PhD and Post-Doc positions on Artificial Intelligence for Personal
Dear All,
we are looking for candidates for PhD and PostDoc positions at the SmartData Center of Politecnico di Torino (Italy) in the context of the H2020 PIMCity European project.
PIMCity European Project:
The Web economy has been revolutionized by unprecedented possibility of collecting massive amounts of user personal data, which lead the web to become the largest data market and created the biggest companies in our history. Unfortunately, this change has deep consequences for users, who, deprived of any negotiation power, are compelled to blindly provide their data for free access to services, and creating a privacy nightmare.
Personal Information Management Systems (PIMS) aim to give users back control over their data, while creating transparency in the market. However, so far, they have failed to reach business maturity and sizable user bases. The PIMCity European Project will offer tools to change this scenario. The project aims at designing and deploying novel mechanisms to increase users’ privacy, studying privacy preserving analytics and automatic methodologies to compute privacy-related metrics.
Job Location:
SmartData center at Politecnico di Torino, Italy - smartdata.polito.it
Research Denoscription:
The candidate will conduct high-quality research activities within the SmartData@Polito center, led by Prof. Marco Mellia, to research on topics including but not limited to:
Web Privacy Data analytics, to quantify and automatically detect privacy violations and threats on the internet. The candidate will exploit active and passive measurements to fed automatic algorithms to detect, quantify and highlight privacy threats in the internet. Big data, automatic crawling, machine learning are fundamentals building block to detect which private information systems are collecting, how they store and manage the data, if they share data with third parties, etc.
Personal privacy preserving analytics, as means to impose control on personal data. The candidate will use concepts like Zero Knowledge, Differential Privacy, K-Anonymity to achieve the goal to design and engineer solutions that allow one to share their data, while keeping control on it.
Automatic collection and computation of easy to understand novel privacy metrics. The candidate will have to design easy to understand metrics that allows anyone to understand the privacy threat when accessing an online service - a fundamental information for a user to know to take informed decisions.
How to apply:
Interested candidates can contact the Prof. Marco Mellia at mellia@polito.it
POST DOC POSITION:
Requirements:
PhD in Computer Science or equivalent disciplines.
Strong publication record in top academic conferences and/or journals.

Fulltime PhD Scholarship: New Methods and Perspectives on African Migration - DEADLINE 30 November
Research topic
Migration patterns vary substantially across regions and countries, and flows have changed considerably over time. Africa has a long history of internal and international migration, with migrants moving within and beyond the continent. In 2015, the UNDESA estimated(1) that 14 percent of international migrants1 in the world originated from the continent. According to the JRC report(2) the number of people in Africa moving from their home country is set to increase in line with population growth over the coming decades. The majority of the people on the move remain on the African continent, with about 40% of them coming to Europe. As an important force of development in both sending and destination regions, migration forms a top-priority issue in the global policy debate. The main objective of this study is to incorporate the remote sensing perspective to analyse the migration patterns within and from Africa, the drivers behind them (such as environmental factors, epidemic dynamics, etc. in addition to socio-economic aspects). The project also aims to provide a deeper understanding of the potential effects of policy decisions on migratory flows, and project potential scenarios for the future.

Postdoctoral position and Two PhD positions in neuroscience, biochemistry and molecular pharmacology of the endocannabinoid system
JOB DESCRIPTION
The group of Professor Jürg Gertsch (www.gertschgroup.com) at the University of Bern, Switzerland (www.unibe.ch), Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (www.ibmm.unibe.ch/) investigates the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) for neuropsychiatric and inflammatory conditions with a strong interest in drug discovery. We have collaborations with other research groups worldwide. Currently there are several openings. The positions are available immediately for the duration of 3-4 years:
Postdoctoral position
in neuroscience and biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher with a successful PhD degree and outstanding references in the area of molecular biology, biochemistry and animal experimentation. Using a novel conditional knock-in, the postdoctoral researcher will investigate the role of peptide endocannabinoids (pepcans) for the first time in vivo. The focus of the project is the sympathoadrenal axis and how the CNS communicates to the peripheral endocannabinoid system. Our lab uses chemical biology, LC-MS/MS analytics, molecular biology and biochemical methods and behavioral mouse models. The ambitious candidate with a genuine interest in basic research and transgenic mouse models will lead the project together with one PhD student and be part of a bigger team working on the ECS. Fluent spoken and written English are prerequisites. This position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNFS) who pays competitive salaries and puts strong emphasis on equal opportunities for career development.
Two PhD positions
in neuroscience, biochemistry and molecular pharmacology of the endocannabinoid system
We are looking for two highly motivated and talented young researchers with a good MSc degree or equivalent in the area of molecular biology, biochemistry or related. The successful candidate with a genuine interest in basic research will enter the GCB graduate school for a PhD degree in the area of specialization (neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology). Fluent spoken and written English are prerequisites. Although this position is open worldwide, candidates with strong academic education from Switzerland, EU and US are encouraged to apply.
Role of peptide endocannabinoids (pepcans) in the central and autonomous nervous system
This project is dedicated to understanding the origin and role of novel allosteric modulators of cannabinoid receptors. A strong background in molecular biology and interest in rodent models and mouse breeding is desirable. This project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2020-2014). In this project mouse (breeding of KO mice) is essential.
Endocannabinoid membrane transport
This highly competitive project is dedicated to the characterization of novel lipid membrane transport mechanisms. A strong background in molecular biology, protein chemistry and biochemistry and an interest in translational work (preclinical to clinical in collaboration with Synendos Therapeutics) is required. This project is funded by the NCCR TransCure.
How to apply: Please send your application, which should include a motivation letter, CV and references (letters / contact information of three references) by email to: Mrs. Barbara Järmann (Barbara.jaermann@ibmm.unibe.ch). Successful applicants will be invited to visit the lab and talk to Prof. Jürg Gertsch and the group members. Applications will be accepted until the vacancy is filled.
