Yunan kaynaklarına göre Yunanistan'ın sahip olduğu S-300PMU-1 uzun menzilli hava savunma sisteminin PMU-2 sürümüne yükseltilmesi için Yunanistan ve Rusya arasında müzakereler sürüyor.
Yeni versiyon ile Yunan S-300 hava savunma sistemi Türkiye’nin sahip olduğu S-400 hava savunma sisteminin performansına yaklaşacak.
Harekat yarı çapının 150 km'den 200 km'ye kadar çıkması sonucu Girit'te konuşlu S-300 sistemleri Rodos'un karşısındaki Dalaman Havaalanı'nı, Oniki Adaları ve Girit'in doğusundaki deniz alanını kapsayabilecek.
S-300'ler bugün bazıları NATO üyeleri olmak üzere çok sayıda ülkede bulunuyor. Bunlar arasında NATO üyesi olarak Yunanistan, Bulgaristan ve Slovakya dikkati çekiyor.
Yunanistan, S-300 sistemlerini, Güney Kıbrıs Rum Yönetimi'nin (GKRY) bu sistemi almaya karar vermesi nedeniyle ortaya çıkan krizden sonra aldı. Rum yönetimi 1998'de Rusya'dan S-300 hava savunma sistemi satın almaya karar verdi. Greece is upgrading its S-300’s with the help of Russia…
According to the Greek sources, Athens and Moscow are negotiating for the upgrade of the Greek S-300PMU-1 long range Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system to the PMU-2 level.
With this upgrade, the Greek S-300’s will have close capabilities to the Turkish S-400’s.
The expected upgrade will increase the operational range of the air defense system to 200km and an S-300 positioned in Crete will have a firing range that encapsulates a region that contains the Dalaman Airport located affront of Rhodes Island, Dodecanese, and East of Crete.
Currently, many NATO member operates S-300’s. Greece, Bulgaria, and Slovakia may be given as prominent operators of this system.
Athens has received these systems from the Greek Cypriot government. After the Greek Cypriot government has decided to acquire S-300’s from Russia in 1998, Turkey has strongly opposed to the presence of these systems over the island. Eventually, the Greek Cypriot government was constrained to hand these systems to Greece.
According to the news broadcasted over the international media outlets in 2014, Greek Air Force has tested these systems in 2013, during the “White Eagle” military exercises. On the other hand, no NATO member has criticized these drills.
