The lunar soil fragment brought by the Apollo 11 astronauts and presented to the Dutch prime minister turned out to be a piece of fossilized wood. The scandal was officially reported by BBC News in 2009.
"Experts doubted the authenticity of the stone back in 2006, and the suspicion was confirmed by analysis. The U.S. government has not yet commented on the situation."
It is a bit embarrassing when in 50 years science has easily learned how to determine the composition of a substance and your moonstone turns out to be a common fake. At least the progress in technology is encouraging!
