🇷🇺 The Russian Analog of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Nevyansk Tower is a unique 18th-century architectural monument built by order of the industrialist Demidov.

Standing 57 meters tall, its southwestern tilt makes it Russia’s answer to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Like its Italian "sister," the Nevyansk Tower captivates with its unusual design and has become a symbol of the city. It even adorns the coat of arms of Nevyansk.

🏜 A Real Desert in Orenburg

🇷🇺 This astonishing place in the steppes of the Orenburg Region creates the sensation that we are closer to Africa and Central Asia than one might imagine.

Sand dunes 6-8 meters high transport us to Egypt or the UAE, letting us experience the atmosphere of a scorching desert!

🌊 The history of this area is linked to an ancient sea. Once a seabed, it vanished, leaving behind sandy barchans.

Historians consider this desert an anomaly for the Orenburg Region!

🐫 It also has ties to Turkic peoples’ history: the Silk Road passed through here, where merchant caravans from Asia traversed these lands.

📍Geolocation: Orenburg Region, Sol-Iletsky District, "Kumak Desert"

🦅 Bird Tower (Ptichya Bashnya)

🏰 The only surviving tower of the Kitaygorod Wall in Moscow. Built between 1535 and 1538 by Italian architect Petrok Maly Fryazin, this blind, semicircular tower resembles a chess rook and stands near the Tretyakov Gates.

A rare example of 16th-century fortification architecture, it survived the large-scale reconstruction of central Moscow in the 1930s because it did not interfere with urban planning.

The origin of its name is unclear. One theory suggests birds nested here; another claims live birds were traded nearby. A third posits it once housed a postal service using pigeon messengers.

Today, it stands as a historical artifact amidst modern developments—a quiet relic of the past in the heart of the city.

📍 Teatralnaya Square, 5с1

😮 The forbidden "Dead Loop" by Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut at the 1972 Olympics was the first and last time the move was documented.

🤸‍♂️ The "Dead Loop" (or "Korbut Flip") involves a backflip after standing on the high bar.

Today, the "Dead Loop" is no longer performed in official competitions—the element is banned by regulations, as gymnasts are not allowed to stand on the top of the uneven bars! Notably, Olga Korbut was always afraid to perform this element during competitions.

After the 1972 Games, Olga starred in feature films, was invited on tours across the USA, and was named Athlete of the Year in the U.S. and the UK. Those mind-blowing gymnastics elements became synonymous with her.

📚 Fascinating Facts About Nevsky Prospekt

📏 Nevsky Prospekt stretches 4.5 km from Palace Square and the Admiralty to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

🪧 Until 1738, it was called “Perspective.” In 1738, it was renamed “Nevskaya Perspective,” and in 1781, it received its modern name, inspired by the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

☀️ Strolls along the avenue are best enjoyed on the even (left) side, as it is the “sunny” side.

🥶 In reality, you should explore every part of Nevsky Prospekt, especially in winter—it’s the warmest area in St. Petersburg!

🌉 The avenue crosses three rivers: the Fontanka (via Anichkov Bridge), the Griboyedov Canal (via Kazansky Bridge), and the Moyka (via Green Bridge).

📐 Its maximum width is 60 meters near Gostiny Dvor, while its narrowest point is 25 meters near the Moyka River.

💡 Nevsky Prospekt was the first street in the city to have centralized lighting.

🚋 Trams ran along Nevsky Prospekt until 1951.
