Muhamed-Šefket Kurt: The Bosniak Muslim Who Saved Thousands of Serbs in Tuzla from a 1942 Massacre – A Story of Courage, Unity, and Humanity in Bosnia's Darkest Days
Šefket-ef. Kurt is a man who saved Serbs from genocide...

Theologian Muhamed Šefket-efendi Kurt was born in Travnik in 1879. There are few people in the tragic and bloody history of Bosnia who deserve to have their names remembered and mentioned as much as Muhamed Šefket-efendi Kurt, who, through his selfless efforts in January 1942, saved thousands of Tuzla Serbs from massacre. In early January 1942, it became known that the Ustaše were preparing a massacre of Tuzla Serbs in retaliation for the execution of a group of Ustaše captured near Doboj, who had been shot by Chetniks on Mount Ozren. The secret Ustaše committee for the extermination of Tuzla’s Jews and Serbs called the notorious Vjekoslav Montani, the district chief of Brčko, who had already "distinguished" himself by committing crimes, to come to Tuzla with his Ustaše forces and help carry out the retaliation against the Serbs by placing explosives in the Orthodox church, full of worshipers, on Christmas Eve. After that, Serbian Varoš in Tuzla would be destroyed, and the remaining Serbian population would be killed or expelled.

When this plan became known, a conference of prominent Bosniaks of Tuzla was organized. The decision was made to send a three-member delegation, led by Mufti Kurt, to Hochbauer, the German commander of Tuzla, and his deputy, Lieutenant Colonel Wüst, to ask them to prevent the Ustaše’s plan. When the German command saw how strong the opposition from the Bosniaks was, it issued a written order prohibiting the Ustaše from taking any retaliatory measures without their approval. At the same time, similar actions were taken by prominent Tuzla Croats: Jure Begić, Ante Kamenjašević, and others. As a result, the Ustaše did not dare carry out their plan. For their own reasons, the German command quickly posted a notice warning that "no one is allowed to mistreat, seize, or destroy others' property or disturb the people celebrating."

The significance and greatness of Šefket-efendi’s act is best illustrated by an interesting and unusual detail that occurred during his funeral, demonstrating the gratitude the Serbian community of Tuzla felt for the man who had helped them so much.

When Efendi Kurt passed away, Prota Đorđe Jovanović expressed a desire to give a speech at his funeral, and in front of more than 10,000 people, he descended into the grave, received Efendi Kurt’s coffin, and laid it to rest.

Let us remember and celebrate great people, and loudly despise criminals and wrongdoers...

Non-Controversial opinion:
Muslims who consider Christians as close allies in the struggle against Israel are highly naive. The same applies to protecting our civilization from the backward, degenerate ways that have emerged in Western countries. 🗿
