Welfare Reforms – Benefits
The British welfare state as we know it today came into existence after World War 2 with the reforms of 1945 to 1951. After two devastating wars, the world had to begin the long and arduous process…

Labour protest in Finland: a strike is coming in February
The Teollisuusliitto industrial union has announced a new two-day strike from February 1st.
“The union is stopping the work of the Kokkola and Kilpilahti industrial zones on February 1 and 2, 2024,” said the head of the union, Riku Aalto.
Neste, which is considered one of the world's leading producers of renewable fuel, is ready to join the action.
The purpose of the strike is to protest the labor market reform actively promoted by the government. The document envisages a serious tightening of labor conditions: a ban on strikes, simplification of dismissals, reduction of benefits and allowances.
“The government’s policies are a serious blow to the benefits, rights and working conditions of workers. Therefore, employees have no choice but to pay in kind,” said Neste representative Sami Ryynänen.
On December 14, a large-scale trade union strike took place in Finland, organized by the Central Association of Trade Unions (SAK). About 100 thousand people took part in it. Losses from the strike amounted to approximately 100-130 million euros.

Some men, faint-hearted, ever seek
Our programme to retouch,
And will insist, whene’er they speak
That we demand too much.
’Tis passing strange, yet I declare
Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
We only want the earth.
“Be moderate,” the trimmers cry,
Who dread the tyrants’ thunder.
“ You ask too much and people fly
From you aghast in wonder.”
’Tis passing strange, for I declare
Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
We only want the earth.
Our masters all a godly crew,
Whose hearts throb for the poor,
Their sympathies assure us, too,
If our demands were fewer.
Most generous souls! But please observe,
What they enjoy from birth
Is all we ever had the nerve
To ask, that is, the earth.
The “labour fakir” full of guile,
Base doctrine ever preaches,
And whilst he bleeds the rank and file
Tame moderation teaches.
Yet, in despite, we’ll see the day
When, with sword in its girth,
Labour shall march in war array
To realize its own, the earth.
For labour long, with sighs and tears,
To its oppressors knelt.
But never yet, to aught save fears,
Did the heart of tyrant melt.
We need not kneel, our cause is high
Of true men there's no dearth
And our victorious rallying cry
Shall be we want the earth!
Our programme to retouch,
And will insist, whene’er they speak
That we demand too much.

🇬🇧💣✈️Conflict Escalating in the Red Sea🇺🇸💥🇾🇪
Britain is getting ready to conduct airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi militants following a series of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The US and another European nation will join in the airstrikes as well.
London and Washington were expected to release a joint statement later on Sunday, warning the Houthis to immediately cease their attacks or face military action from the West. The message was intended as a “final warning.”
Although the statement was never made, The US military today reported that it eliminated 10 Houthi combatants and destroyed three of the Yemeni armed group’s boats following a confrontation in the Red Sea.

🇬🇧🥼💰UK Doctors Strike for 26% Pay Increase and Hourly Wage Restoration 🇬🇧🥼💰
Demanding a 26 percent salary increase to offset the decline in purchasing power since 2008, over 75,000 resident doctors in England began a six-day strike on Wednesday.
Despite a 28-day work stoppage in 2023, doctors chose to prolong their protest following unsuccessful negotiations between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the UK government. In the summer of 2023, doctors rejected an 8.8 percent salary hike, insisting on the desired 26 percent increase.
BMA spokesperson Robert Laurenson highlighted that the growing waiting lists, reaching 7.6 million people over fifteen years, are not solely a pandemic consequence but also a result of mismanagement.
Laurenson emphasized the doctors' plea for a gradual increase in hourly salaries from £14 to £21, stating that they had already lost 26 percent of their earnings and were merely seeking restoration.

The largest mass strike since 1948 began in Germany
Farmers, train drivers, drivers, doctors, fishermen, teachers, catering workers and other industries will take part in the general strike. They oppose government plans to reduce or eliminate subsidies, which are about to be canceled due to financial problems.
As often happens, the authorities began to get out of the crisis situation at the expense of the working class: the hole in the budget will be closed by reducing social programs and benefits. The main demands of the workers are to maintain the social package, reduce the working week from 38 to 35 hours while maintaining wages, bonuses to compensate for inflation, and the lifting of the ban on general strikes.
Participants threaten large-scale road closures. The police, which are being put on high security, are preparing for unrest.

🛳🚫✊German Farmers Protest Agriculture Laws Made by EU🇩🇪🚜🌾
A collective of farmers, discontented with cost-cutting measures affecting Germany's agriculture, prevented the vice chancellor of the EU country from disembarking a ferry on Thursday.
Germany's economy and climate minister, Robert Habeck, encountered obstacles preventing him from disembarking the vessel. Authorities stated that farmers obstructed a pier in Schluettsiel along the North Sea coast, compelling Habeck to return to the small island of Hooge, where he was vacationing.
Last month, Chancellor Olaf Scholz faced substantial criticism from farmers following his administration's unpopular decision to reduce subsidies in the agricultural sector. Farmers organized a protest in Berlin during that time and have committed to staging additional demonstrations in the future.

"Furthermore, to the same degree in which the division of labour increases, is the labour simplified. The special skill of the labourer becomes worthless. He becomes transformed into a simple monotonous force of production, with neither physical nor mental elasticity. His work becomes accessible to all; therefore competitors press upon him from all sides. Moreover, it must be remembered that the more simple, the more easily learned the work is, so much the less is its cost to production, the expense of its acquisition, and so much the lower must the wages sink – for, like the price of any other commodity, they are determined by the cost of production. Therefore, in the same manner in which labour becomes more unsatisfactory, more repulsive, do competition increase and wages decrease."
