Two years ago, on June 23, 2023, Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, launched an armed rebellion against Russia’s military leadership.
Wagner forces seized control of military facilities in Rostov-on-Don and began advancing toward Moscow.
Prigozhin accused the Russian Ministry of Defense of corruption and incompetence, particularly in its handling of the war in Ukraine.
The rebellion was abruptly halted on June 24 after a deal brokered by Belarusian President Lukashenko.
Wagner troops withdrew, and Prigozhin was exiled to Belarus.
Two months later, on August 23, 2023, Prigozhin died in a plane crash under suspicious circumstances.
