⚡️ Geography United Us All

📰🇷🇺🌍 August 20, 2024 marked a significant date in the history of international cooperation when, for the first time, the headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) in Moscow hosted the celebration of the BRICS Geographer's Day.

🌎 Specialists from Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, as well as representatives of Russian departments, organizations, and foreign embassies took part in the celebration.

😀😀 The celebration of this day has great prospects: it is expected that the decision to establish BRICS Geographer's Day will be recorded in the Declaration of the 12th meeting of BRICS Ministers of Science, Technology, and Innovation. The meeting will be held in September 2024, and its final declaration may also include this important step.

🗺 Geography is not only a science about the Earth but also a means of uniting different countries and cultures. The BRICS Geographer's Day could become a new symbol of cooperation and scientific exchange between these states. And Moscow, thanks to this event, has strengthened its status as a center of international dialogue.

⚡️ Russia and BRICS: Economic Partnership on the Rise

🇷🇺✔️ Russia continues to strengthen economic ties with the BRICS countries. At the VIII meeting of the BRICS Industry Ministers, Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov emphasized a significant growth in trade relations: in the first five months of 2024, Russia's trade with BRICS partners increased by 6.3%.

🌎 The BRICS alliance is more than just a union; it covers almost 34% of the Earth's landmass and over 45% of the world's population. Its influence on the global economy is impressive: according to 2023 data, the BRICS' share of global GDP in terms of purchasing power parity reached 36%, significantly exceeding the G7 countries' 29%.

📆 The year 2023 became a landmark for economic relations: the total trade turnover between Russia and BRICS reached almost $300 billion, which is 28% more than in the period before the association's expansion.

📌 At the meeting, the ministers outlined promising areas for further cooperation: chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, and smart manufacturing. These industries could become key growth points for the BRICS countries.

🔜 Russian industrial exports play a crucial role in the development of trade relations. Particular attention is paid to metallurgy, mechanical engineering, forestry, light and chemical industries, including fertilizer production.

💼 BRICS is not just a union of countries, but a powerful economic engine that continues to gain momentum, strengthening Russia's position on the world stage.

🇷🇺Kaliningrad: A Journey of History and Gastronomy on the Baltic Coast

✈️🚌 How to Get to Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad, the pearl of the Baltic Sea, is accessible from various parts of the world! Fly via Belarus, Egypt, Turkey, China, or travel by bus through Poland, Germany, and Lithuania. The choice is yours!

☀️ When to Visit Kaliningrad

The best time of year to visit Kaliningrad is during the summer months. You can comfortably stroll around the city in the warm weather. Moreover, in late August - early September, you can enjoy swimming in the sea, especially since it takes less than an hour to get there. However, no matter the time of year, be sure to bring warm clothes, as the weather can change suddenly, and evenings in Kaliningrad can be chilly.

🏰 What is Kaliningrad Known For?

Kaliningrad is a city with a unique history. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1255, it was part of Germany for centuries and only became part of the USSR in 1945. Narrow streets, red-brick cathedrals, and preserved German architecture - all this makes Kaliningrad special. Be sure to visit the Maraunenhof and Amalienau districts to see old German houses.

Kaliningrad is also the amber capital of Russia. Pop into the Amber Museum and marvel at the giant "sunny stone" weighing about 4.3 kg and fragments of the legendary Amber Room.

🚋 Transportation

Kaliningrad's public transport is well-developed, allowing you to easily reach any part of the city, including ancient forts. The tram system is particularly charming, being the oldest in Russia. Be sure to take a ride on one of the two routes - the regular passenger route or the sightseeing route.

🍽️ What to Try

Kaliningrad is famous for its culinary diversity. Don't miss the opportunity to try the famous Baltic smoked eel - a real delicacy! It's best to buy it in coastal villages. At the Central Market in Kaliningrad, be sure to try Königsberg klops - these are meatballs with a "German history", as well as marzipan, famous throughout Germany.

