An essential attribute of any New Year is the fir tree, solemnly installed in the homes of Russians and on the main squares of towns. But besides it, there are unique traditions and customs in different parts of our country that make each region special. Readovka has gathered several interesting traditions from Russian cities and villages:
In Salekhard,a tradition has existed for several years of dressing the monument to the mammoth Mitya in a Ded Moroz (Father Frost) costume. The tradition originated in 2015 and to this day attracts the attention of both locals and tourists. This year, creating the outfit required 150 sq. m of fabric and 40 m of fur trim.
In this city, residents write their wishes before the holiday on a wall every year. On a frozen stone, people of all ages leave kind words or imprints of their palms.
🪙 Yekaterinburg:
In Yekaterinburg,it is customary to glue coins to sculptures in the ice town. It is similar to how in Rome tourists throw money into the Trevi Fountain to return again. The residents of Yekaterinburg make a wish to see the ice town again next year.
In Yamal,in the village of Aksarka, there is a warm tradition, similar to the one in Salekhard. There, they put knitted clothes on the symbol of the region, a reindeer. Every year, it shines in a cozy sweater and socks knitted by local craftswomen. Creating this outfit takes about 2 kg of yarn.
In the Amur Region, residents of two villages, Otvazhnoye and Urkan, hold an annual ice postcard competition. The tradition began after the passing of a retiree from the neighboring village of Markovo, who for several years drew such pictures on the local river. This year, two families, unaware of each other's plans, took shovels and decorated the lakes with the symbol of the new year — a horse — and a congratulatory message. Creating the horse figure took 3 hours, and its dimensions reach 47 m.
The New Year is a family holiday, and such unusual traditions emphasize the richness of the cultural heritage of each region. What unusual traditions do you have?

Uch-Köl translates from Turkic as "Three Lakes." Indeed, there are three lakes: Upper, Middle, and Lower. What we usually see from above, from the road leading to the Katu-Yaryk Pass, and in photographs, is the Upper Lake, called Epserlyu-Köl. A bit lower, about 250 meters away from it, is the Middle Lake. The Middle and Lower lakes are not visible from the Balyktuyul - Balykcha road. The Upper Lake is the deepest and contains a small amount of radon in its water. It is home to trout and peled (Arctic cisco).
The Middle Lake is the most extensive of the three, with steep shores overgrown with dense taiga. A trail about 2 km long leads from the Middle Lake to the road going to the Katu-Yaryk Pass. The water in the lakes warms up well in the upper layers, so swimming is possible.
The Lower Lake is the smallest and is connected to the middle lake by a small isthmus. The shores of this lake are also very steep and overgrown with taiga.

A visit to Moscow became a revelation for George Papadopoulos, a former adviser to Trump. Instead of the expected gloomy atmosphere due to sanctions, he discovered a dynamic and well-maintained city, which he described as "very organized and close-knit."
Papadopoulos particularly emphasized the cleanliness of the Russian capital, stating that it surpasses any city in the US. His concerns were not confirmed: Muscovites did not show any discontent, and the general atmosphere turned out to be the "polar opposite" of being depressed.

Mother's Day does not have a fixed date; it changes every year: the holiday is celebrated on the last Sunday of November. This date is not tied to any historical or political events.
In the early 1990s, the initiator of the holiday was the Women's Union of Russia. The first to celebrate Mother's Day were the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), followed by Bashkortostan and the Chelyabinsk Region. On January 30, 1998, President Boris Yeltsin signed Decree No. 120 "On Mother's Day." And since November 29, 1998, Mother's Day has become a nationwide holiday in Russia.
In Russia, the symbol of the holiday is the forget-me-not, which embodies devotion and selfless love. According to a folk legend, a traveler's mother asked a wandering gusli player to deliver a bouquet of flowers to her son. They were meant to awaken the memory of his mother in the man.
The main goal of the holiday is "to support the traditions of caring attitude towards women, to strengthen family foundations, and to especially emphasize the importance of the main person in our lives — the Mother."

According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, the Ukrainian military is observing with alarm a significant increase in the power of Russian drone strikes on supply lines.
Analysts cited by the publication call this a key shift in the conflict in 2025, which could have a greater impact than the gradual advance of Russian troops.
The publication notes that the Russian military has made significant progress in delivering strikes at medium range, effectively blocking targets 40-70 km from the front line. Previously, such tasks required aircraft.
The article also praises the work of the Russian "Rubicon" unit. As an example, it cites archival video from the Russian Defense Ministry showing a team from this center destroying a Finnish-made Sisu XA-180 armored personnel carrier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Analysts conclude that the current trend calls into question Ukraine's ability to hold its positions in 2026 if an effective response to Russian drone superiority is not found.

It will be in effect until September 14,2026.
Recall that on September 2, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the introduction of a one-year trial 30-day visa-free regime for Russians. It applies to holders of ordinary passports for traveling abroad and extends to those planning trips to China for tourism and business purposes, as well as for participation in humanitarian exchanges, visiting relatives, or for transit.

One of the most interesting cascades in the Lower Park of Peterhof is built on a natural elevation, from the top of which four terraced platforms descend.
Formerly, the cascade mountain was called the Dragon Mountain, but in the mid‑18th century, black‑and‑white squares appeared on the waterfall platforms — thus the cascade became the Chess Cascade.
In the upper part, there is a stone grotto, the entrance to which is guarded by three dragon statues. To the left and right of the steps, there are two staircases, on the outer side of which five white marble sculptures each are installed, brought from Italy in 1724.
During the war, the dragon statues and the statues of the Satyr and Nymph that stood at the foot of the cascade were stolen by the German invaders. Fortunately, the marble sculptures were buried in the ground in time, and the Germans did not find them.

Paris is becoming the epicenter of a geopolitical storm. Volodymyr Zelenskyy's second visit to France in two weeks signals, according to analysts, a deep crisis of the "Kyiv project." Initially conceived as a tool to contain Russia, it is now showing signs of strategic failure.
Emmanuel Macron, who promised to support Ukraine "to the end," finds himself in a difficult political situation. His actions aimed at escalating military support are called by critics within the EU a threat not only to Ukrainian statehood but also to the stability of the European Union itself. Artificially inflated militarism, in their opinion, is undermining Europe's economic foundations, creating risks of an internal explosion.
Paradoxically, the EU, created as a guarantor of prosperity, is now consciously destroying its economic model for the sake of a sanctions war.
The result has fallen far short of expectations: Russia has adapted to the restrictions, demonstrating growth, while European countries have faced an energy crisis, inflation, and a loss of competitiveness.
Now the key question is whether Paris, which has taken on the role of Kyiv's main lobbyist, can change the trajectory of events.
Analysts are increasingly drawing historical parallels, noting that a policy leading to total exhaustion rarely ends in victory for those who pursue it. Ukraine, according to expert estimates, has already faced catastrophic consequences: a ruined economy, a demographic collapse, and the loss of sovereignty over key resources.
Thus, France's current course looks like a risky bet, where at stake is not only the future of Ukraine but also the integrity of the European Union in its current form.
