Pop-up book rigging?

I need to make a rig for a pop-up book. This is a very simple version of it. I have this working with some bones on flat pieces of geometry. It works but I've kind of fudged it. I've found tutorials that go over folding single objects with bones, and ones that go over more complex stuff using XPresso, but not one that folds multiple objects which are connected with bones.

I'm hoping to just use bones but have things connect properly. I'm not quite sure how to do that.

I have the main page folding with a bone. I added bones to the "tab" or "strut" and I was able to parent those bones into the bone rig for the page, but I'm not sure if there's a way to parent the other end of the tab to the tree (green thing), so it moves properly with it. Any ideas? Right now it floats a bit and isn't actually attached.

I'd also like to give the pieces some thickness. If I use Thicken or a Cloth object, the pieces get thicker/thinner as they bend and thin down to nothing in some spots. So I assume I may have to thicken them, make them editable and maybe paint weights so things don't crash or thin down. I'm also getting some odd highlights on the tree as it unfolds (Arnold render), which I assume might be some weirdness from the weighting/rig. Not sure how to fix that.

Thx very much!

X-Particles and Scene Scale

I'm relatively new to X-Particles and am experimenting with some of the tutorials now with the intent on using it to create natural elements for landscape scenes and product shots.

To those of you that are more experienced with XP, I'm curious to know how you work with building particle simulations with consideration to the scale of your scene. If you are building a campfire, do you built it to the size of an actual campfire (like maybe a couple of feet tall) or do you work with it in centimeters and scale up the resulting cache version.

Just asking so that I'll know how to set up my sims going forward. Thanks.

As a new user, would it be advisable to start with Cinema 4D or Blender? Please help

I’m mainly focusing on product visualization and product animation. I’m aware that both software options are capable of handling this kind of work. Since I have access to both, I’ve been testing them out. I really like Cinema 4D’s UI/UX compared to Blender, and it feels easier for me to learn. However, I’m concerned that with the rapid pace of Blender’s innovation, Cinema 4D might become outdated, and that the time spent training in it could end up being a waste.
Please help.

Dear generalists, how do you spread different types of work on your reel?

Hello, dear C4D folk

I'm a generalist Motion Designer+3d Artist who's working on his new demo reel and I've been dwelling over this question: how do you spread different types of work on your reel?

I do mostly 3d Character Animation, Product Animation (both 3d and 2d/Ui), Explainers/Promos and Music Videos. I'm sure many of you also do a lot of different stuff as Motion Designers/Animators, since that's how the business works (at least for a generalist).

Do you make individual sections for each different type of work (e.g: start with all the 3d character animation you wanna show, then move into explainers, etc) or do you mix everything together?

I feel like my 3d stuff is the most interesting I got and I feel like I should put most of it in the first part of the reel, but I don't want to bury other stuff. I also really enjoy doing music videos, even though it's probably the smallest chunk of my work but I'd like to get a few more chances to work on that, so I'm not sure how to proceed about this.

Please let me know your thoughts, thank you!

Noticing most of the new Cinema 4D courses are Korean or Chinese produced?

Hey guys, question. I'm noticing past 2023 most of the new big courses, outside of School of Motion which is US based, a lot of the courses are coming from Korea / China. Courses like Coloso etc.

Do you think there is a reason for this? I know Giant Step is Korean etc, and I'm thinking due to Korean media etc they're pipeline training most of the juniors into Cinema 4D. I then noticed a lot of Chinese companies are also training their users to use it. It appears to me there's more of a push for new courses and demand in Asia than there is in the US. I feel like US is heavily Blender users now, and traditional studio stuff like Maya Houdini.

This is a guess but Maxon's sales team could have even done a push into Asian agency studios. It's good stable software for agency work after all, and easier to learn then Blender.

We of course still have Eyedesyn, and Greyscale Gorilla, all the older guys we used to get training from. I just remember 5 years back when those guys would be dropping new videos every single month and supporting the junior artists like crazy with new education. I just feel like there's way less senior C4D guys creating Youtube tutorials anymore, and with Blender they literally have more videos being dropped per week than anybody. I don't really want to switch though.
