Ukraine’s top Commander Syrskyi:

Fierce battles continue in the suburbs of Sudzha and surrounding areas of the “Kursk” operational zone.

My top priority remains preserving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. If needed, our forces maneuver to more advantageous positions.

Despite increased pressure from Russian and North Korean forces, we will hold the line in Kursk as long as necessary.

The enemy is deploying airborne and special forces to break through defenses, push the Ukrainian Armed Forces out of Kursk, and advance toward Sumy and Kharkiv.

It’s great that we’re including not only EU members but also European partners like the UK, Norway, and Türkiye.

Georgia now faces a new major player in its strategic landscape: China.

The government awarded a Black Sea port project to China Communications Construction Company, canceling a Western-backed consortium’s contract.

Part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, the deep-sea port will serve as China’s gateway to the Caucasus, connecting Asia to Europe via the Middle Corridor, bypassing Russia.

“Georgia is a key link for the middle corridor and Anaklia port could be the pivotal last nail,” Zhou Qian, China’s ambassador to Georgia, said.

Former President Salome Zourabichvili and U.S. officials condemned the move, calling it a setback for Georgia’s Western integration, with the State Department warning it contradicts Georgia’s aspirations to join Western alliances.

The Georgian government defended its decision, citing economic benefits and China’s $600 million investment in the first phase.

NATO's readiness in Europe amid U.S. uncertainty

10,000 NATO troops recently conducted exercises near the Ukrainian border, testing a new rapid reaction force, without U.S. participation. NATO's European militaries have strong defense, but lack air defense, intelligence, and logistics capabilities provided by the United States.

The U.S. provides vital intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, transport aircraft, and command and control to their forces. Most critical in a fight with Russia is Europe's lack of air defenses.

• European military production lags, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says the defense industry is slow and fragmented.

• Europe lacks a unified military command without the U.S. Europe may need to develop its own defense strategy if U.S. support wanes. This would require significant military investments.

NATO's European militaries have a lot of equipment. They have 5,000 tanks and over 2,800 self-propelled artillery systems. Open-source analysts say Russia has 3,000 tanks.

IISS says NATO's European members have around 2,000 jet fighters and other warplanes. The Europeans are upgrading fleets. By 2030, Europe will have over 500 U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets.

European countries have depleted their arsenals by donating equipment to Ukraine and are struggling to replace it all.

Russia's air force has about 1,000 planes, and the IISS says they've lost about one out of every five in combat.
