Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated in Sarajevo on this day in 1914 by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb member of the Young Bosnia movement.

What seemed like a regional tragedy quickly spiraled into a global catastrophe. Within weeks, the tangled web of alliances and rising tensions across Europe ignited the First World War — a conflict that would claim over 16 million lives and reshape the world forever.

🕌 What is Ajvatovica and Why Is It Controversial?

Ajvatovica is the largest annual Islamic gathering in Europe, held in Bosnia. It honors the 15th-century dervish Ajvaz-dedo, who, according to legend, prayed for 40 days until a rock split and brought water to the town.

But Ajvatovica isn't just religious—it's also cultural and national, blending Ottoman heritage, Bosniak identity, and folklore like traditional horsemen processions.

🟩 Supporters see it as a symbol of faith, tradition, and survival.

🟥 Critics call it religious innovation (bid'ah) due to saint veneration and Sufi-style rituals.

Personal Opinion: I am of the view that Ajvatovica should be discontinued and replaced with a different religious gathering at a different location and on a different date, in order to demystify it and eliminate all doubts about its validity.
