14 Instances in Which it is Disliked to Give the Salaam – By Shaikh Al-Fawzaan
By Aboo Haatim M. Farooq

Shaikh Saalih bin Fawzaan Al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) said during his explanation of the text of Mandhoomah Al-Adaab:
“These are the instances in which giving the salaam is disliked:
The 1⃣ instance: it is disliked to give salaam to the one who is speaking, since he is busy in conversation with other than himself.
The 2⃣ instance: ‘with regards to the one who is busy with dhikr (remembrance of Allaah)’ – by way of tasbeeh (saying: subhaanallaah) and tahleel (saying: laa ilaaha illallaah) and in the recital of the Qur’aan.
The 3⃣ instance: with regards to the one who is pre-occupied with the hadeeth from the sayings of Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).
The 4⃣ instance: giving salaam to the khateeb except during the Friday sermon; since it is forbidden to speak during the Friday sermon; and so giving salaam to the khateeb & to those in attendance is impermissible.
The 5⃣ instance: ‘the one delivering a lecture’ – the one who is delivering a lesson relating to the Qur’aan or relating to hadeeth or Fiqh or in grammar – do not give salaam to him. Some people; when they come to a gathering and the lesson is in progress; he will give the salaam and raise his voice, this is disliked because this distracts the teacher just as it distracts those who are sat listening and so they turn their attention to him.
The 6⃣ instance: ‘those who are researching in the sciences’ – whoever is researching an issue from the issues of knowledge then do not extend the salaam towards him and thus disrupt his research; this is not legislated.
The 7⃣ instance: ‘one who is delivering an admonition’ – whoever is admonishing the people; then do not give the salaam if you approach, rather sit and listen to the admonition. Do not extend the salaam; because you will distract the admonisher as well as distract those that are listening.
The 8⃣ instance: the one who is reiterating/revising in (an issue of) Fiqh; and he is the one who is revising/studying Fiqh.
The 9⃣ instance: the muadhin; if he is giving the adhaan then do not extend the salaam towards him whilst he is giving the adhaan; since you will interrupt him from the adhaan.
The 🔟 instance: ‘the one who is praying’ – if you arrive and someone is praying; do not extend the salaam towards him until he has concluded his prayer. It has been reported that one of the companions gave the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) the salaam whilst he was in prayer and so he responded to him with an ishaarah (indication).[1] Therefore is someone gives you salaam whilst you are praying then you should respond to him with an ishaarah.
The 1⃣1⃣ instance: ‘the one who is observing purification’ – the one who is performing the wudhu then do not extend the salaam towards him until he has concluded his wudhu. As for the one who is bathing for other than the purpose of worship; in order to keep cool or to clean himself then there is nothing preventing you from giving him salaam.
The 1⃣2⃣ instance: likewise it is not legislated to give the salaam to the one who is preoccupied with eating.
The 1⃣3⃣ instance: ‘to the one who is defecating’ – this is more severe; and he is the one who is urinating or defecating – do not give him salaam whilst he is relieving himself. Since it is disliked for the one who is defecating or urinating that he should speak in this situation; so do not give him salaam.
The 1⃣4⃣ instance: ‘the one who is fighting the enemy in a war’ – the last type is the Mujaahid who is in the instance of fighting; you should not extend salaam to the one who is fighting because he is busied from you in fighting the enemies of Allaah.”

🔹Narrated that Abu Hurayrah said:
“The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: ‘When Friday comes, at each door of the mosque there are angels who write down the first ones to come to the mosque. Then when the imaam sits down they close their books and come to listen to the sermon. The one who comes early (for Friday prayer) is like who sacrificed a camel, then those who come after him (in order of their coming) are like one who sacrificed a cow, then one who sacrificed a horned ram, then one who sacrificed a chicken, then like one who offered an egg.”

📍Whenever Utman Ibnu Affãn - Allah be pleased with him - stood before a grave he would cry until he would wet his beard...
❗So it was said to him: You cry not when mentioning Paradise and Hell, and cry of this ❓❗
He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying:
"The Grave is the first Station of the stations of the Hereafter, so if one is saved from it, then what is after it is easier, and if one isn't saved from it, then what is after it is harder"
And I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: "No sight have I ever seen, except that the grave is more hideous"

