Vice News – From “Counterculture” to a U.S. State Department Mouthpiece

➡️Funding:

• Received over $5M in USAID grants for media projects in Ukraine, Venezuela, and Hong Kong.
• Partnered with National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and Open Society Foundations (Soros).
• Works directly with Bellingcat, a known Western intelligence cutout.
• Signed multi-million dollar contract with UK Foreign Office in 2021 to “combat disinformation” in Eastern Europe.

➡️What they do:

Vice once marketed itself as an “anti-establishment” media company. Now, it’s a fully co-opted propaganda arm for U.S. foreign policy, pushing regime change narratives under the guise of investigative journalism.

➡️Major Exposures:

1. USAID Funding for Pro-Opposition Coverage in Venezuela
• In 2017, produced a documentary on Venezuela’s crisis, portraying the Maduro government as a dictatorship while whitewashing the U.S.-backed opposition.
• Leaked USAID records confirm that Vice received funding to promote “democracy” in Venezuela—meaning regime change.
• Ignored the effects of U.S. sanctions, which caused severe food and medicine shortages.

➡️Whitewashing Neo-Nazis in Ukraine

• In 2014, was one of the first Western media outlets to normalize the Azov Nazi Battalion.
• In their 2014 documentary, “The Russians Are Coming,” Vice glorified Azov fighters as “Ukraine’s last hope,” never mentioning their Nazi ideology.
• In 2022, Vice ran a piece claiming “Azov Battalion has changed,” despite its continued use of Nazi symbols and rhetoric.

➡️Spreading Disinformation on Syria to Justify U.S. Bombings

• Central in pushing the 2018 Douma “chemical attack” hoax, which was later debunked by OPCW whistleblowers.
• Released an “investigation” claiming Syrian forces used chemical weapons, even though leaked OPCW emails showed inspectors found no evidence.
• Directly contributed to the U.S., UK, and France launching airstrikes on Syria in April 2018.

➡️The Hong Kong Riots – Selling U.S. Regime Change as a “Pro-Democracy Movement”

• Received USAID funds in 2019 to promote “pro-democracy voices” in Hong Kong—meaning U.S.-backed rioters.
• Their coverage ignored the direct U.S. role in funding and organizing anti-China protests.
• Vice never mentioned that Hong Kong protest leaders like Joshua Wong met with U.S. officials and received NED funding.

➡️Vice’s Financial Meltdown – Propped Up by Western Governments

• Vice declared bankruptcy in May 2023 after years of mismanagement and credibility loss.
• Despite this, it continues receiving government grants for “media development” in conflict zones.
• Has signed new deals with USAID-backed groups to continue operations in Eastern Europe.

Deutsche Welle (DW) – NATO’s State Media in Europe

➡️Funding:

• Receives €390M annually from the German government, with direct input from the German Foreign Office.
• Funded by USAID and NED for “media training” in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
• Partnered with the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), an EU version of NED that finances regime change ops.
• Received an undisclosed amount from the U.S. State Department for “anti-disinformation programs” in Ukraine and Georgia.

➡️What they do:

Deutsche Welle (DW) pretends to be an independent German news outlet, but in reality, it serves as NATO’s media wing in Europe. It systematically pushes anti-Russian, anti-Chinese, and pro-Western narratives, while covering up NATO war crimes.

➡️Major Exposures:

•Promoting NATO Expansion and Smearing Neutral Countries
• Consistently attacks any European government that refuses to fully align with NATO.
• In 2022, ran multiple stories accusing Serbia’s neutrality of being “Russian influence,” despite Serbia’s policy of non-alignment.
• In 2023, ran an exposé on Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, claiming his opposition to NATO expansion was a “threat to democracy.”

➡️Whitewashing Ukraine’s Neo-Nazi Problem

• In 2022, released a documentary attempting to “debunk” claims that Ukraine’s military has a neo-Nazi problem.
• In the documentary, DW called concerns about the Azov Battalion’s Nazi links “Russian disinformation,” even though Azov fighters wear SS insignia and use Nazi slogans.
• During Ukraine’s Independence Day parade in 2023, completely ignored the fact that Ukrainian soldiers were marching with patches featuring Nazi symbols.

➡️Running Cover for NATO’s War Crimes

• DW refuses to critically report on NATO’s destruction of Libya, Serbia, or Syria.
• In 2011, justified NATO’s bombing of Libya as a “humanitarian intervention”—ignoring how it left Libya in chaos.
• Called NATO’s 1999 bombing of Serbia “necessary to stop ethnic violence” while ignoring the illegal use of depleted uranium bombs that caused a surge in cancer rates.

