The Merrillville Police Department has found no evidence to support rumors that buses full of illegal immigrants are arriving in the town.
While some people from other countries have been seen in the area, they are primarily panhandlers or setting up small camps.
The Town of Merrillville does not have sanctuary status, despite claims made on some websites. The police department has been investigating online posts and found many of the pictures to be fake or showing buses carrying legal workers.

Derek Schmitt replaces Mark Messmer in Indiana Senate after private GOP caucus vote
Dubois County Councilman Daryl Schmitt is the newest member of the Indiana Senate after a private Republican caucus chose Schmitt Wednesday night to replace Mark Messmer.
Messmer left the Senate earlier this year halfway through his term after winning the Eighth Congressional District primary.
Schmitt said a top priority will be “driving decisions local.” And ahead of a budget session in which taxes will be a top debate, Schmitt told the Republican precinct caucus members that he pledges to visit every local taxing unit in his district — county, city and town governments — over the next 12 months.
“Reason for that is to gain a better understanding, so I can represent our views at the state level,” Schmitt said.
Schmitt said the state needs to focus on getting Christian values into government and schools.
Schmitt becomes the 37th current legislator who first joined the General Assembly via private caucus. He will serve out Messmer’s term, which ends in November 2026.
COLBERT COMMENT: “What is a private GOP caucus vote”? The GOP Precinct Committeeman of Dubious County should have ALL voted on Messmers replacement. Did only a handful of PC’s attend a secret meeting to determine the replacement? Did the Dubious County Chairman create a “rule” to assure an outcome? I’ve been questioning a lot of the Republican Rules arbitrarily being created to illicit a predetermined response.
Messmer lied on video about receiving AIPAC lobbying money 💰. I even questioned him privately regarding his response; he stood by his position of zero, nada, no donations of any kind. The FEC have public records regarding contributions to politicians…..there are cash donations and in-kind contributions from AIPAC in excess of $1 million dollars. The reports do not lie. He is another Senator Young 2.0 WARNING ⚠️ Messmer refuses to debate his opponents. Voters must demand transparency from our elected officials.

Wife of Deputy Asson Hacker files wrongful death lawsuit
The wife of a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy who died during a training exercise is filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
The plaintiffs listed include the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Evansville Police, The City of Evansville, and Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (SWILEA).
The complaint claims Deputy Asson Hacker’s 14th Amendment rights were recklessly violated, which lead to his death.
the coroner says his cause of death was “exertional sickling” due to sickle cell trait.
The complaint shows Deputy Hacker was taking part in SWILEA’s training in order to become a full time, sworn law enforcement officer.
It shows part of that training included “The Big Fight,” which was scheduled for March 2, 2023.
The complaint shows Deputy Hacker was paired with a Major from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, who was also an instructor for SWILEA.
It shows the Major choked, strangled, hit, punched, kicked, and body slammed Deputy Hacker, and on several occasions, he wasn’t able to breath.
The complaint claims the fight was a form of hazing, as opposed to legitimate training.
It claims the fight went on longer than it was supposed to, and Deputy Hacker is shown on video lying motionless on the floor.

If approved, the funds would be distributed to six organizations focused on reaching populations most vulnerable to opioid abuse, and working with them in what research has found to be their most influential moments.
If approved, the organizations and programs receiving funds would be:
YWCA Evansville: Say YES! To Sobriety and Self-Sufficiency - $200,000
Evansville Rescue Mission: Recovery Program of the Evansville Rescue Mission - $150,000
