In 1936, workers near Baghdad, while excavating the ruins of the 2,000-year-old village of Qujut Rabu, discovered a strange artifact.

By hollowing out or burning out the interior of the stump and making a roof, the settlers obtained reliable temporary housing in which they could even spend the winter. The McAllister family was one of the first to occupy a stump house in 1847, and since then they have been much more common.
