In Srebrenica, many children are named after relatives killed in the 1995 genocide — fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers. It's a way for survivors to preserve memory and carry forward the stories of those lost.

One father, Muhamed Avdić, named his son Azam after his own father, who was murdered in the genocide and never found. At first, Muhamed couldn’t bring himself to say the name. “I’d call him ‘little bey’, ‘sugar drop’... It took time,” he said. Azam now plays guitar in the park — like his grandfather once played the violin.

🕌 Imam Ahmed Hrustanović buried his father Rifet in Potočari in 2012. Though he had a son that year, he wasn’t ready to give him the same name. Years later, he did — naming his youngest Rifet. “I avoided the name... I couldn't connect the two Rifets: my father and my son. Now I call him proudly.”

In one local religious class (mekteb), out of 20 children, 15 were named after genocide victims from their families.

Just days before the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, a bust of Vitaly Churkin — the Russian UN ambassador who vetoed the 2015 UN resolution recognizing the genocide — was unveiled in East Sarajevo. Many view the move as a direct provocation and a continuation of Republika Srpska’s denial policy.

🇧🇦🇹🇷 The Young Turks, the Betrayal, and the Annexation of Bosnia

In the shadows of empire and revolution, a fateful decision was made—one that Bosniaks would never forget.

After 30 years of Austro-Hungarian occupation, the Young Turk regime in Istanbul—sworn enemies of the old Ottoman order—quietly signed away Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The annexation of 1908 was not Sultan Abdul Hamid’s doing. He was deposed soon after.
The deal? Recognition of Austro-Hungarian annexation in exchange for 2.5 million Ottoman lira, under the pretext of "compensation for imperial properties".

But the truth was clear to many: this was the final surrender of Bosnia — not by an empire in strength, but by revolutionaries eager to Westernize and sever Islamic ties.

Muslim leaders in Bosnia responded with despair. In a memorandum to the Ottoman Parliament, they wrote:

“You sold us, your most loyal sons, to the enemy — not for strategy, but for silver. We would give 10 million lira, even our children, not to suffer this shameful betrayal.”

The Young Turks, obsessed with European modernity, viewed Bosnia as a burden of the old order. In their minds, cutting it loose served the dream of a new, secular, Turkish republic.

But for the Bosniaks, it was a brutal awakening — the Caliphate they died for had walked away.

A century later, the myth that “the Turks sold us” still echoes.
But it wasn’t the Caliphate who sold Bosnia. It was the Young Turks who abandoned it.

İmparatorluk ve devrim gölgesinde, Boşnakların asla unutamayacağı kader belirleyici bir karar alındı.

Otuz yıllık Avusturya-Macaristan işgalinin ardından, İstanbul’daki Jön Türk rejimi — eski Osmanlı düzeninin yeminli düşmanları — sessizce Bosna-Hersek’i elden çıkardı.

1908 yılındaki ilhak Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in kararı değildi. Zaten kısa süre sonra tahttan indirildi.
Anlaşma neydi? “İmparatorluk mülkleri için tazminat” bahanesiyle Avusturya-Macaristan’ın Bosna’yı ilhakını tanıma karşılığında 2.5 milyon Osmanlı lirası.

Ama Boşnaklar için bu acı bir uyanıştı — uğruna can verdikleri Halifelik arkasını dönmüştü.

Bir asır sonra bile hâlâ yankılanan bir söz var: “Bizi Türkler sattı.”
Ama Bosna’yı satan Halifelik değildi. Onu terk eden Jön Türklerdi.