Saying “Knock on Wood “
By Abdul Azeez bin Baz 1420H (may Allah have mercy on him)
“The Verdict on knocking on wood for protection against envy.”
A brother named ‘Amr from Damascus wrote a letter asking about knocking on wood. He wrote,” When mentioning a blessing or favor Allah has bestowed on a brother or a friend some people knock on wood out of fear from the envious. And sometimes they request other people to do it by saying, “Knock on Wood”. What is the verdict on this action? May Allah reward you abundantly.”
As-Shaykh Bin Baz (may Allah rest him in Jannah) responded saying, “ This act is forbidden and contains corrupt belief. It is impermissible to knock on wood for protection against the envious. The act legislated in Islam for the person who obtained Allah’s favor or a smooth progress is thanking and praising Allah. Additionally, the person must ask Allah for all His blessings and His help in being thankful. This deed is found in the verses;
And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.”[ Ibrahim 7]
فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.[ Baqarah 152]

“By Allah we cannot rest! By Allah at times we cannot sleep due to grief over our youth and fear of them losing their religion! By Allah the complete cure is right in front of us! Why have we abandoned it? Why have the youth divided? We should search for what has caused the severing of our body (unity) and then mend it with the book of Allah n the Sunnah! So where are the reformers? Those who will gather the bricks and scattered parts and unite them like new, and make them one body!” - Shaykh Rabī ibn Hādi al-Madkhalī [Al Lubaab Min Mejmo' Nasaeeh pg 341-342]

AKHLAAQ [MORAL CHARACTER, BEHAVIOUR, TRAITS ETC] HAVE LIMITS – BY IMAAM IBNUL QAYYIM رحمه الله
Akhlaaq [i.e. mannerisms, moral character, behaviour or traits, which are part of a person’s natural disposition or nurtured in him (or her)] have limits. Transgression occurs when one goes beyond its limits and deficiency and humiliation occurs when one falls short.
The limits of Anger are: Praiseworthy bravery and having a dislike for despicable and deficient [behaviour, moral character etc.]. This is its perfection. But when one goes beyond its limits, he transgresses and oppresses; and if his anger is deficient, he will behave in a cowardly manner and will not detest despicable [behaviour, moral character etc.].
The limits of Envy are: [Praiseworthy] competition in seeking after perfection and not wanting the other competitor to excel you; [but] if a person goes beyond its limits, it leads to jealous animosity and oppression through which a person wishes that the one he envies should be deprived of blessings and is eager to harm him. And if a person lacks [what is required of it], it leads to disesteem and a weakness in one’s ambition.
The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said:
‘’There should be no envy except in two [people]: a person whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a person whom Allah has given wisdom [i.e. religious knowledge] and he judges by way of it and teaches it to the others.”
This type of envy [necessitates praiseworthy] competition between one another and the Haasid [i.e. the one who is envious of his or her competitor] seeks -by way of it- to be similar to the one he [or she] envies, whilst not [harbouring that] despised envy which [necessitates that he or she] wishes that the blessings bestowed upon the envied one should cease to exist.
The limits of Desires are: A [source] of relaxation for the heart and intellect after exerting oneself in carrying out acts of obedience and seeking to accomplish virtuous deeds. However, when a person goes beyond its limits, it leads to a strong and barely uncontrollable emotion and lewdness, and thus the person descends to the level of animals. However, when a person is lacking in desire and does not [utilised it as a means] of seeking after perfection and virtue, it leads to weakness, impotence and humiliation.
And among the most noble and beneficial sciences is the knowledge regarding the hudood [the appropriate limits], especially the divine limits-the commands and prohibitions [ordained by Allaah (The Most High) and His Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)]. The most knowledgeable people are those who have the most knowledge regarding those divine limits, hence they neither include- in those limits- that which is not from them nor remove that which is included in them. Allaah [The Most High] said:
ٱلۡأَعۡرَابُ أَشَدُّ ڪُفۡرً۬ا وَنِفَاقً۬ا وَأَجۡدَرُ أَلَّا يَعۡلَمُواْ حُدُودَ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ
The bedouins are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely to be in ignorance of the limits (Allah’s Commandments and His Legal Laws, etc.) which Allah has revealed to His Messenger. [Soorah At-Tawbah’ Aayah 97]
Therefore, the most just, balanced and upright people are those who stay within the limits of the Akhlaaq, actions and the deeds legislated in the Islamic legislation- in knowledge and practice.

Yahyā bin Mu’āth ar-Rāzī (رحمه الله) said:
“The scholars are more merciful to the nation of Muhammad (ﷺ) than their own fathers and mothers.”
It was said to him:
“How is that?”
He said:
“Because their fathers and mothers protect them from the fire of this world whereas the scholars protect them from the Fire of the Hereafter.”
[Mukhtasar Nasīhah Ahl al-Hadīth (no. 167) via Lam ad-Durar al-Manthoor of Jamāl al-Hārithī (p. 68)]
