Hijacked Loyalties: How the Nazis Exploited Bosnian Muslim Aspirations
13th SS Division "Handžar"
Of all the Nazi leaders, Heinrich Himmler showed the most interest in the idea of an autonomous Muslim army under German command, seeing in the Islamic world a potential ally against the British Empire. Himmler considered the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) a "ridiculous state." At his suggestion, in February 1943, Hitler approved the formation of an SS division composed of Bosnian Muslims.
Ustaše official Alija Šuljak arrived in Tuzla at the end of March 1943 to mobilize the Muslim population for the Bosnian SS division. For that purpose, with the help of the German SS, he held two rallies in Živinice and Gračanica, where he called on Muslims to join the division. At the request of Himmler and prominent Muslim figures, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, visited Zagreb, Sarajevo, and Banja Luka from March 30 to April 10, 1943, where he campaigned for the formation of the Bosnian SS division.
When they failed to gather the required number of volunteers, the Germans resorted to forced mobilization, taking recruits even from the NDH armed forces, thereby severely weakening several of their units. Ultimately, 3,000 Muslims were demobilized from military service in the NDH to join the division, which greatly harmed the morale of the domobrani and Ustaše. The division's official name was the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian), a designation meant to reassure both its Croatian and Muslim members. Nevertheless, it became more widely known as the Handžar Division.
Parts of the Muslim elite supported the formation of the Muslim SS division in the hope that it would help achieve national goals. When Pandža was interrogated by the Partisans later in the fall of 1943, he claimed:
"At the founding of the Muslim SS division, we were told that the division would only serve to maintain peace and order in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that it would not leave that territory.”
He stated that al-Husseini had promised him that:
“this division would certainly remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, that it would be formed and trained there, and that its task would be solely to protect Muslims from those who attacked them.”
He also said he had been told:
“that the division would make it possible for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be excluded from the NDH and for an autonomous Bosnia and Herzegovina to be created, which would join the new German order.”
In reality, the project fell short of the expectations of Muslim autonomists, and the division's formation caused discord among the leaders of Muslim militias in eastern Bosnia. The division—unlike the militias—was an offensive formation capable of military operations beyond Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thus, by recruiting Muslims, it risked leaving their homes, villages, and towns unprotected. Its absence from Bosnia and Herzegovina for training facilitated Chetnik and Partisan attacks on Muslim areas during 1943. This also acted as a catalyst for large parts of the Muslim population to turn their backs on the collaborators and join the Partisans.

🇧🇦☪ A common misconception that Muslims have about Bosnia when they visit is that they assume all the food is halal because Bosnia is a Muslim-majority country. That is incorrect. Always check whether the food is halal and whether what you are buying is connected to Israel. One food you should always be very skeptical of is ice cream—especially avoid ice cream made by "Ledo," a Croatian manufacturer owned by Americans. They used to have a halal certificate, but they got rid of it because it costs less, and they dominate the market in Bosnia, so they don’t fear any backlash.
There have also been disturbing incidents involving bakeries in majority-Muslim areas, owned by non-Muslims, who intentionally used haram ingredients out of hostility toward Muslims. Those places usually get boycotted and shut down, but I’m mentioning this so Muslims who plan to visit are aware of the social climate.

🇲🇪☪☦ Forced Conversions in Plav and Gusinje (1912)
Every Balkan Orthodox narrative that accuses Muslims of spreading Islam through forced conversions is, in truth, an admission of their own crimes.
A historical documentary highlights the 1912 attempt by the Montenegrin government to Christianize the Muslims of Plav and Gusinje.
🔻 Muslim women were forced to remove their hijabs and dance publicly in front of men—something never seen before in the region.
🔻 Out of 12,500 forced conversions, every single one returned to Islam once freedom of religion was restored.

Four state-of-the-art KIRPI II armored vehicles have arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina today, part of a donation from the Republic of Türkiye to the Armed Forces of BiH.
🎥 Defense Minister Zukan Helez shared a video showing the arrival.
During an April meeting in Antalya, Minister Helez and Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler finalized the donation agreement—part of a larger plan for 32 vehicles. After customs clearance, the vehicles will enter service.
🔹 Türkiye also confirmed the donation of two TB2 Bayraktar drones,
🔹 A smaller UAV under NATO’s DCB program (includes training for pilots & technicians),
🔹 An anti-drone system to counter surveillance threats,
🔹 And a UH-1H helicopter for the Air Forces, set to arrive in autumn 2025—with pilot training on Bell simulators also secured.
A major step forward for Bosnian defense capabilities.

🇧🇦 Vera za večeru sa Alijevom 🇦🇿
Another gem has emerged from our dear Bosnian Milorad Dodik, this time brought to us by Sputnik, where he speaks—concern in his voice—about how the West is trying to subvert the Orthodox world and weaken it in Ukraine and Armenia.
Now, what’s comical about all of this?
This same Dodik sent a heartfelt letter of congratulations to President Ilham Aliyev when the Azerbaijani army defeated that same Orthodox world in all its arrogance, crushed it in Nagorno-Karabakh, and reinstated Azerbaijan’s territorial sovereignty.
The letter reads:
“In the sincere hope that the newly arisen situation will open the possibility for the full integration of this region and its inhabitants, as well as their further development and progress, we once again wish for lasting and stable peace and prosperity for the Karabakh region and the whole of Azerbaijan.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the expressions of my deep respect and good wishes for your personal health and well-being...”

Bosnia ❤️Ostrozac Castle ❤️ Cazin
Isabella von Berks, she gave everything for this castle—Ostrožac Castle (Cazin), standing proudly above the Una River, carries the weight of centuries, shaped by rulers, warriors, and artists alike. Once a stronghold of medieval Bosnian nobility, it later bore the marks of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule, each era adding layers to its story.
Lothar and Isabella von Berks dedicated their savings to restoring Ostrožac Castle in Cazin, not only restoring its remaining structures but also constructing a grand Roman-style villa. By 1902, the castle had been fully renovated, and the couple moved in with their children, making it their home. They embraced life at Ostrožac, frequently engaging with the local community and enjoying their time within the castle’s historic walls. Their stay lasted until 1938, when they were forced to flee to Slavonia, leaving behind the legacy of their dedication to the fortress.
