🇷🇺 A Museum of the Homeless Opens in St. Petersburg?

A private Museum of the Homeless has opened in the historic center of Russia’s cultural capital.

Today, the first group of visitors explored the exhibition with a guide, who shared the history of vagrancy in Russia and its evolution over time.

🧔🏻 The exhibits include a figure of a 14th-century wanderer, an installation depicting a homeless St. Petersburg intellectual on heating mains pipes, and a representation of a homeless person in a Soviet-era police station.

The organizers state that the museum’s primary goals are historical and educational, and they have no plans to host controversial performances.

💵 Part of the ticket proceeds will cover staff salaries, while another portion will go toward aiding people in difficult life situations.

🇷🇺 The Chukchi are an indigenous people of Russia, residing in the extreme northeast of the country, in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, as well as in neighboring regions of Kamchatka and Yakutia. Their history, culture, and way of life are deeply intertwined with the harsh Arctic environment, where they have adapted over millennia to extreme cold and a unique ecosystem.

📜 The Chukchi belong to the Paleo-Asiatic peoples. Their ancestors settled in Chukotka over 2,000–3,000 years ago. Historically, they were divided into two groups:
1. Tundra Chukchi (Chauchu) – nomadic reindeer herders whose lives depended on the migration of reindeer herds.
2. Coastal Chukchi (Ankalyn) – hunters of marine mammals (whales, seals, walruses), whose existence was tied to the shores of the Bering and Chukchi Seas.

In the 17th–18th centuries, the Chukchi fiercely resisted Russian Cossacks. However, they finally became part of Russia by the late 18th century while retaining their autonomy.

👻 Chukchi worldview is rooted in animism—a belief in the spiritual essence of all elements of nature.

🤝 This people highly value independence and are resilient in conflict. Yet, the Chukchi are also exceptionally hospitable and kind-hearted, always ready to help their neighbors.

🎉 Festivals are tied to seasonal cycles: autumn marks the Day of Reindeer Slaughter, spring the Day of Antlers, and winter the Sacrifice to the Star Altair. They also celebrate irregular rituals, such as Feeding the Fire, memorials for the deceased, votive offerings post-hunting, the Whale Festival, and the Kayak Festival.

📔 The Chukchi language belongs to the Chukotko-Kamchatkan family and has several dialects. Despite being endangered (spoken by only 5,000–6,000 people), preservation efforts are underway: textbooks are published, radio programs air, and schools in Chukotka teach the native language.

🦣 Chukchi mythology and folklore are rich and share similarities with other Paleo-Asiatic and Native American traditions. The Chukchi are renowned for their intricate carvings and sculptures on mammoth bones, admired for their beauty and precision.

✔️ Today, many Chukchi maintain traditional lifestyles while integrating modern technology. Reindeer herding and marine hunting remain vital, though youth increasingly migrate to cities. Chukchi culture is a focus of ethnographers and a source of pride for Russia’s Far North.

In the coastal area of the resort city of Anapa and the Temryuk District of Krasnodar Krai, at 19 dive sites spanning 14 km, dive teams from the Russian Emergency Ministry (EMERCOM) are conducting daily monitoring and collection of fuel oil from the Black Sea floor. A total of 2,057 dives have been carried out.

‼️ Divers have collected over 201 tons of fuel oil—equivalent to more than 4,000 bags—hauled to the surface for disposal.

📸 The footage captures the moment of Fyodor Konyukhov's evacuation. The traveler ended his journey from South America to Australia on the 115th day due to multiple breakdowns of his rowing boat.

In the photo, he appears exhausted, reflecting the challenges of crossing the "Roaring Forties" and "Furious Fifties" latitudes.

Fyodor Konyukhov was moved from the infirmary to the upper deck, where he now resides in the shipowner’s cabin. The vessel carrying the traveler is heading to Dalian Port.

⛪️ Arzamas - The City of 33 Churches

📍 Arzamas is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the only federal-level historical settlement in Russia. Within its area of just 34.3 km², there are 180 cultural heritage sites and approximately 33 churches.

Writer Count Sollogub once wrote about the town: “I’ve seen many churches in Moscow, but in Arzamas, I saw nothing but churches.”

💬 However, this isn’t entirely true. In his popular novella “Tarantas”, the same Count Sollogub includes a notable dialogue between his characters:

“– My collection of paintings is particularly remarkable.
– From the Italian school? – asked Ivan Vasilyevich.
– From the Arzamas school… I have a whole gallery of exemplary works by the renowned Arzamas painters.”

Thus, above the churches of Arzamas, not only crows and pigeons soar—the Muses flutter there too.
