Fulltime PhD Scholarship: New Methods and Perspectives on African Migration - DEADLINE 30 November

Research topic

Migration patterns vary substantially across regions and countries, and flows have changed considerably over time. Africa has a long history of internal and international migration, with migrants moving within and beyond the continent. In 2015, the UNDESA estimated(1) that 14 percent of international migrants1 in the world originated from the continent. According to the JRC report(2) the number of people in Africa moving from their home country is set to increase in line with population growth over the coming decades. The majority of the people on the move remain on the African continent, with about 40% of them coming to Europe. As an important force of development in both sending and destination regions, migration forms a top-priority issue in the global policy debate. The main objective of this study is to incorporate the remote sensing perspective to analyse the migration patterns within and from Africa, the drivers behind them (such as environmental factors, epidemic dynamics, etc. in addition to socio-economic aspects). The project also aims to provide a deeper understanding of the potential effects of policy decisions on migratory flows, and project potential scenarios for the future.

Master-thesis (M.Sc.) in analysis and visualization of gene dependencies.
Gene Editing Group Frankfurt am Main

Activities and responsibilities
Activities and responsibilities - Based on a recently published technology (https://elifesciences.org/articles/42549), we utilize single and multiplexed CRISPR/Cas gene editing libraries to investigate genetic interactions in the context of genome stability and tumorigenesis. Analyzing the Next Generation Sequencing data sets resulting from multiplexed high-throughput cellular screens requires novel computational approaches. We seek an ambitious and highly, highly motivated new team member who will support us in developing statistical models and computational tools and algorithms to systematically analyze and visualize functional relationships of genetic interactions.
Qualification profile
Qualification profile - The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in bioinformatics, biostatistics, informatics, applied mathematics or a similar area and has very good programming skills in Python, R, Java, or similar languages. A high interest in academic research, high-level analytical thinking, and team-oriented personality with good communication skills are mandatory. Prior experience with NGS data and biological network analyses is preferred but not required.
We offer
We offer - A versatile workplace in a university research institute consisting of 11 working groups, spread across 3 locations of the Goethe University with state-of-the-art computational, genomics and proteomics know-how and equipment.
The university advocates equal rights for women and men and therefore urges women to apply. Handicapped candidates are given preferential treatment with equal personal and professional qualifications.

Ph.D. Position in "Molecular Organic Materials"
Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen

The understanding of structure-property relations is the key to create function on the molecular level. in our research group we combine concepts and tools of physical organic chemistry to address this challenge. We place the results of our fundamental research in the context of energy-related questions, such as organic flow batteries, molecular solar thermal storage systems (MOST), metal-free hydrogen storage, or novel electronic organic materials.
Activities and responsibilities
At the Institute of Organic Chemistry (AG Prof. Dr. Hermann A. Wegner), Justus Liebig University, we are looking for a PhD candidate for the project "Application of flow chemistry for the synthesis of polycyclic hydrocarbons" starting at 01.02.2020. This divers project combines synthetic chemistry with aspects of engineering in the highly topical field of flow chemistry. The synthesized compounds will be relevant in the area of material science.
Qualification profile
Applicants should have an excellent Master degree in Chemistry and practical experience in organic synthesis.
We offer
We offer a highly motivating working atmosphere in a new chemistry building.
Send application to
Please send your application with the usual documents until 31.12.2019 to Prof. Dr. Hermann A. Wegner, Institute of Organic Chemistry, Heinrich-Buff-Ring 17, 35392 Giessen.
