Rostov Veliky is a small yet proud city that stands as one of the brightest pearls in Russia's Golden Ring. With a population of just over 30,000, this city has managed to preserve its historical appearance and cultural heritage. Every trip to Rostov Veliky is a true journey through time, allowing one to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ancient Rus.
Rostov Veliky can be visited at any time of the year thanks to its temperate continental climate. In summer, it is not too hot, and the coolness emanating from Lake Nero creates comfortable conditions for walking. In winter, the city transforms into a real fairy tale, when the snowy landscapes add a special atmosphere to its ancient streets.
Rostov Veliky is a small town with no airport, so you will have to get there via Moscow. From Moscow, you can travel to Rostov Veliky by train, bus, or car. The most comfortable option is, of course, by car, and the distance to the city is only 200 kilometers. However, it is worth considering that Moscow traffic jams can have an unpredictable impact on the travel time.
If you prefer a more economical option, then you can choose the bus. However, here too, the travel time can be unpredictable. For those who love to travel to the rhythm of the wheels, the most punctual mode of transport will be the train, which departs several times a day.
🏙 City Districts
Rostov Veliky is a compact city where every attraction is within walking distance. The Kremlin, Lake Nero, and the city's main museums can easily be explored on foot, so when choosing accommodation, you don't have to worry about its location.
For exploring Rostov, it is best to choose a walking route. The city is rich in architectural monuments (there are about 324 of them, of which almost 100 are of federal importance), and leisurely walks will allow you to enjoy their beauty. In summer, it is especially pleasant to take a boat trip on Lake Nero, for example, on the motor ship "Zarya". An hour-long cruise will cost about 500 rubles.
Rostov Veliky offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of real Russian cuisine. It is recommended to try dumplings stuffed with pike caught in Lake Nero, as well as pike perch in two versions - in the form of Rostov fish soup and a mysterious dish called "telnoye". If you plan to visit Rostov in May, do not miss the "Velikaya Rostovskaya ukha" festival, which takes place as part of the City Day.
Local cafes also offer a variety of delicacies, especially mushrooms picked in the surrounding forests. Quench your thirst with traditional Russian drinks: kvass, mors, sbiten, and mead.
The main attraction of the city is the Rostov Kremlin. It is a magnificent complex with numerous domes, arched passages, and the Assumption Cathedral. The Kremlin is so large and interesting that it is almost impossible to see it all in one day.
Another interesting place is the Museum of the Frog Princess. More than 2,000 frogs of various shapes and sizes are collected in an old merchant building, making a visit to it unforgettable.
Art and craft lovers can visit the museum at the "Rostovskaya Finift" factory, where you can see how the famous miniatures are created. Or head to the "Khors" gallery and the House of Crafts.

It is associated with kalach - a traditional Russian bread in the shape of a lock with a handle. Kalachs were usually eaten by holding onto this very handle. This ensured basic hygiene: people did not eat what they touched with their hands; after eating the kalach, the handle was thrown away or given to beggars or dogs. Well, about those who picked up these pieces of bread, they said "reached the handle" - that is, they found themselves in a difficult financial situation, became impoverished.
