The Seeker Of Wealth

By Shaykhul-islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728H).

Similar to that (i.e. the seeker of leadership) is the seeker of wealth - even if it is by corrupt means - as Allaah, the Most High, mentions: "And from them are those who criticise you concerning (the distribution of) the alms, and if they are given anything from it they are pleased and if they are not given anything from it, behold! They are enraged." [Surah at-Tawbah: 58].

And they are the ones about whom he (ﷺ) said: "Wretched is the slave of Deenaar." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (no.2887)].

So how about if the heart is conquered and overcome by something that which is greater than the slavery to the Dirham and the Deenaar; from the Shahawaat (lusts), the Ahwaa (desires), and from the Mahboobaat (the dearly beloved things) that attract and entice the heart away from the completeness and perfection of love for Allaah and His worship?! And due to that which they (i.e. the different lusts and loves in the heart) have from competitive rivalry and the Shirk (associating partners with Allaah) through (worshipping) the created beings; it is how the heart is driven away and turned away from the perfection of its love for its Lord, its worship of Him and Khashyah (fear and awe) of Him. Since every Mahboob (beloved thing) attracts and entices the heart of the one that loves it towards it (i.e. the Mahboob), and it turns it (the heart) away from having love for that which is not its Mahboob (beloved). And similarly, that which is al-Makrooh (disliked and hated) entices, removes and preoccupies the heart from the worship of Allaah, the Most High.

Therefore, Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and others that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions: "Is it poverty that you fear? Indeed that which I fear for you is the Dunya (worldly life), such that were the heart of anyone among you to deviate then nothing will cause it to deviate except that (i.e. the Dunya)." [1] [Reported by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad (6/24), Sunan Ibn Maajah (no.5) and Shaykh al-Albaanee rahimahullaah declared it Hasan.

Similarly, those who love the servant such as his friends and those who hate him such as his enemies; then those who love him will draw him towards them. And if the love that they have for him is not for the sake of Allaah, then that is from those things which will cut him off from Allaah. And those who hate him will harm him and they will have enmity and hostility for him. So they will distract and preoccupy him away from Allaah through their harm. And if his friends who love him for other than the sake of Allaah were benevolent to him; then their benevolence to him obligates that he has love for them, and it draws his heart to them - and even if he was not upon uprightness (al-Istiqaamah) - and it obligates that he repays and reciprocates (that benevolence) to them. Hence, they will cut him off from Allaah and His worship.

So the trials and tribulations will not be removed from the heart until the whole of the religion of the servant is for the sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. And his love is for the sake of Allaah and whatever Allaah loves, and his hatred is for the sake of Allaah and whatever Allaah hates. And similar to that is his allegiance and enmity.

------------------------------
[1] On the authority of Aboo Dardaa, who said: "The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) came to us while we were talking about poverty and that we feared it. He said: ‘Is it poverty that you fear? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul,  the Dunya (worldly life) will descend upon you in abundance (i.e. its vast riches and comforts), such that nothing will cause the heart of a person among you to deviate except that. By Allaah, I have left you upon the likes of a clear path; its night and its day are the same (i.e. due to its clarity).’"

Tawheed The Foundation In Purification Of The Heart & Soul

By Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751) rahimahullaah

Tawheed The Foundation In Purification Of The Heart & Soul

By Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751) rahimahullaah

And woe to Al-Mushrikoon (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah, polytheists and idolaters). Those who do not come with the Zakaat (the Tawheed) and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter." [Surah Fussilat: 6-7].

Most of the Mufassiroon (the scholars of Tafseer) from the Salaf and those who came after them said: "It (i.e. Zakaat in the Aayah) is Tawheed (the Oness and Unity of Allaah); the testimony that there is none worthy of being worshipped except  Allaah (Laa ilaahaa illallaah), and it is the Eemaan by way of which the heart is purified. Since it comprises the negation in the heart of ilaahiyyah (divinity and deification) to whatever is other than al-Haqq (the Truth - Allaah) - and that is a purification. And it is also affirmation of the ilaahiyyah of Allaah - the One free from all imperfections. And it (Tawheed) is the foundation of every type of purification and Namaa' (growth and development). For indeed purification, even though its foundation is an-Namaa (growth and development), increase and al-Barakah (blessings), however, it is only attained by removing the evil. And for this reason, purification consists of both of these two matters (i.e. growth and removal). So the foundation with regards to which the hearts and souls are purified and cleansed is at-Tawheed. At-Tazkiyyah (purification) means to make something cleansed and pure; it is either regarding its essence (of a thing or person) or it is about creed and report (i.e. knowledge)."

