Legal Cybersecurity advices (offensive/defensive)

The name of this field is extremely broad, the realm of cybersecurity is just as large as any other in tech but tends to be even more dynamic and fast paced. For those willing to study and learn cybersecurity, there are several paths you can choose from and several places to learn

Today, we're going through two of what are considered some of the biggest CyberSec platforms. Hack The Box and Try Hack Me. The reason being these two are the best entry-level to advanced platforms that provide several different modules and courses as well as virtual machines for you to practice while learning. The platforms are also very affordable compared to other options (NEITHER IS FREE, how to get discounts bellow)

Both platforms have modules covering basic to advanced techniques of both offense and defense, which you can choose freely from, some modules about specific things might not be available at a 'pro' level of knowledge but provide a reasonable understanding of most topics

Hack The Box - The platform has 3 main 'services' or sub-platforms if you will.
Academy: which has courses that are rated by difficulty, proficiency and type. The modules are very well built with good explanations and most will not be too difficult, if they are, HTB also has a forum where users can seek help.
Students can apply for student subnoscriptions which are cheaper and will give you access to modules up to 'Tier 2' (there are 5 tiers, from 0 to 4) as well as unlimited uses of their virtual machine used for practice (called 'attack box')

Labs: Labs is the competitive/practical side of the platform, more specifically CTFs and 'Boxes' which are virtual machines meant for you to attack and find the flags to prove your progress. Soma companies keep an eye on Labs and also create their own challenges in order to find people with the skills they seek and get them familiarized with their systems in some cases. You can form teams and create your own boxes if you have a rank that's high enough

CTF: As the name suggests its a competition-oriented sub-platform, some of these CTFs will be restricted to college students only, others are open or private, you can form teams and do everything else as in Labs, the main difference being prizes in money for the CTFs among other perks

ATTENTION: None of these three above are free, but considering the alternatives which will sometimes charge you for 100 USD/mo, HTB is very cheap

Try Hack Me - A platform with just as much to offer but in a small package
— THM has a simpler User Interface and offers both courses and practice in the same place, just as Hack The Box, Try Hack Me has modules that approach different fields and techniques while also allowing for practical learning with their Virtual Machines

— The platform has two main learning methods, being those the modules and the practical ones which are VMs with varying difficulty that will test what you have learned in specific modules or several at once. The competitions are CTFs and King Of The Hill, the same as HTB, meaning you have to attack and defend against other people

— THM also offers student subnoscriptions which allow you to have full access to its content

Both platforms have its pros and cons, but nothing too expressive in regards to capabilities. Both platforms teach things ranging from OSINT and Social Engineering all the way to actual 'blue team' (defensive) and 'red team' (offensive) skills that can both range from specific tools all the way to techniques for specific systems or attacks

You can get student subnoscriptions in both platforms

Both platforms are also good ways to prepare for real Cybersecurity Certifications if you intend to get a job in this area since the difficulty of their VMs vary and some might be harder than the ones in certification tests
A platform worth noting is Virtual Hacking Labs, which costs 100 USD/mo as cited above, most other alternatives will not be as cheap as HTM or THM

🇨🇳 🇰🇭 🏗 Chinese Navy’s Suspected New Overseas Base In Cambodia Now Even Larger

🔶️ The base has grown considerably over the last 18 months, with a pier large enough for aircraft carriers already in place. The new dry dock is being built on reclaimed land. Chinese involvement is indisputable, but Cambodia denies that it is for the Chinese Navy (PLAN).

🔶️ There have been persistent reports of China attempting to expand the global reach of its Navy with a network of overseas bases. Ream in Cambodia has long been on that list. New evidence shows that a large dry dock is now under construction there. As the war in Ukraine shows, these facilities are strategically important.

⚪️ 🇺🇸 📊 The euphemism white flight is widely used in the corporate media & is taught in US Public School Civil Rights Era curriculum.

🔶️ With this dataset, it becomes clear that this derisive term was invented to blame the victims of a campaign that would be called "pogroms" had they happened in Russia.

🔶️ Overlaying it on the frequency the term "white flight" was published in the English language tells much of the story.

📝 Kulak:
"There is not a single year after 1970 when the Black on White homicide rate is not atleast 1000 murders above the 1960 baseline

⬛️ this is what the Civil Rights Act and MLK accomplished, the murder of 10s of thousands of white Americans and the Ethnic Cleansing of American cities."

⚪️ 🇺🇸 US Army overturns convictions of 110 Black soldiers charged in 1917 Houston riot

📝 "If you were wondering what was going on in the US Army today, they just overturned the convictions of 110 mutinous black soldiers who shot white people at random in Houston in 1917" - Mystery Grove Publishing

⚪️ 🇺🇸 📊 We can get some interesting historical context as we extend our timeline back before the Civil Rights Era was in full force.
Indeed, from 1964 to 1972, these numbers doubled (on both sides!)

