Kazan: A city of contrasts and cultural treasures

🇷🇺 Kazan is a city which surprises with its diversity and uniqueness. It brings together elements of eastern and western cultures, as well as representing a mixture of religions, mentalities and histories.

On the one hand, it is a modern megapolis with futuristic skyscrapers and, on the other, a city with a thousand year history where you can see ancient buildings and architectural monuments.

In Kazan you can find everything, from traditional mosques and orthodox churches to modern museums and theatres. The city is also famous for its cultural events such as festivals, concerts and exhibitions.

☀️ Best time of year to visit Kazan

If you are planning to visit Kazan, the best time to do so is from May to September. During this period the weather in the city is most pleasant and you will be able to fully immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of Tatarstan. However, if you prefer quieter trips, it is worth going at the end of March or the beginning of November during autumn.

✈️ How to get to Kazan

The most convenient way to get to Kazan is by airplane. The Kazan International Airport named after Gabdulla Tukay accepts flights from all over Russia and many cities abroad.

You can get from the airport to the city centre by bus or taxi.

😍 7 things to do in Kazan

1. Take photographs of all the cats you come across on the way: live ones, sculptures, souvenirs. After all it was the descendants of the Kazan Cat who today guard the priceless collection of the Hermitage.

2. Take a day to sail by boat to the island of Sviyazhsk - a quiet, sacred and promised land.

3. Take a ride on the Ferris wheel in the park "Around the world" located next to the Millennium Bridge. From the top you can enjoy a stunning panorama of the Volga, the Kazanka and the Kremlin.

4. Eat your fill of chak-chak, belyashi, shulpa and sherbet - such familiar dishes which in Kazan acquire not only a special sound but also a special taste.

5. At least look from afar at one of the ultramodern and futuristic sports complexes built for the 2013 Universiade.

6. You won't be able to resist buying yourself some painted and embroidered tubeteikas, slippers and dressing gowns on Bauman Street.

7. Visit the "Soyuzmultpark" - a place where the heroes of Russian cartoons come to life.

🚶‍♀️ Main sights of Kazan and places to go for a walk

Visiting a city with a thousand year history means you are duty bound to make a thorough acquaintance with its symbolic places. Even a cursory examination of the Kazan Kremlin with a visit to the Kul Sharif mosque and the Annunciation Cathedral will take about 2 hours.

You need to set aside at least a day for the Kremlin with its palaces, churches, many museums and one of the largest mosques in Europe. And the next day find a reason to go back to Kul Sharif or to the Syuyumbike Tower.

There are many interesting places to go for a walk in Kazan, and the most popular tourist route runs along the pedestrian Bauman Street. A stone's throw from the Kremlin you can find architectural monuments from different eras, original examples of urban sculpture, gift shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants.

Local residents and visitors to the city like to walk along the Kremlin Embankment, which stretches along the bank of the Volga from the Kremlin to the 1000th Anniversary of Kazan Museum. In summer you can go rollerblading and cycling here, and in winter they put on the New Year illuminations and flood the skating rink. From the embankment there are some beautiful views of the Kazan Kremlin and the Millennium Bridge.

For those who like to relax in nature it is worth going to the Gorky-Ometyevsky forest - Kazan's biggest park. This area of forest, located in the Sovetsky district, is surrounded by urban development and laid out in accordance with the most modern requirements.

😳 One of the symbols of traditional Russian life, the samovar, is an ancient Chinese invention. Of course, not the samovar in its entirety, but a device close in design.

🇷🇺 The first samovars in Russia were expensive, passed down through generations, and considered a sign of wealth. By the way, the original Russian souvenir – the matryoshka doll – also comes from China.

📝 The proverb of the day

The following Russian proverb should be familiar to the foreign population, as it has its own analogues and sounds almost verbatim.

«Яблоко от яблони недалеко падает»
(yabloko ot yanlony nedaleko padaet).

This is how it sounds in Russian.
And in other languages it’s almost verbatim similar: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

The essence of the proverb is quite simple. This is most often said in cases of obvious similarity in the characters of the child and his parents.

