A Story of a Woman who had Taqwa : Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Allah’s statement; (Allah will grant after hardship, ease.)

This is a sure promise from Him, and indeed, Allah’s promises are true and He never breaks them, This is an Allah’s saying; (Verily, along with every hardship is relief. Verily, along with every hardship is relief.) [94:5-6]

There is a relevant Hadith that we should mention here. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said,

“A man and his wife from an earlier generation were poor. Once when the man came back from a journey, he went to his wife saying to her, while feeling hunger and fatigued, Do you have anything to eat’ She said, Yes, receive the good news of Allah’s provisions.’ He again said to her, If you have anything to eat, bring it to me.’ She said, Wait a little longer.’ She was awaiting Allah’s mercy. When the matter was prolonged, he said to her, Get up and bring me whatever you have to eat, because I am real hungry and fatigued.’ She said, I will. Soon I will open the oven’s cover, so do not be hasty.’ When he was busy and refrained from insisting for a while, she said to herself, `I should look in my oven.’ So she got up and looked in her oven and found it full of the meat of a lamb, and her mortar and pestle was full of seed grains; it was crushing the seeds on its own. So, she took out what was in the mortar and pestle, after shaking it to remove everything from inside, and also took the meat out that she found in the oven.”

Abu Hurayrah added, “By He in Whose Hand is the life of Abu Al-Qasim (Prophet Muhammad )! This is the same statement that Muhammad said, (Had she taken out what was in her mortar and not emptied it fully by shaking it, it would have continued crushing the seeds until the Day of Resurrection.)”

LAWFUL AND UNLAWFUL TAWASSUL

Q: What is the ruling on making Tawassul (supplicating to Allah in the name of …/by virtue of…) by the Prophet?
Is there any evidence prohibiting this?

A: Making Tawassul by the Prophet (peace be upon him) needs detailing.

☑️ If this Tawassul takes the form of following and loving him, obeying his orders, refraining from his prohibitions, and being sincere to Allah in worship, this is Islam and the Religion with which Allah sent His Prophets. In fact, every Mukallaf (person meeting the conditions to be held legally accountable for their actions) is obligated to perform these duties, which are the means to attain happiness in the world and the Hereafter.

🚫 As for making Tawassul by supplicating to the Prophet, seeking his help, asking for his support against enemies, and entreating him to cure the sick, these are kinds of major Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship), which embody the religion of Abu Jahl and other idol worshippers. The same applies to making Tawassul by other prophets, Awliya' (pious people), Jinn (creatures created from fire), angels, trees, stones, or idols.

🚫 There is a third kind of Tawassul, which is Tawassul through the virtue of the status, right, or self of the Prophet (peace be upon him), such as by saying: "O Allah! I ask You in the name of Your Prophet, by virtue of the status of Your Prophet, by right of Your Prophet, by virtue of the status or right of prophets or Awliya'", and other similar supplications. This is a Bid‘ah (innovation in the religion) and a means leading to Shirk. Accordingly, it is not permissible to use this kind of Tawassul neither with the Prophet (peace be upon him) nor with any other person, because Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) has not prescribed this.

Moreover, acts of worship are Tawqifiy (bound by a religious text and not amenable to personal opinion), and thus it is not permissible to consider as lawful what is not supported by a proof from the Purified Shar‘ (Law) of Allah.

As for the incident of the blind man who made Tawassul by the Prophet (peace be upon him) during his lifetime, he entreated the Prophet (peace be upon him) to supplicate and intercede to Allah for him to return his eyesight to him; he did not make Tawassul by the Prophet’s self, status, or right, as indicated from the wording of the Hadith and clarified by the scholars who explained it.
This issue was discussed in detail by Shaykh-ul-Islam Abu Al-`Abbas Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah be merciful to him) in his many useful books, such as "Al-Qa‘idah Al-Jalilah fil Tawassul wal Wasilah," which is a useful book worth reading.

According to Ijma‘ (consensus of scholars), the same ruling of permissibility applies to living persons other than the Prophet (peace be upon him). For example, it is permissible to say to your brother, father, or any righteous person, "Supplicate to Allah to cure me of my illness, to restore my eyesight, to provide me with righteous offspring, etc."
Allah is the One Who grants success.

When to say and when NOT to say Takbir after the Five Daily Prayers
The Individual Who Teaches The People Without Having Taken Knowledge From Scholars | Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān

The Questioner: Noble Shaykh, may Allāh grant you success, a man teaches the people the sciences of Islāmic legislation and the creed of the pious predecessors in spite of the fact that he has not taken knowledge [directly] from Mashayikh and scholars. Should knowledge be sought from him?

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān: “So long as he is someone who is hasn’t established a sound foundation with the scholars, then he is a student of pages and books; so no. Knowledge shouldn’t be taken from him because one doesn’t know the methodology of the pious predecessors; one doesn’t understand except by studying with the scholars and taking directly from them. This knowledge is conveyed through direct transmission and not merely through reading. Direct transmission; reading is merely helpful but it is not to be relied upon. A person like this is referred to as feigning knowledge so knowledge is not to be sought from him.”

*Whether The One Who Has Not Studied With Scholars Should Teach The Laymen | Shaykh Muḥammad Bāzmūl*

The Questioner: “May Allāh reward you with good. This questioner from Tunisia asks: ‘Is it appropriate that the student of knowledge who has not sought knowledge with the scholars teach the common people? And is there a specific rule regarding this? And should this be considered from putting one’s self forward?’.”

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar Bāzmūl: “Yes, this is considered putting one’s self forward and it is not appropriate for the person for whom the scholars have not recognized as being able to teach the people that he put himself forward to teach them.

And I fear that if I said that he is surely permitted to teach the general people the fundamentals of the religion from what he has learned that this would become a door to evil; that it might cause him to become amazed with himself and start giving religious verdicts and [that] he might begin to speak about affairs of the religion despite not yet being qualified to do so.

What is most befitting for any student of knowledge is that he does not put himself forward to teach the people until he is recognized for such.

Just as it is most befitting for the people, the general Muslims from among them as well as the students of knowledge; that they do not take knowledge from just anyone until he is recognized for such.

It has come in the narration transmitted upon the authority of Ibn Sīrīn and others that he said: ‘Certainly, this knowledge is religion. So, carefully consider from whom you take your religion from.’.”

Hadith on Repentance: If you did not sin, Allah would replace you with people who would sin and He would forgive them

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you did not sin Allah would replace you with people who would sin and they would seek the forgiveness of Allah and He would forgive them.”
