The wife of a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy who died during a training exercise is filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
The plaintiffs listed include the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Evansville Police, The City of Evansville, and Southwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (SWILEA).
The complaint claims Deputy Asson Hacker’s 14th Amendment rights were recklessly violated, which lead to his death.
the coroner says his cause of death was “exertional sickling” due to sickle cell trait.
The complaint shows Deputy Hacker was taking part in SWILEA’s training in order to become a full time, sworn law enforcement officer.
It shows part of that training included “The Big Fight,” which was scheduled for March 2, 2023.
The complaint shows Deputy Hacker was paired with a Major from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, who was also an instructor for SWILEA.
It shows the Major choked, strangled, hit, punched, kicked, and body slammed Deputy Hacker, and on several occasions, he wasn’t able to breath.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV)— Tonight, Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry requested that Evansville City Council approve the distribution of more than $1.2 million in Opioid Settlement Funds to organizations helping battle the opioid epidemic.
If approved, the funds would be distributed to six organizations focused on reaching populations most vulnerable to opioid abuse, and working with them in what research has found to be their most influential moments.
If approved, the organizations and programs receiving funds would be:

Evansville Restaurant Operator Sentenced for Scheme to Employ Undocumented Workers
– Kent Dam, 55, of Evansville, Indiana, was sentenced to time served in federal court after pleading guilty to transporting and harboring undocumented workers and money laundering.
Gracie’s Chinese Cuisine, which is operated by Dam and his wife, also pleaded guilty to unlawful employment of undocumented workers, and received two years’ probation and a $15,000 fine.
According to court documents, in June 2020, Homeland Security Investigations began an investigation into Dam and the operations at Gracie’s Chinese Cuisine as part of an ongoing multistate investigation into the smuggling, transporting, harboring and employment of undocumented workers. Agents were told that a human smuggler was facilitating the exploitation of undocumented laborers by delivering them to businesses. On multiple occasions, the smuggler drove the undocumented workers from another state to Gracie Chinese Cuisine’s and to two residences owned by Dam on West Wortman Road in Evansville.
Dam and his wife personally paid the smuggler for delivering workers to the West Wortman Road residences.
During the investigation, surveillance of the restaurant and Dam’s two residences showed that Dam regularly drove from his primary residence to the West Wortman Road residences and picked up four to six people, then drove to Gracie Chinese Cuisine’s.
At the restaurant, Dam and the workers exited the vehicle and entered through the back door. At the end of the day, Dam drove the workers from Gracie’s back to the residences on Wortman Road, before returning to his primary residence.
On October 21, 2020, the vehicle Dam was driving was stopped by officers for a traffic violation. Dam was driving with five passengers at the time.
All the passengers said they worked in the kitchen at Gracie’s and lived at the Wortman Road residence. Two individuals said that they had been working at the restaurant for 3 months, one said he had been there for 7.5 years, and the others fell somewhere in between. Some claimed that they paid Dam rent to live at the Wortman residence, others said they lived there for free. The workers stated that they were paid by Dam monthly, either by check or with an envelope of cash.
One individual said that he was paid $800 per month, another said that he was paid $2,500 per month, and the others fell somewhere in between.
Additionally, the workers said that Dam did not ask them to complete the standard employment forms regarding citizenship and taxes. Some claimed that they did not even have to show Dam identification to get a job.
Two of the workers stated that they were brought to Dam’s restaurant by a smuggler.
“The defendant paid for smuggled, undocumented workers to exploit in furtherance of his own greed,” said Zachary A. Myers, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. “This prosecution and sentence demonstrate that the Department of Justice and our law enforcement partners will work tirelessly to ensure that those who unlawfully exploit trafficked persons are held accountable.”
“This individual exploited undocumented workers to enrich himself,” said Special Agent in Charge Justin Campbell of IRS-CI’s Chicago Field Office. “Today’s sentencing is a critical reminder that there are consequences for human trafficking and money laundering.”
Homeland Security Investigations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigated the case in conjunction with IRS Criminal Investigation. The Indiana State Police provided invaluable assistance. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young. As part of the sentence, Judge Young ordered that Dam pay a $35,000 fine and that he forfeit to the United States his 2017 Toyota Tundra truck, which he used to transport the undocumented workers.