And the 2020s have really taken us backwards...

📝 247 Drip:
"This only gets crazier when you normalize for population

Population: 12.1% black, 57.8% white

155,785/12.1% = 1,287,479

52,518/57.8% = 90,862

⬛️ So a black person is roughly 14.17 times more likely to murder a white person than a white person is to murder a black person"

🇮🇱🇮🇱🌐🇵🇸📰 The Jerusalem Post: Israeli minister calls for widespread Palestinian emigration to Western Countries

➡️ Israel Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for voluntary emigration of Palestinians to Western countries on Tuesday in response to an op-ed by Likud MK Danny Danon and Yesh Atid MK Ram Ben Barak that was published in the Wall Street Journal and called on Western countries to accept Gazan refugees.

"I welcome the initiative of willing relocation of Gaza Arabs to countries worldwide,"
Smotrich wrote. "This is the right humanitarian solution for the residents of Gaza and the whole area after 75 years of being poor refugees. The majority of Gaza is fourth and fifth generations to 1948 refugees who, instead of being rehabilitated long ago like hundreds of millions of refugees around the world, were held hostage in Gaza in poverty and overcrowding and were a symbol of the desire to destroy the State of Israel and of the refugees' return to Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, and Tiberias."

➡️ He went on to say this has bred the hatred for Israel and Jews "upon which the population in Gaza is raised and educated" and led them to believe that the only solution is the destruction of Israel.

🇾🇪 Leader of Ansarullah in Yemen, Abdul Malik Badr Al-Deen Al-Houthi:

– Our drone and missile forces have been carrying out extensive attacks deep inside occupied Palestine, and this will continue.

– Our eyes are open, monitoring and searching for any Israeli ships in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab in particular, and area bordering Yemeni territorial waters.

– We ask the countries that seperate our territory geographically from Palestine to open a land corridor. If we had a land route to occupied Palestine, our people would have brought hundreds of thousands of heroic Mujahideen to fight the Zionists.

– The Israelis do not put their flags on their ships and turn off their responders in the Red Sea, to try hiding from us. But we will not hesitate to find and target them when possible.

⚡️🇵🇸 Israel has received over 7,000 tons of ammunition, spare parts, and military equipment since the 7th of October.

The aid has been delivered through 123 cargo flights and 7 merchant ships.

However, we have not yet hit the levels of Operation Nickel Grass in 1973, where the US supplied over 24,000 tons of military aid to Israel over a period of three weeks.

⚡️🇵🇸 "Israel Defense", a prominent Israeli outlet in security and political affairs, states that Israel "must threaten Egypt", including facing the real possibility on attacking and opening a new front on Egypt.

The Military Magazine also accuses Egypt, Iran, Yemen, and Syria, of militarily and politically supporting "terrorists", stating that Egypt "clearly" allowed smuggling into the Gaza Strip and that has allowed Hamas to establish a massive stockpile of war material.

The magazine also clearly accused Egypt of violating the 1979 Camp David agreement.

The Israeli Military Magazine states the following violations on the side of Egypt.

1) Egypt constructed three military airports, while there are supposed to be none.

2) Egypt has over 100 tanks in Rafah, while none are allowed.

3) Egypt has established 6 military crossings over the Suez Canal, which is not allowed.

4) Egypt has more than 1 division that is beyond the 60 kilometers allowed by Camp David and subsequent Israeli allowances.

5) 3 Radar stations are in Sinai, which are not allowed by Camp David.

The Israel Defense Magazine states that Israel has also failed , tactically and strategically speaking, due to Israeli negotiations with armed forces and militant groups, and that a militaristic and warlike approach is required.

🇮🇱🇵🇸 As the war escalates, the balance of power does not favor Israel conventionally

Israel threatening to bomb Egyptian aid convoys made a lot of sense once upon a time. But like everything else in the West, at some point people are just trading on 50+ year old narratives of relative strengths and weaknesses.

🛢 🇺🇸 💵 US plans to buy 1.2 million barrels of oil for Strategic Petroleum Reserve

🔶️ As oil prices have risen on production cutbacks by Saudi Arabia and Russia, it has been difficult for the administration to buy back oil for the reserve. Last month it raised the price at which it hopes to buy back oil to $79 or less a barrel, up from an earlier price range of about $68 to $72.

🔶️ Last month the Energy Department said it hopes to buy 3 million barrels for December delivery and another 3 million for January at the higher price. It said it expects to issue additional oil purchase solicitations for the reserve on a monthly basis through at least May 2024.