➡️Role in Georgia’s 2023 Anti-Government Protests

• Ran continuous coverage supporting anti-government protests in Georgia, portraying them as “pro-democracy.”
• Leaked documents revealed that DW coordinated its coverage with USAID-funded NGOs working to weaken Georgia’s government.
• Framed the protests as “grassroots,” despite clear evidence of U.S. influence.

➡️“Anti-Disinformation” Projects – A Cover for Western Censorship

• Worksed closely with Facebook and Twitter to deplatform alternative media.
• In 2022, DW was part of an EU-backed “fact-checking” initiative that labeled alternative reporting on Ukraine as “Russian propaganda.”
• Helped push for the censorship of RT and Sputnik across Europe.

Criticism is a weapon of the revolutionary movement, a safeguard against opportunism and ideological decay. Without it, revisionism festers, careerists rise unchecked, and the struggle is diverted into the dead ends of reformism and bourgeois compromise. True revolutionaries do not fear criticism—they engage in it, recognising that only through relentless ideological struggle can the movement remain disciplined, principled, and rooted in the material interests of the working class.
Individualism is the poison of revolutionary politics, a bourgeois remnant that elevates personal ambition above collective struggle. It breeds factionalism, egoism, and detachment from the masses, turning revolution into a stage for self-promotion rather than proletarian liberation. The revolutionary vanguard must reject this cancer, embracing democratic centralism as the only safeguard against ideological rot. Debate is essential, but discipline is paramount—criticism must serve the struggle, not personal vanity. The movement advances only when it is willing to correct its course, purge opportunist tendencies, and forge ahead with unity, purpose, and unbreakable proletarian resolve.

Our main aim at this project has always been to spread class awareness and provide a working-class perspective on important topics. We hope to help foster the class consciousness that has been severely lacking in this country for decades.

Alongside this, we believe it’s essential to challenge the manufactured idea of our culture. The media sells us consumerism and a petty bourgeois "middle-class" imitation of culture—something far removed from the reality of working-class life.

While we often focus on sport and music, we must also reclaim film, theatre, poetry, and artistry. These are not the exclusive domains of the ruling classes, who feed us mindless drivel. Our history is rich with working-class creativity—insightful, inspiring, and deeply rooted in struggle and resilience.

Percy Shelley's Men of England is one such masterpiece of working-class poetry.

We will share a poem from working-class culture every fortnight on a Monday. If you have a suggestion—or even one of your own—you’d like to contribute, send it in for consideration.

"The Earth was made a common treasury for all."

— Gerrard Winstanley

From the very start of the Ukraine conflict, Russia made it clear that actual and physical NATO involvement in the war was a unacceptable. Given that one of the central reasons for this war is NATO’s continued expansion toward Russia’s borders, this should have been obvious to everyone. But imperialist powers never acknowledge their own provocations, they only frame their actions as "defensive" while they encircle and strangle any nation that resists them.

Now, as the war drags on and Ukraine faces mounting losses, the U.S. and Russia are engaged in direct peace talks. Without Ukraine, without the EU, and certainly without the UK. Zelensky, hero image now faded and reduced to nothing more than a Western puppet, scrambles to "assert" that no deal can be made without Ukraine’s input. But the reality is, Ukraine has no sovereignty in this matter. The country was sold off the moment the U.S. and NATO transformed it into a proxy battlefield against Russia. Every major decision, whether it be continuing the war or negotiating its end, is dictated by Washington, while they allow the war to continue until "the last Ukrainian".

Starmer’s attempt to posture as a bold leader—floating the idea of British troop deployments and insisting that the UK must be part of the peace process—is both pathetic and laughable. The U.S. completely ignored him, proving once again that Britain is nothing more than a loyal lapdog for American imperialism. Even Germany has rejected Starmer’s rhetoric, making it clear that Europe is deeply divided on how to proceed. The EU, for all its self-importance, is powerless to shape the outcome of this war. Their role has been reduced to funding and arming Ukraine at the behest of Washington, further tightening the noose around Europe’s economy while the U.S. exploits the situation for its own benefit.

This entire situation exposes the core reality of imperialist geopolitics: the only voices that truly matter are those of the dominant imperialist powers. Ukraine, the UK, and the EU are nothing more than vassals in the broader struggle between U.S. hegemony and Russia’s resistance to encirclement. The working class, whether in Ukraine, Russia, or Europe, gains nothing from this war—only more suffering, more austerity, and more exploitation at the hands of their own ruling classes.

The lesson here is clear: imperialism cannot be reasoned with, only dismantled. The people of Ukraine have been sacrificed on the altar of hegemony for the false promises of NATO membership. The European working class must reject their ruling elites’ subservience to Washington and fight against the militarisation of the continent. And the British left must expose Starmer and the Labour Party for what they truly are—agents of imperialism, no different from their Tory predecessors.

