House GOP faces sudden flood of retirements after holiday break

In an election cycle marked by an unusually high number of congressional retirements, House Republicans are facing a burst of new retirement announcements as they return from the holiday recess.

Why it matters: Members have complained that the chaos of last year and the overarching decline in legislative productivity makes Congress a less fruitful place to work, especially for less publicity-hungry lawmakers.

Some have also lamented the increasingly partisan, aggressive and event violent nature of contemporary national political life.
Driving the news: Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) became the latest to announce his retirement, saying in a statement on Monday that "it became clear to me over the Christmas holiday ... that the time has come to bring my season in public service to a conclusion."

That follows announcements from Reps. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) and Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.). All three are senior members of their respective committees who have been in Congress more than a decade.
Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah) also announced that he's jumping into the race for retiring Sen. Mitt Romney's (R-Utah) seat after initially passing on a run.
And Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) announced that his resignation to become president of Youngstown State University will take effect on Jan. 21, more than a month and a half earlier than expected.

Ray Epps, an FBI agent, the only January 6 protester who actually told people to go into the Capitol, has been officially sentenced to one year probation, $500 restitution, and 100 hours community service.

While many J6 protesters are rotting in jail for non-violent crimes, Epps escapes a prison term entirely.

Indiana Man Who Produced Child Porn Found Dead in Federal Prison

An Indiana man convicted of producing child pornography has been found dead in federal prison.

Romio Hawkins, 26, of Portage, Indiana, was serving a 20-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Milan, Michigan.

Romio Hawkins, 26, of Portage, Indiana, died behind bars in Milan, Michigan, the Associated Press reported, citing the Bureau of Prisons. 
The BOP did not immediately respond to The Messenger's request for comment and declined to elaborate on Hawkins’ in-custody death, per the AP.

Hawkins was found unresponsive Monday. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. 
In 2022, he pleaded guilty to production of material depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to federal prosecutors. 

Hawkins confessed to convincing a 16-year-old to produce images and live videos of herself and a 4-year-old “engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Additionally, Hawkins admitted to law enforcement that he possessed over 1,000 images and 300 videos containing child pornography, including materials featuring toddlers and infants,” a news release stated.
In addition to a 20-year prison sentence, Hawkins was sentenced to five years of supervised release.

Another Hoosier will exit Congress at the end of the 2024 term after U.S. Rep. Greg Pence announced his departure on X Tuesday — creating a fourth open Indiana seat.

Pence, brother of former Indiana Gov. and Vice President Mike Pence, represents the 6th Congressional District, which covers central eastern Indiana and some counties south of Marion County — including his hometown of Columbus.
Greg Pence joined the Marine Corps in 1979, rising to the rank of first lieutenant after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago, according to his congressional bio. Following his honorable discharge, he joined the energy distribution industry and currently serves on Congress’ energy committee.

The SEC approves 11 spot bitcoin ETFs.

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - The U.S. securities regulator on Wednesday approved the first U.S.-listed exchange traded funds (ETFs) to track bitcoin, its Chair Gary Gensler said, in a watershed for the world's largest cryptocurrency and the broader crypto industry.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved 11 applications, including from BlackRock (BLK.N), Ark Investments, 21Shares (ABTC.S), Fidelity, Invesco (IVZ.N) and VanEck, among others, according to a notice on its website. Some products are expected to begin trading as early as Thursday.

Eight state lawmakers will not seek reelection ahead of 2024 legislative session

Since 2012, an average of about 13 state lawmakers per election cycle have opted not to run for reelection, either to retire or seek a different office.

Three more state lawmakers have announced they won’t run for reelection this year ahead of the start of the 2024 legislative session.

Rep. Ryan Hatfield (D-Evansville) this week became the first Democrat this election cycle to announce he wouldn’t seek another term in his Statehouse seat. Instead, after eight years in office, he’s running for circuit court judge.

Rep. Randy Lyness (R-West Harrison) and Rep. Dennis Zent (R-Angola) aren’t running for any office this year, announcing recently they’ll retire after nine and 12 years in their Statehouse seats, respectively.

🚨BREAKING: Chair of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan launches inquiry into Fani Willis' lover, Nathan Wade, after it was revealed he has been paid over $650,000 of taxpayer money to act as Special Assistant District Attorney to prosecute Donald Trump in Fulton County.

Wade, a private attorney, has never prosecuted a felony case before. Wade also billed Fulton County for at least two meetings with the White House, expenses that were directly approved by Fani Willis, raising suspicions that the prosecution is being done in collaboration with the White House Counsel's office.