🇷🇺 Vladivostok is a city with a rich history and a unique geographical location. It is one of the most remote outposts of the Russian Empire, the terminus of the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, and the largest seaport in the country.

Vladivostok has always held significant political and economic importance for Russia. The city’s unique terraced landscape, situated between the Amur and Ussuri Bays and the Golden Horn Bay, led the famous traveler Fridtjof Nansen to compare Vladivostok with Naples.

In the 1930s, Nikita Khrushchev called for the city to be turned into a second San Francisco. Although the Soviet leader’s idea was not fully realized, Vladivostok remains an atmospheric, distinctive, and unique city.

☀️Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Vladivostok is in August, September, and October. During this period, the sea temperature warms up to +25°C, and the autumn weather is warm and sunny.

✈️How to Get to Vladivostok

Due to its geographical location, reaching Vladivostok requires a long journey. From abroad, you will need to make several connections to reach Moscow. From the capital, the simplest way to get to Vladivostok is by plane, with a flight time of about 8 hours.

For those who enjoy the romance of rail travel, you can embark on a train journey from Yaroslavsky Station. The journey takes almost a week. Before the pandemic, this option was popular among foreign tourists as a way to experience Russia from a train window.

Planes land 40 km from the city, and it takes about an hour to reach the center from the airport.

🚂How to Get from the Airport

You can reach the city center from the airport in an hour. Three transportation options are available: train, bus, and taxi, which can be booked through the Yandex.Taxi app or at the taxi stand in the airport.

🍜Cuisine and Restaurants in Vladivostok

The hallmark of Far Eastern cuisine is the bounty of the sea and taiga. Everything caught and gathered is prepared and served at the table. The sea delicacies include scallops, mussels, sea cucumbers, crabs, shrimp, octopus, while the taiga offers pine nuts, actinidia, lemongrass, ferns, wild garlic, mushrooms, and berries.

A culinary and historical monument preserved from Soviet times is the “Lesnaya Zaimka” restaurant. Its hunting cuisine was enjoyed by Brezhnev, Ford, and other famous figures. Another iconic place is the panoramic restaurant “Vysota,” located on the top of Eagle’s Nest Hill, offering not only delicious dishes but also a magnificent panoramic view.

When taking a gastronomic tour of local restaurants, be sure to try fern soup, squid ink croutons, grilled squid, mussel pilaf, venison stroganina, and Japanese dorayaki with maple syrup. The cost of a meal starts at 900 rubles.

🚶‍♀️Where to Walk and Sightseeing

It’s best to start exploring the city with a stroll along American and Lenin Streets, now Svetlanskaya Street. Almost every building on it is a historical monument. Slightly higher up is Admiral Fokin Street, the “Arbat of Vladivostok.” From its area, there is a view of Amur Bay. At exactly noon, a signal cannon is fired from here.

The Golden Bridge, or the Bridge over the Golden Horn, connects the shores of the bay of the same name. It is a cable-stayed structure with the longest main span in the world.

The Sports Embankment on the shore of Amur Bay is a favorite recreation spot for locals, with a beautiful parade embankment and yacht club. From here, you can reach Tokarevsky Cape and Egersheld Lighthouse — the farthest point on the mainland.

🏛Museums

The capital of Primorye is rich in museums. The Arseniev Museum introduces the history of the Far East from ancient times to the present day. The Sukhanov House Museum tells about life in pre-revolutionary Russia, and masterpieces of Russian and foreign painting are exhibited in the Primorye Art Gallery.

⚡️Moscow Calls for Increased African Representation on UN Security Council

📰🇷🇺🇺🇳 Russia has called for greater representation of Africa on the UN Security Council, highlighting the need to address historical injustice and recognize the contemporary role of African states.

"Africa's weak representation on the Security Council does not correspond to its current role, while Western countries are massively overrepresented," Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said at a council meeting.

Polyanskiy noted that "we see expansion as a logical and long-overdue step towards rectifying historical injustice, primarily with regard to African states.”

⁉️ The issue of increasing African representation on the UN Security Council remains topical and requires further discussion and consensus among all UN members. Moscow's call could serve as a catalyst for long-awaited changes in the structure of this key international body.