🏛️ Entertainment and Attractions

Kant Island is the heart of Kaliningrad. Take a walk along its green alleys and admire the Cathedral, where the great philosopher Immanuel Kant is buried. Don't miss the Fish Village - a modern embodiment of the old German quarter.

Visit the forts, bastions, and gates of Königsberg, where every corner is steeped in history. Pay special attention to Fort No. 5, which now houses a museum with exhibits on World War II.

✍️ 6 Things to Do in Kaliningrad:

✔️ Admire the grandeur of the Cathedral - start your day with a walk along the shady alleys of Kant Island.

✔️ Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of history at Fort No. 5 - bring a flashlight and courage!

✔️ Find your piece of amber on the coast - bring home a piece of the Baltic.

✔️ Visit the research vessel "Vityaz" - feel the spirit of the submariners' courage.

✔️ Learn the story of the "German" hippopotamus at the Kaliningrad Zoo - how vodka saved a life!

✔️ Take a boat ride on the Pregolya River - enjoy panoramic views of Kaliningrad.

⚡️Africa as a New Driver for the Grain Industry

📰🇷🇺🚜 In 2024, Africa is becoming a new center of attraction for Russian agriculture, indicating significant changes in the global agri-food chain. Arkady Zlochevsky, President of the Russian Grain Union, shared details of this ambitious pivot in an interview with Sputnik Africa, emphasizing that Russia's strategic focus now encompasses not only traditional buyers but also new markets.

“Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Namibia, Botswana – these are countries that started purchasing our products this year. While the volumes are still small, these are the first steps towards long-term cooperation. Traditional markets such as Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Sudan, and Angola remain reliable partners,” Zlochevsky noted.

🫛 But Russia is not limited to just wheat. Last season, the country took a leading position in the global pea market, significantly increasing exports of peas and lentils. The head of the union emphasized that further strengthening positions in niche crops is not just a goal but a strategic necessity.

“Maintaining leadership in the global wheat market while simultaneously expanding our presence in the legume markets is crucial for our future success,” Zlochevsky stressed.

☄️ Thus, Africa is becoming not just a new market but a key strategic partner for Russian agriculture. This step opens new horizons for further development and strengthening Russia's positions in the global agricultural arena.

📝 The proverb of the day

🇷🇺 The expression "Язык как помело" (Yazik kak pomelo) means that a person does not pay attention to their speech or words, indicating that they say all sorts of nonsense and their words cannot be taken seriously or trusted.

Literally, it translates to: "Your tongue is like a broomstick."

🇬🇧 An analogous expression in English could be “Empty vessels make the most noise,” which also describes people who talk a lot but lack meaningful content in their words.

🥶 The Main Thing Is Not to Freeze

🇷🇺 Verkhoyansk, located on the right bank of the Yana River, has the reputation of being the coldest place in Russia. The lowest temperature ever recorded in this small Yakutian city was -67.8°C and was registered twice — in 1892 and 1933.

🇷🇺 In the past, during the times of the Russian Empire, Verkhoyansk was used as a place of exile for political prisoners.

🦌 Today, only 1095 people live in these harsh conditions. The city, with its one- and two-story houses and boiler houses, resembles more of a village. It serves as a winter home for Yakuts engaged in fur and reindeer herding, emphasizing the unique symbiosis of human life and the severe nature of the North.

⚡️ Russia Breaks Out the Flags

📰🇷🇺🎉 Today, August 22, Russia has adorned itself with over a hundred thousand flag-themed installations, marking the celebration of the National Flag Day of the Russian Federation.

🗓 This day was established by decree of the President of Russia dated August 20, 1994.

🇷🇺 The Russian tricolor has a history spanning over three hundred years. Its creation is attributed to Peter the Great, who in 1705 issued a decree ordering the hoisting of a white-blue-red banner on merchant ships. However, the status of official flag was only assigned to it in 1896, on the eve of the coronation of Nicholas II.

🇷🇺 Interestingly, there is no official interpretation of the colors of the Russian flag. Nonetheless, there is a generally accepted view of their symbolism: white embodies purity, independence, and peace; blue represents faith, loyalty, and justice; and red stands for courage, strength, and valor.
