🚢 A Port Far from the Sea

🌊 Arkhangelsk is the largest city in the European part of Russia, located 35 km from the sea, yet it serves as a major seaport. Ships reach Arkhangelsk via the Northern Dvina River, and its strategic location was chosen by Ivan the Terrible to be a crossroads of trade routes. Thanks to this, in the 16th-17th centuries, Arkhangelsk contributed 50-60% to the Russian treasury.

The historical significance of the city is particularly evident in its maritime heritage: Russia's first maritime school was established here by order of Empress Catherine II, and the Russian tricolor was first raised at the Arkhangelsk shipyard. Arkhangelsk became the cradle of Russian seafaring and continues to play an important role in maritime trade.

🏛 Tourists come to Arkhangelsk to connect with the history of the Russian North, see the ruins of the Novodvinskaya fortress, the northernmost drawbridge in Russia, ancient buildings, the Solovetsky Monastery courtyard, and numerous monuments that tell the story of the city's glorious past.

❄️ What piece of clothing is most often associated with Russian winter?
🇷🇺 In Russian culture, the ushanka hat was not only a headdress but also a reliable wallet for documents and money.

🇷🇺 It was in the lapels of the hat that valuable documents were kept. In the 1960s, it once again became a symbol of Russian identity and status and remains quite popular to this day.

Where There Is More Than One Sun

🌊 The remarkable northern city, Murmansk, is built beyond the Arctic Circle and is located near the Barents Sea, which remains ice-free even in winter, making it a true city of sailors. All enterprises in Murmansk are somehow connected to the sea and fishing, and the city is adorned with monuments dedicated to naval service and the heroic deeds of sailors. On one of the coastal hills stands a giant statue of the defender of the Arctic, affectionately called Alyosha by the locals.

☀️ Despite the harsh climate, Murmansk has a unique atmosphere of romance. Tourists come here to witness the northern lights and another rare atmospheric phenomenon. In winter, over the Kola Peninsula, you can sometimes see two, three, or even five suns at once, caused by the refraction of light in ice crystals, creating a mesmerizing effect.

What is the name of the founder of Saint Petersburg?
🤔Peter the Great came up with the idea of awarding drunkards with medals weighing about seven kilograms.

🥉The cast-iron medal was hung at the police station as punishment for excessive alcohol consumption. It was fastened around the neck with metal rivets so that it could not be removed.

This was quite an effective method of combating drunkenness.

This expression is often used in a humorous or ironic context.