At the end of the day, this war is a U.S.-Russia affair. Everyone else is just a proxy, a pawn in a much larger imperialist chessboard. The only way forward is resistance against NATO, against war, and against the capitalist class that profits from endless bloodshed.

Translation of above:
Great Britain is ready to "help" Ukraine with airspace patrolling.

Of course, at Zelensky's request. Of course, to protect against Russian aggression.

But those who are at least a little familiar with history know that imperialists have never deployed peacekeeping missions anywhere to protect someone. This is to ensure a military presence in the region under the guise of democracy. To protect their interests. In other words, this is called "occupation".

And if an agreement is reached on the deployment of peacekeepers from non-NATO countries in Ukraine, the same form of military presence will receive a completely different content, maintaining security. This is the dialectic.

On this day, 19 February 1954 the Brazilian footballing legend, doctor and dictatorship-resistor Sócrates was born. Playing for Corinthians, a historically working class team, Sócrates co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement opposing the brutal US-backed dictatorship. In 1982 they won the state championship with "Democracia" emblazoned on their shirts. When he moved to Italy and was asked which Italian he respected the most, Mazzola or Rivera (football players of Inter and AC Milan, respectively), he responded: "I don't know them. I'm here to read Gramsci in original language and to study the history of the workers' movement" (referring to Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci).

Airbnb Outside the Gaeltacht.

This year, as with last year, Airbnb is advertising “Seachtain na Gaeilge” (Irish Language Week) for several houses in the Gaeltacht. It is claimed that this is a way to experience the culture and language. In reality, the housing crisis is a major reason for the decline of the Gaeltacht, with Airbnb having a terrible impact.

At present, there are too many hotels or holiday homes, while at the same time there is a lack of housing for people to live in. The same problem is seen across the country, and in the Gaeltacht, it is a major challenge to protect and develop the Irish-speaking community. Especially for workers and young people, the cost is far too high. At the very least, there should be a complete ban on Airbnb, not only in the Gaeltacht but throughout Ireland.

The state media greatly praises Airbnb’s campaign one day, and the next day they seem to support the reduction of the Irish language in public life. It is clear that the language is not seen as a living entity but as a product, and that the Gaeltacht is being turned into a tourist resort.

Only the working people can change this system; the language must be promoted in the People’s Republic of Ireland. There must be resistance to capitalist and imperialist forces, best exemplified by the prisoners in Maghaberry fighting for their language rights. As the volunteer Máirtín Ó Cadhain said:

"Ireland will not only be Irish but free, and not only free and Irish but the Ireland of Séamas Ó Conaola, a Workers’ Republic."

A fantastic historical poster up in the Casa Bar, Hope Street, Liverpool.

This mass meeting, held during what became known as 'The Great Unrest', was a pivotal moment in working-class history. A time when trade unions could mobilise mass movements without the suffocating anti-trade union laws of today. Yet, freedom from legal constraints never meant freedom from repression. Just weeks after this gathering at St. George’s Plateau, workers engaged in a peaceful strike were met with brutal violence. Police batons rained down, and the state’s response escalated to mobilising the soldiers—two workers were shot dead as troops fired on the demonstrators.

Around the same period, the Tonypandy riots exposed a similar truth: when Welsh coal miners struck for fair pay and conditions, the state unleashed violence to protect capitalist interests, crushing the workers' demands with police batons and military intervention.

These events lay bare a simple fact: the ruling class will use any means, legislation, baton, or bullet, to defend their profits and power. Peaceful protest is met with violence because the exploiters fear nothing more than the organised working class imposing its will.

History proves it: class contradictions don’t resolve through kindness or compromise—they end in struggle. And when the workers rise, the ruling class retaliates.

In the Korean People's Army of the DPRK, participation in the armed forces is an honour. You fight to DEFEND the nation, defending the prosperity and happiness of the people under a planned economy where all the essentials including fulfilling work, healthy food, housing, excellent childcare and children's education, adult education, healthcare and social care for all elders, who get to retire at 55-yrs for women, 60 years for men. You also get to learn logistics which are regularly used to help build up the nation's critical infrastructure when there is no direct war. The DPRK never has to connoscript soldiers. They have a 600-700k volunteer army (compared to Britain's ~140k and have 5M willing reserves who will fight on a minute's notice to defend the nation's independence sovereignty and prosperity.

Compare that to Britain, where the coming compulsory connoscription service in the armed forces is an oppression forced on the poorest, not to defend the nation's prosperity (there is none) nor its independence, but to increase the profits of the ruling class of Britain, fighting on foreign lands to kill other workers who are simply trying to defend their nation from the predatory attack of US imperialism, of which Britain is a vassal state.

The contrast could not be more stark.
