The Companions and those who followed them upon righteousness did not use to praise themselves.
Therefore, a Walee (righteous person) should not praise himself, saying: “I am one of the Awliyaa’”, or “I am a Walee”, or “I have such-and-such status”. He should not praise himself.
Rather, he should see himself as someone falling short (in fulfilling his duties).
Allaah تعالى says in Surah al-Mu’minoon while describing the characteristics of the Believers of this Ummah, He تعالى says:
وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوا وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ
{And they who give what they give (in charity) while their hearts are full of fear, because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning).}
[Surah al-Mu’minoon (23): 60]

[Surah al-Baqarah (2): 127]
The scholars (the exegesis) have said in their books of Tafseer, he عليه السلام used to say this Du`aa with each stone. With each stone that he used to place during construction, he used to ask Allaah to accept it from him.
Ibn Katheer رحمه الله reported in his Tafseer, in the explanation of this Aayaah, the statement of Wuhaib Ibn al-Ward.
Wuhaib Ibn al-Ward was one of the pious predecessors, when he read this Aayaah, he began to weep. He said: “The Khaleel of al-Rahmaan, building the House of al-Rahmaan, at the instructions of al-Rahmaan, and he (Ibraaheem) still feared that it will not be accepted from him!”

[Surah al-Mu’minoon (23): 60]
Umm al-Mu’mineen,
Aaishah رضي الله عنها - as reported in al-Musnad (of Imaam Ahmad) and others - asked the Prophet ﷺ about the meaning of this Aayah. She said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Is he the person who commits fornication, steals, murders, while he also fears the punishment?" He ﷺ said: “No, O daughter of al-Siddeeq. Rather, he is a person who performs the Salaah, Fasts, and gives charity while he fears that (His Lord) will not accept it (from him).”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3175), Sunan Ibn Maajah (4198), Musnad Ahmad (25263, 25705) and graded as “Saheeh li ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. See al-Saheehah (162)]
And there are numerous Aathaar (narrations) from the Companions in this regards which point to this noble characteristic.
Abdullaah Ibn Abee Mulaikah said: “I met more than thirty Companions (of the Prophet ﷺ) and each one of them was afraid of becoming a hypocrite.”[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, vol. 1, Book 2, chapter 36]
Abdullaah Ibn Umar said: “If I come to know that (Allaah تعالى) has accepted from me even one Sajdah that is better for me (and more beloved) than the Dunya and what is in it.”[al-Tamheed of Ibn
Abd al-Barr (4/256)]
They did not use to ascribe purity for themselves.
Al-Hasan al-Basree used to say: “A believer combines between doing good deeds and fear [that his good deeds might not be accepted], whereas a hypocrite combines between evil deeds and hope [that he will be forgiven even if he did not repent].”
[Tafseer al-Tabaree (17/68)]
A believer does good deeds and at the same time fears; fears that his good deeds will not be accepted, that it will be rejected. And this is why he strives in doing more good deeds, and acts of obedience, and the acts which will bring him closer to Allaah.
But he does not ascribe purity for himself. Rather, he only hopes that Allaah سبحانه وتعالى will accept his deeds.
Look at this remarkable example in this regards, in the story of Khaleel al-Rahmaan (Ibraaheem عليه السلام), while he is building the House (Kabah) of al-Rahmaan, at the instructions of al-Rahmaan سبحانه وتعالى.Allaah تعالى says:
{And (remember) when Ibraaheem and (his son) Ismaa
eel were raising the foundations of the House (the Kabah at Makkah), (saying): “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”}[Surah al-Baqarah (2): 127]

🔘 How to identify what your state will be like in the grave?
🎓 Ibn al-Qayyim said:
❝The state of a person in the grave will be like the state of the heart in the chest; in bliss or facing punishment, imprisoned or roaming freely. If you want to know what your state in the grave will be like, then look at the state of your heart in your chest.
💠 If the your heart is filled with joy and tranquility, and is pure (clean from pride, envy and other evils) - then by the Will of Allaah, the same will be your state in the grave. And it's opposite is also true.
💠 This is why you find that a person - who is obedient (to Allaah), and has good manners (with the creation), and who is forgiving (and kind) - to be the most tranquil (and at rest).
💠 Faith takes away distress, removes the grief, and it (Faith) is the coolness of the eyes of the one upon Tawheed (monotheism), and (the means of) comfort for the worshipers.
➡️ Whoever is preoccupied with Tasbeeh (saying: Sub-haan Allaah), his private affairs will be taken care of.
➡️ And whoever is preoccupied with al-Hamd (saying: alhamdulillaah), he will be given bounties one after the other.
➡️ And whoever is preoccupied with al-Istighfaar, the locked (doors) will be opened for him.❞
