IDF Northern Brigade commander Lt. Col. Haim Cohen visited the Nova music festival about an hour before Hamas’ October 7 attack but chose not to boost security or halt the event.

Cohen had approved the festival days earlier and, despite seeing thousands of attendees with minimal police presence, assumed it was safe. Most nearby IDF forces weren’t even aware the festival was taking place.

An internal probe later found it was a mistake not to reassess the event’s security or deploy troops, especially given intelligence warnings of unusual Hamas activity.
