This is an utterly pathetic response from the Unite union which is supposed to represent workers in the steel industry. As always the owners of British Steel (formerly a nationalised company) are demanding more handouts from the government and the union, instead of demanding that the steel industry be nationalised to preserve it, instead grovel, beg and whine to the government and the owners. To call this pathetic would be an understatement. It is treachery from the Unite leadership, it is collaboration with the deindustrialisation of the country and the destruction of a vital industry. The union leaders are traitors to the working class and must be exposed as such. With regard to the steel industry we should demand:

1) Immediate nationalisation of all plants were the private owners are threatening lay offs.

2) A plan for the revitalisation of steel production in Britain to end the process of the destruction of the steel industry

3) That such a plan be drawn up with the direct input of elected workers representatives.

When a woman’s wages are insufficient to keep her alive, the sale of favours seems a possible subsidiary occupation. The hypocritical morality of bourgeois society encourages prostitution by the structure of its exploitative economy, while at the same time mercilessly covering with contempt any girl or woman who is forced to take this path.

The black shadow of prostitution stalks the legal marriage of bourgeois society. History has never before witnessed such a growth of prostitution as occurred in the last part of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. In Berlin there is one prostitute for every twenty so-called honest women. In Paris the ratio is one to eighteen and in London one to nine. There are different types of prostitution: there is open prostitution that is legal and subject to regulation, and there is the secret, “seasonal” type, All forms of prostitution flourish like a poisonous flower in the swamps of the bourgeois way of life.

The world of the bourgeoisie does not even spare children, forcing young girls of nine and ten into the sordid embraces of wealthy and depraved old men. In the capitalist countries there are brothels which specialise exclusively in very young girls. In this present post-war period every woman faces the possibility of unemployment. Unemployment hits women in particular, and causes an enormous increase in the army of “street women”. Hungry crowds of women seeking out the buyers of “white slaves” flood the evening streets of Berlin. Paris and the other civilised centres of the capitalist states. The trade in women’s flesh is conducted quite openly, which is not surprising when you consider that the whole bourgeois way of life is based on buying and selling. There is an undeniable element of material and economic, considerations even the most legal of marriages. Prostitution is the way out for the woman who fails to find herself a permanent breadwinner. Prostitution, under capitalism provides men with the opportunity of having sexual relationships without having to take upon themselves the responsibility of caring materially for the women until the grave.

Capitalism loves to parade itself as the great liberator of women. No longer shackled to the kitchen sink, we’re told women are now “empowered”—free to work, free to divorce, free to chase careers, and free to sell their own flesh under the polished branding of “sex work.” But beneath the shiny liberal rhetoric lies the same old exploitation, repackaged to suit the market.

Alexandra Kollontai wrote nearly a century ago that prostitution was not the result of individual immorality, but a systemic outcome of women’s economic dependence under capitalism. She argued that as long as women lacked economic security, they would be forced, whether through direct coercion or the quiet violence of poverty, into commodifying themselves to survive. Her words echo louder than ever today as it does for all proletarians.

The capitalist system hasn’t eliminated prostitution; it has diversified it. The brothel has become the OnlyFans account. The pimp has been replaced by platform algorithms. Pornography, cam work, all are modern iterations of the same fundamental transaction: the sale of intimacy, affection, and sexual access in exchange for money. And it’s dressed up as “empowerment,” because the system now markets exploitation as a choice.

What Kollontai understood, and what liberal feminism fails to confront, is that real liberation isn’t the freedom to sell yourself. It’s the freedom not to have to. Until women are economically secure, until social reproduction is no longer a private burden shouldered disproportionately by working-class women, prostitution in all its forms will persist—not as empowerment, but as survival.