He said: No, but rather he heard from me al-Mustakhraj* which I extracted upon (the Hadeeth of Saheeh) Muslim, so whenever he comes across a Sunnah that he had not acted upon in the past, he loves to act upon it during the same day or the night. And he heard from amongst that which was read out to me: 'That the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) prayed in an an Izaar (loin-cloth) and a Ridaa (cloak).' So he loved to practice and act upon this Sunnah before the next day dawns."

*Translator's Side Note: Referring to the Mustakhraj 'Alaa Saheeh Muslim of al-Haafidh Aboo Ja'far Ahmad b. Hamdaan an-Naysabooree al-Heeree (d. 311H). Al-Mustakhraj or the plural form al-Mustakhrajaat are those Hadeeth books that were written specifically upon the Hadeeth works such as Muslim and al-Bukhaaree etc. In the Mustakhrajaat the authors would bring each Hadeeth mentioned in the original work, for example by Muslim, and bring different narrations from that of the original work with his own Asaaneed (chains) without having the author of the original work as a narrator in the Isnaad. So he will have different narrators up to the Shaykh of the original author or he meets with him to a later Shaykh above him, even if it is just the Sahaabee being the same. The text of the Hadeeths from the Mustakhraj must not necessarily be consistent with the wording of the original work. In addition, the Hadeeth in Mustakhraj is not automatically Saheeh as in the original work because the author of the Mustakhraj in its Isnaad brings other narrators that are not from the narrators of the original work. There are numerous benefits of these works, from them: The attainment of high Isnaads (i.e. shorter chains), the understanding of the Hadeeth from the different wordings and additions of the Hadeeth, and ambiguities that may exist in the Isnaad of a Hadeeth or text can be clarified by the version of the Hadeeth found in the Mustakhraj. Those Who Will Be Driven Away From The Hawd (Pool)

Imaam al-Qurtubee (d. 671H) (rahimahullaah) mentions:

"Our scholars (may Allaah have mercy upon them) said: 'Every person that apostates from the religion of Allaah, or introduces innovations in it (i.e. the religion) that which Allaah is not pleased with and for which Allaah did not give any permission then he will be from those who will be driven away from the Hawd (Lake, Pond).

Those that are forcibly removed and the most sternly driven away from it are those who oppose the Jamaa'ah of the Muslims and split away from their path. Such as the Khawaarij with all their differing sects, the Rawaafid (Shee'ah) with their evident misguidance, and the Mu'tazilah with all their different types of Ahwaa (desires); then all of them are al-Mubaddiloon (those who changed and altered the religion).

The same applies to the oppressors who go beyond bounds in tyranny and oppression, and in extinguishing the truth, and killing the people of truth and debasing them, and those who openly commit the Major Sins and they deem sinning and disobedience to be something light and insignificant. And all those who band together from the people of deviation, desires and innovations.'"

By Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan (Hafidhahullaah)

Question:
Noble Shaykh, what matters should a student of knowledge focus upon, should he begin with the books of 'Aqeedah?

Answer:
He should begin with that which is easiest step by step, he should begin with the small treatises and study them with the Mashaykh, then gradually advance to more extensive books and like this he continues.
He does not go to the major extensive books from the very beginning, rather he should progress to them little by little, and gradually advancing to them step by step.

The Innovators Hate The Texts & They Love Concealing Them

The Innovators Hate The Texts & They Love Concealing Them

By Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah

The innovations that are used to contradict and oppose the Book and the Sunnah which the people of innovations call al-Kalaamiyaat (rhetorical speech), Aqliyyaat (intellect and logic), philosophies, or Dhowqiyaat (taste and experience), Wijdiyyaat (findings and discoveries) and Haqaaiq (realities) and so on; then by necessity they (all) comprise the mixing of truth with falsehood and the concealment of the truth. This is a matter that exists and it is known by whoever contemplates and reflects over it.

So you will not find an innovator except that he loves to conceal the texts (from the Book and the Sunnah) that oppose and contradict him. And he hates them (i.e. the texts), he hates to make them manifest, and he hates narrating and speaking concerning them, and hates those who do that (i.e. make them manifest).
It is similar to what some of the Salaf have mentioned: "There is not a person who introduces an innovation (into the religion) except that the sweetness of Hadeeth is removed from his heart."

Furthermore, his statement by which he contradicts the texts then it is inevitable that he mixes truth with falsehood in it. This is through speaking with words that are general and ambiguous.
