The Means To Connecting The Heart To Allaah
By Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan hafidhahullaah
Question:
What are the means that aid in connecting and attaching the heart to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic?
Answer:
The means that aid in connecting and attaching the heart to Allaah are: being plentiful in recitation of the Qur'aan, remembering the blessings and favours of Allaah, the One free from all imperfections, fearing the punishment of Allaah, hoping and desiring for His rewards and abundantly making remembrance of Allaah. Allaah, the Most High, mentions: "Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah - Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allaah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allaah do hearts find rest." [Surah ar-Ra'd: 28].
Likewise, from among the means that help in the heart becoming attached and connected to Allaah is to look at His Aayaat that are al-Kawniyyah (the creational - present in the creation), and to ponder and reflect over them. Allaah, the Most High, mentions: "Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding. Those who remember Allaah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire." [Surah Aal-imraan: 190 - 191].

The Seeker Of Leadership
By Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728h) rahimahullaah
The seeker of leadership - by corrupt means - is pleased with a statement which has exaltation and praise of him; even though it is false and futile. And he is displeased and angered by a statement that has censure and dispraise of him; even though it is truthful.
As for the believer, then he is pleased with truthful speech, whether that is for him or against him. And he is displeased and angered by a statement which is false and futile, whether that is for him or against him. Since Allaah loves the truth, as-Sidq (truthfulness) and al-'Adl (justice), whereas He hates lying and oppression.
So if what is stated is al-Haqq (the truth), as-Sidq (truthfulness and honesty) and justice then it is that which Allaah loves; and therefore, he (the believer) loves it, even though it may entail that which opposes his desires. That is because his Hawaa (desire) has turned to following what the Messenger (ﷺ) came with.
And if what is stated is lying and oppression, then Allaah hates that and (therefore) the believer also hates it, even if it is in accordance to his desires.

Speaking About Allaah Without Knowledge Is Equivalent To Shirk

Speaking About Allaah Without Knowledge Is Equivalent To Shirk
By Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan hafidhahullaah
Allaah, the Most High, mentions:
Say: "(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al-Fawahish (great evil sins, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allaah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allaah of which you have no knowledge." [Surah al-A'raaf: 33].
He, the One free from all imperfections, has made speaking about Him without any knowledge being above (i.e. worse than) Shirk. This is general with regards to speaking about Allaah without knowledge; meaning, that it is (speaking) without any evidence from the Book and the Sunnah in the foundations ('Usool) of the religion and its branches (Furoo'). And it is textually stipulated against speaking about Him without knowledge in making anything Halaal (lawful) and Haraam (forbidden); hence He, the Most High, mentions:
"And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: "This is lawful and this is forbidden," so as to invent lies against Allaah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allaah will never prosper." [Surah an-Nahl: 116].
So if Allaah has threatened those who make things lawful and forbidden without any evidence with painful punishment and lack of prosperity and success, then how about those who speak about Him without any knowledge regarding the acts of worship, and the place and time of these acts of worship for which Allaah has determined/ specified the set limits?
Moreover, as is well known worship is Tawqeefee (based upon texts from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah) with regards to its manner (i.e. how it is performed), its time and its place. So whosoever Shara' (legislates and institutes) in worship anything which Allaah has not given permission for then he enters under the statement of the Most High:
"Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not allowed. And had it not been for a decisive Word (gone forth already), the matter would have been judged between them. And verily, for the Dhaalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers), there is a painful torment." [Surah ash-Shoorah: 21].
So He, the One free from all imperfections, has made whoever Shara' (legislated) for the people something in the religion that which Allaah did not legislate as a partner for Him in His Tashree' (legislation). And whoever obeys him in that then he is a Mushrik (Polytheist) with Allaah, the Most High, with Shirk of obedience. And the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"Whoever introduces a newly invented matter in this religion of ours that which was not from it, then it will be rejected." That is because he (ﷺ) has clarified to the people what Allaah has legislated and ordained from the limits; in compliance with the limits that which Allaah determined for him. And Allaah, the Most High, mentions:
"And those are the set limits of Allaah. And whosoever transgresses the set limits of Allaah, then indeed he has wronged himself." [Surah at-Talaaq: 1].
"These are the limits ordained by Allaah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits ordained by Allaah, then such are the Dhaalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." [Surah al-Baqarah: 229].
"And whosoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will cast him into the Fire, to abide therein; and he shall have a disgraceful torment." [Surah an-Nisaa: 14].

The Ruling Of Hanging Qur'anic Amulets
By Shaykh
Question: What is the ruling of hanging an amulet containig the Qur'aan upon the wall or in the car?
Answer: [This is] not allowed; since hanging the Aayatul-Kursee or other than it from the Qur'aan upon the wall or in the car is belittlement of it.

