The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Janak Dhakal in the area of Food microbiology and Food Safety, and Antimicrobial Resistance. The selected candidate will be working in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory and will be responsible for:
Developing research protocols
Conducting field trips (for sample collection and procurement)
Performing laboratory microbiological analysis (conventional and molecular)
Performing data analysis using statistical software such as SAS
Preparing scientific manunoscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
Preparing posters and oral presentations for scientific conferences Assisting in other research projects and departmental activities
Qualifications:
- M. S. in Food Science, Poultry Science, Animal Science, microbiology, or a closely related field
- Enthusiasm for conducting research on field as well as in the lab
- Prior food microbiology research experience preferred
- Previous working experience in a BSL 2 facility is preferred but not mandatory
- Strong oral and written communication skills
Timeline:

A PhD position funded up to 4 years will be available from June 2024 at the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies, University of Zurich, Switzerland (https://www.ieu.uzh.ch/en/research/behaviour/cognition.html), to work on 'The meaning of animal signals' with focus on meerkats (Suricata suricatta)', under the supervision of Prof. Marta Manser. You will conduct research on how meaning is generated and understood without language, within a larger collaboration of primate and human researchers. Our goal is to compare non-primate (meerkat) and primate (sooty mangabey) vocal signals with non-linguistic sounds humans produce before and after the onset of language. The focus of this position will be on meerkats with data collection at our habituated field population at the Kalahari Meerkat Project in South Africa (http://www.kalahari-

The position is funded by the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Evolving Language www.evolvinglanguage.ch, a Swiss consortium with the ambitious goal of creating a new discipline, Evolutionary Language Science, that targets the past and future of language. The consortium consists of leading scientists from traditionally separated academic domains, which allows us to harvest the diverse expertise from the humanities, social sciences, computational sciences, natural sciences and medicine towards a broadscale interdisciplinary collaboration.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- hold a Master degree in Animal Behaviour or a relevant discipline
- demonstrate strong interest in animal cognition/vocal communication
- design and implement observational data collection and field experiments
possess solid background in statistics and data processing
- be committed for up to 24 months of fieldwork
- be fluent in English (oral and written)
- carry out (some administrative and teaching assistance

The newly formed group builds on his prior academic work in the area of digital health and is a continuation of Dr. Jafari’s laboratory at Texas A&M. The post-doctoral scholars will collaborate on projects that involve creating novel sensors, systems and AI algorithms for digital health and digital twin paradigms. The post-doctoral fellows will also engage in development of domain specific/scientific/physics-informed machine learning algorithms. This position is on-site only in Cambridge, MA.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate closely with team members while also conducting independent research in the area of digital health.
Develop innovative and robust machine learning algorithms.
Analyze experimental data and develop computational models for digital health applications.
Lead the preparation of manunoscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Present research findings at conferences and scientific forums.
Provide support in grant/proposal writing as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
Strong foundation in design and development of algorithms and artificial intelligence/machine learning paradigms.
Strong programming skills (e.g., in Python).
Familiarity with biomedical circuits and systems and prior experience with novel wearable sensors are desired but not required.
Prior experience with computational physiology is desired but not required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
Proven track record of scientific productivity evidenced by publications in top-tier journals and conferences.
US citizenship is not required.
