical denoscription formats are possible, and needed.

Each position will be filled by either a PhD student with a 4-year contract, or by a Postdoc with a 3-year contract. The only selection criterion is qualification (product of intellectual audacity, analytical thinking power, and relevant mathematical and factual knowledge).

These two positions are a perfect intellectual challenge for adventurous mathematicians, theoretical physicists / biologists, theoretical computer scientists or analytically minded machine learners with a background in dynamical systems, dynamics on networks, information theory, or formal logic.

Fully funded PhD position in Marine Robotics and SLAM for AUVs operating under the Arctic/Antarctic sea-ice

Rationale:
Despite the considerable effort directed towards AUV navigation, a self-contained solution remains a key challenge. Due to the cumulative error that inertial navigation experiences with time, AUVs typically require an external navigation support or regular surfacing to obtain GPS fixes and limit the error [1], which options can be undesirable/unavailable in certain applications (e.g. deep-water and/or under-ice deployments). In response to the presently limited navigation capability, this project will focus on the development of robust navigation techniques for high-powered AUVs that relying on on-board sensors and efficient algorithms will enable navigation in GPS-denied environments. SLAM is a powerful technique where a robot builds the map of the surrounding environment and concurrently localises itself within that map. Although SLAM has been proven to be effective for mobile robots operating in structured environments, the application of these techniques in the highly unstructured underwater domain is immature with outstanding challenges to be addressed. The candidate will be required to develop robust and computationally feasible in real-time sonar-based SLAM algorithms. Upon the successful demonstration of the effectiveness of the algorithms in computer simulations (with respect to the environmental suitability), the candidate will have the opportunity to test the algorithm in real-time via field experiments.

6PhD and 5 Postdoc positions Science of Intelligence Berlin (EXC)

Cross-disciplinary research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, cognitive science, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy.

Starting dates: Summer / Fall 2020

Duration: 3 years

Salary level: TV-L 13, 100%

Application deadline: 29.11.2019 23:59 CET

What are the principles of intelligence, shared by all forms of intelligence, no matter whether artificial or biological, whether robot, computer program, human, or animal? And how can we apply these principles to create intelligent technology? Answering these questions - in an ethically responsible way - is the central scientific objective of the new Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence.

Researchers from a multitude of analytic and synthetic disciplines - artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, cognitive science, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy - join forces to create a multi-disciplinary research program across universities and research institutes in Berlin.

Our approach is driven by the insight, that any method, concept, and theory must demonstrate its merits by contributing to the intelligent behavior of a synthetic artifact, such as a robot or a computer program. These artifacts represent the shared “language” across disciplines, enabling the validation, combination, transfer, and extension of research results. Thus we expect to attain cohesion among disciplines, which currently produce their own theories and empirical findings about aspects of intelligence.

Interdisciplinary research projects have been defined which combine analytic and synthetic research and which address key aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence.

In addition, the Science of Intelligence graduate program promotes the cross-disciplinary education of young scientists on a Master, PhD, and postdoctoral level. All PhD students associated with the cluster are expected to join the Science of Intelligence doctoral program.

Senior Research Associate in High-Dimensional Longitudinal Methods, Lancaster

We are recruiting a research associate to join a 3-year Wellcome Trust-funded project for developing statistical and machine learning methods for high-dimensional longitudinal data. Applications close on 24th November. Please see below for more details, and apply here:

https://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?id=5578

With the advent of high-throughput genomics, proteomics and metabolomics, it has become common practice to collect and process longitudinal biological samples to follow the evolution of a disease or condition using molecular markers. These molecular markers are usually high-dimensional in nature, requiring sophisticated statistical processing. While our ability to measure high-dimensional markers has been steadily increasing, the ability to analyse these data effectively has not kept pace.

The research will bridge the gap between traditional longitudinal population studies and the high-dimensional world of molecular measurements, by developing new approaches for study design, modelling and inference that fully exploit both the cross-sectional (between dimensions) and longitudinal (between times) dependence structures of the data collected in these studies. You will work under the direct supervision of Dr Frank Dondelinger, a machine learning expert with extensive experience working on biomolecular datasets. The project team further includes leading statistical experts in longitudinal statistics (Professor Peter Diggle, Lancaster University), Gaussian processes (Dr Mauricio Alvarez, University of Sheffield) and Bayesian experimental design (Professor David Woods, University of Southampton). You will develop cutting-edge statistical and machine learning methods for dealing with high-dimensional longitudinal data. These methods will then be applied to molecular data from two large-scale population studies: metabolomic measurements from the Pregnancy Outcome Prediction Study (POPS) and DNA methylation measurements from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

You will be a motivated researcher with experience in developing statistical or machine learning methods and a keen interest in applying your skill set in the biomedical field to improve human health and our understanding of biological longitudinal processes.

The Centre for Health Informatics, Computation and Statistics is a vibrant and diverse research group within the Lancaster Medical School, comprising researchers into spatial and longitudinal statistics, machine learning, statistical genomics and epidemiology. The group has close ties to the School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Lancaster Data Science Institute, both of which have a reputation for excellence in statistical and computational research.

Lancaster University subscribes to the Researcher Development Concordat, and you will be fully supported in your professional and personal development. Lancaster University is committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Faculty of Health and Medicine holds a Silver Athena SWAN award. The Lancaster University Pre-School Centre is rated an Outstanding Provider by Ofsted and staff get preferential access to childcare places.

Informal inquiries about can be made to Dr Frank Dondelinger: f.dondelinger@lancaster.ac.uk
