Clinic and Laboratory Integration Program

The Cancer Research Institute funds research aimed at furthering the development of immunological approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer. The Institute's mission is to bring effective immune system-based therapies to cancer patients sooner.

The Clinic and Laboratory Integration Program (CLIP) grants provide catalytic support for translational laboratory studies designed to answer new specific scientific questions that arise in the clinic, with special focus on improving immunotherapy for cancer patients.

CLIP grants provide up to $200,000 over a two-year period.

iATLAS
CRI Awards Grant to Develop Powerful Genomic Data Resource for Cancer Immunotherapy Researchers

The CRI iAtlas database is the first comprehensive effort in immuno-oncology to address the recent National Cancer Moonshot Blue Ribbon Panel recommendation to establish a pan-cancer immune atlas that would help catalyze new research in cancer immunotherapy.

The CRI iAtlas will serve as a central knowledge base to capture data on the tumor microenvironment and its impact on anti-cancer immune responses. Data generated by the working group, which includes molecular profiling of over 10,000 tumors across 33 tumor types as well as a series of results on immune-tumor interaction and response mechanisms, will provide rich characterizations of the relationship between tumors and the immune microenvironment and its impact on patient outcomes:

Comparison of the effects of adipose tissue mesenchymal stromal cell-derived exosomes with conditioned media on neutrophil function and apoptosis

New paper by USERN interest groups

🌀Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs)-derived exosomes and conditioned media (CM) increased neutrophil phagocytosis capacity.

🌀The MSC-CM augmented neutrophil reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, but it couldn’t decrease neutrophil apoptosis.

🌀MSC-xosomes could decrease neutrophil apoptosis.

🌀MSC-exosomes and CM may be useful for increasing immunity by improving neutrophil function and survival.

IL-17 and colorectal cancer: From carcinogenesis to treatment

New paper by USERN interest groups

🌀Interleukin-17 can promote colorectal cancer tumorigenesis by several pathways.

🌀Interleukin-17 is associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in colorectal cancer.

🌀Interleukin-17 is a protective cytokineagainst colorectal cancer.

🌀Interleukin-17 can be used as a diagnostic marker in colorectal cancer.

🌀Interleukin-17 has been a new target in treatment of colorectal cancer patients.

Natural Killer Cells and Cancer Therapy, What We Know and Where We Are Going

💠New Paper by CIP

Natural killer (NK) cells are among the significant components of innate immune system and they have come to the first line of defense against tumor cells developing inside the body. CD56lo/CD16+ NK cells are highly cytotoxic and CD56hi NK cells can produce cytokines and perform a regulatory function. Specific features of NK cells have made them a unique choice for cancer immunotherapy. Simple interventions like cytokine-injection to boost the internal NK cells were the first trials to target these cells. Nowadays, many other types of intervention are under investigation, such as adoptive NK cell immunotherapy. In this paper, we will discuss the biology and function of NK cells in cancer immunosurveillance and therapeutic approaches against cancer via using NK cells.

Nanoparticle-siRNA: a potential strategy for ovarian cancer therapy?

🌀New paper by CIP

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common causes of mortality throughout the world. Unfortunately, chemotherapy has failed to cure advanced cancers developing multidrug resistance (MDR). Moreover, it has critical side effects because of nonspecific toxicity. Thanks to specific silencing of oncogenes and MDR-associated genes, nano-siRNA drugs can be a great help address the limitations of chemotherapy. Here, we review the current advances in nanoparticle-mediated siRNA delivery strategies such as polymeric- and lipid-based systems, rigid nanoparticles and nanoparticles coupled to specific ligand systems. Nanoparticle-based codelivery of anticancer drugs and siRNA targeting various mechanisms of MDR is a cutting-edge strategy for ovarian cancer therapy, which is completely discussed in this review.
