“One day at a certain time, the “Muskal” knocked on his steel armor and called out “Hey, Bosniak!”. Our guard Ahmet Babić carefully lifted his head behind the steel armor after the Russian had called him over with one simple word: “votka”. As Babić stood up to get a better look, at that moment a deadly bullet hit him in the head”

“My usually obedient boys were unrecognizable after that event. They went mad. Day and night they were throwing bombs and explosives on the Russians. That same evening, a unit of volunteers raided the Russian trench, slaughtering everyone inside, and happily returning to our “Bektić Stützpunkt”. The Army Command got interested in this particular case and decided to punish the Russian trenches with heavy artillery for this unsoldierly act”

The northeast Bosnian village of Priluk, 20km from Tuzla, is known for its wooden mosque, said to be 287 years old. The quaint building sits in a small oak forest and is believed to have been built in 1735. 😃

After coffee ☕️ thoughts:

Of all the low-accuracy adjectives which are placed onto the Bosniak people, the most damaging are "European Muslim" and "White Muslim," as they diminish our identity and ignore the story we have to tell. The Bosniak Muslims, whether in Bosnia or Sandžak, bear witness that they, as a people, have been collectively and unjustly sentenced to a bloodthirsty death by the hypocritical and then-dominant powers of the Western world simply due to their identification as Muslims, whether practicing or not. Such is the wickedness and savagery of this act that the so-called international community and UN peacekeeping troops, who were meant to uphold international law, were simply used as tools to further the crime and lure innocent civilians into a false sense of security and a gruesome end.

These events are just one page in a long book of crimes against Muslims in the Balkans, which occurred during and after the Caliphate and which ought to enrage every honest and just Muslim in the world. One might as well draw a parallel between the Muslim experience in the Balkans and the Muslim experience in the lost lands of Andalusia. Given all of these unsightly occurrences placed upon the shoulders of a people who, despite everything, have not succumbed to hatred or wronged themselves by imitating their oppressors, I don't know which adjective is more fitting and accurate for the people that live in this country. I am doubtful that names are even relevant at this point. All that really matters is a hunger and a pursuit for justice and closure, and I believe that day is coming.😃

"His declining health prevented Ali from taking a more active role in advocating for Bosnia at the time, yet Bosnia’s first president, Alija Izetbegovic, recalled in his memoirs how he met the former boxer in October 1995 in New York. Izetbegovic described the encounter as 'another longed-for wish come true.'

'Ali was a legend and not only in boxing,' he wrote, and recalled Ali’s difficulty walking and talking.

'I felt a huge, almost brotherly closeness to this man. I had watched all his matches for years if it was possible and was eagerly rooting for him. Of course, I will never forget that unfortunate match with Fraser almost thirty years ago. Sarajevo was awake that night, but felt subdued the next day. Ali jokingly offered to box… Muhammed Ali was a big boy, a man who made a rough fight turn into an ‘honourable art.’ When I returned to Bosnia, more people asked me about meeting Ali than President Clinton.'

Izetbegovic’s recollection of watching Ali’s matches regularly and his denoscription of meeting him as a wish come true would have been shared by the generations of my parents and grandparents.

The sense of closeness many Muslim Bosniaks felt towards Ali in the 60s and 70s was genuine. Many from those generations still recall waking at night to watch him fight. Perhaps it was only fitting that the icon they had so enthusiastically rooted for came out in support of Bosnia in its hour of need in the 1990s."
