An interesting walk through the old Ottoman parts of Sarajevo in 1974, during the time of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Often perceived with great nostalgia by the people who lived through those times, it now symbolizes a brief period of peace between the Second World War and the Yugoslav wars.

Note: It is rather interesting how, through all these years, the architecture built during Muslim rule remains the main attraction for tourism in the country.

When I went to Bembaša is a traditional sevdalinka, known as the "unofficial anthem of Sarajevo". The text of this sevdalinka is sung to the tune of the Sephardic song "El Dio Alto". There is a belief that the melody of this song was also found in the melody of the Turkish military march "Vatan Marşı". (Sevdalinka, often referred to simply as "sevdah," is a traditional genre of folk music originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina.)