Abandoning The Commands Of Allaah Causes Hatred
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah said:
"So whenever the people abandon some of that which Allaah has commanded them with, enmity and hatred will occur between them. And if the people Tafarraqa (split up and become disunited), they will be corrupted and destroyed. And if they are united, they will be upright and will dominate and conquer. For indeed the Jamaa'ah[1] is a mercy and al-Furqah (splitting and disunity) is punishment."

Raahawaih - rahimahullaah - (d. 238H) said: “If you were to ask the ignorant people about the Jamaa’ah (the 'Main Body’) they would say: 'The majority of people.' They do not know that the Jamaa’ah is the scholar who clings to the narrations from the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his way. So whoever is with him and follows him, then he is the Jamaa’ah.” [Aboo Nu’aym in Hilyatul-Awliyaa].

An Ocean Without A Shore
Shirk In al-Iraadaat and an-Niyyaat
By Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah)
As for ash-Shirk (associating partners with Allaah) in al-Iraadaat (will, wants, and desires) and an-Niyyaat (intentions); then that is an ocean without a shore and very few are saved from it. So whoever desires - by way of his action - other than the Face of Allaah, and he intends (to perform) something other than for drawing close to Allaah and seeking a reward from Him; then indeed he has fallen into Shirk in his intentions and will.
In addition, Ikhlaas (sincerity of worship) is that a person is sincere to Allaah in his actions, words, will and intentions. This is al-Haneefiyyah (the pure religion of Tawheed); the religion of Ibraaheem that Allaah commanded all of His servants to follow, and He will not accept anything else other than it from anyone, and it is the true reality of Islaam. As He, the Most High, mentions:
"And whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Surah Aal-Imraan: 85].
Moreover, it is the religion of Ibraaheem ('alayhis-Salaam) and whoever turns away from it is among the most foolish of the foolish people.

The Seeker Of Wealth
By Shaykhul-islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728H).
Similar to that (i.e. the seeker of leadership) is the seeker of wealth - even if it is by corrupt means - as Allaah, the Most High, mentions: "And from them are those who criticise you concerning (the distribution of) the alms, and if they are given anything from it they are pleased and if they are not given anything from it, behold! They are enraged." [Surah at-Tawbah: 58].
And they are the ones about whom he (ﷺ) said: "Wretched is the slave of Deenaar." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (no.2887)].
So how about if the heart is conquered and overcome by something that which is greater than the slavery to the Dirham and the Deenaar; from the Shahawaat (lusts), the Ahwaa (desires), and from the Mahboobaat (the dearly beloved things) that attract and entice the heart away from the completeness and perfection of love for Allaah and His worship?! And due to that which they (i.e. the different lusts and loves in the heart) have from competitive rivalry and the Shirk (associating partners with Allaah) through (worshipping) the created beings; it is how the heart is driven away and turned away from the perfection of its love for its Lord, its worship of Him and Khashyah (fear and awe) of Him. Since every Mahboob (beloved thing) attracts and entices the heart of the one that loves it towards it (i.e. the Mahboob), and it turns it (the heart) away from having love for that which is not its Mahboob (beloved). And similarly, that which is al-Makrooh (disliked and hated) entices, removes and preoccupies the heart from the worship of Allaah, the Most High.
Therefore, Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and others that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions: "Is it poverty that you fear? Indeed that which I fear for you is the Dunya (worldly life), such that were the heart of anyone among you to deviate then nothing will cause it to deviate except that (i.e. the Dunya)." [1] [Reported by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad (6/24), Sunan Ibn Maajah (no.5) and Shaykh al-Albaanee rahimahullaah declared it Hasan.
Similarly, those who love the servant such as his friends and those who hate him such as his enemies; then those who love him will draw him towards them. And if the love that they have for him is not for the sake of Allaah, then that is from those things which will cut him off from Allaah. And those who hate him will harm him and they will have enmity and hostility for him. So they will distract and preoccupy him away from Allaah through their harm. And if his friends who love him for other than the sake of Allaah were benevolent to him; then their benevolence to him obligates that he has love for them, and it draws his heart to them - and even if he was not upon uprightness (al-Istiqaamah) - and it obligates that he repays and reciprocates (that benevolence) to them. Hence, they will cut him off from Allaah and His worship.
So the trials and tribulations will not be removed from the heart until the whole of the religion of the servant is for the sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. And his love is for the sake of Allaah and whatever Allaah loves, and his hatred is for the sake of Allaah and whatever Allaah hates. And similar to that is his allegiance and enmity.
------------------------------
[1] On the authority of Aboo Dardaa, who said: "The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) came to us while we were talking about poverty and that we feared it. He said: ‘Is it poverty that you fear? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, the Dunya (worldly life) will descend upon you in abundance (i.e. its vast riches and comforts), such that nothing will cause the heart of a person among you to deviate except that. By Allaah, I have left you upon the likes of a clear path; its night and its day are the same (i.e. due to its clarity).’"