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry is asking the City Council to distribute more than $1.2 million in Opioid Settlement Funds to a half dozen organizations.
The organizations include the YMCA, Evansville Rescue Mission, Vanderburgh County Mental Health Court, and the Women’s Hospital.
The largest allocations would go to the Evansville Police Department and Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.
Mayor Terry says the city sees opportunities to reach the homeless population, as wells as those in the criminal justice system.
Terry says the committee that considered requests for the funding saw the choices as “real opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives,” and she agrees.
One group that did not make the list was the Evansville Recovery Alliance. That led to feedback from the alliance’s supporters on the mayor’s Facebook page.
The city council may consider the allocations at its September 23rd meeting.

I attended the city counsel meeting. The city police representative is reserving the money to pay overtime pay to police officers. This is “creative financing” to use allocated resources set aside for drug rehab to offset shortfalls in the police budgets. Perhaps the budget for useless DEI programs would be redirected to the police budget and use the “drug rehab” money for it’s intended purpose.
There will be several residents attending the the city counsel meeting to assist the city in appropriating the funds. Come join us! This is your government.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (U.S. Department of Commerce) (NIST) standard states that CVRs are not confidential information, yet the Indiana Secretary of State office refuses to instruct county clerks to release them. Is the Secretary of State office violating this federal standard? Some clerks claim they were instructed that it was illegal for them to look at CVRs. If this is the case, how can clerks confidently certify their own elections? This renders the machines useless.

Indiana First Action met with Secretary of State Diego Morales and Kegan Prentice showing them the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) positions on CVRs and other states’ published CVRs. Was the Indiana Election Division’s guidance in error (Page 333 of 2024 Indiana Election Administrator’s Manual?)
Indiana First Action was told all of the vendors and the Indiana Election Division were called into Luke Britt’s office to discuss the dozens of complaints filed, and that no one at that meeting knew what a CVR was exactly.

Why did Senator Greg Walker push so hard to put forth a bill (SB224) deeming CVRs to be made private under state law when they are for the public?

If our elections are safe and secure, there should be no hesitation by our elected and appointed officials to release this information. However, no transparency, no trust. Similarly, Indiana’s Jim Banks, a former Congressman and now a candidate for U.S. Senate, has shown a concerning alignment with the Military-Industrial Complex through his voting record from 2017 to the present.

Bills to grant driver’s licenses to illegal aliens are gaining momentum in Indiana. In both legislative chambers, these bills have passed their initial committees of reference.
If Indiana does pass a driver’s license bill for illegal aliens that is signed by Governor Eric Holcomb (R), it would be the first state completely controlled by Republicans to do so and would be complicit in the Biden administration’s efforts to circumvent our nation’s immigration laws.
The Senate Bill, SB 248, sponsored by Senator Blake Doriot (R-Goshen) would issue a “driving privilege card” to illegal aliens who show proof they have paid taxes for at least one year, submit fingerprints for a criminal background check, and have auto insurance. Senator Doriot claims the driving privileges cards are needed because these individuals “are participating in our economy, in our society.
It is unlawful for illegal aliens to work in the United States. (8 USC 1324a)
SB 248 narrowly passed the Senate Homeland Security and Transportation Committee on February 7 by a 5-4 vote.
House Bill (HB) 1050 sponsored by Representative Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) differs from SB 248.
It purports not to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens but rather only to individuals with “lawful status” including individuals paroled into the United States, those with a pending or approved application for asylum, those with a pending or approved application for temporary protected status, or those with an approved deferred action status. But by doing this, HB 1050 essentially gives a driver’s license to every individual the Biden Administration is allowing into the country contrary to our immigration laws. Many state Attorney Generals, including Indiana’s Attorney General Todd Rokita, have challenged the Biden Administration’s immigration policies, yet now Indiana lawmakers want to grant a driver’s license to those individuals who benefitted from those unlawful policies that contravene our immigration laws.. This bill which appears to limit the issuance of driver’s licenses in reality will provide them to practically every alien.
On February 7, HB 1050 unanimously passed the House Roads and Transportation Committee, which is chaired by Representative Pressel, the bill’s sponsor. It has been referred to the Ways and Means Committee.
It is ironic that Republican-controlled Indiana is now considering giving driver’s licenses to illegal aliens at all. In 2021, US Senator Mike Braun (R-Indiana) cosponsored federal legislation that would block funding to states that granted driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. When the legislation was introduced, Senator Braun said, “illegal immigrants should not be granted driver’s licenses in any state. It’s a threat to national security, complicates the already extremely challenging work of immigration enforcement, and is an affront to those who come to America the right way in accordance with the law.”
Moreover, granting driver’s licenses to illegal aliens frustrates the intent of the REAL ID Act enacted by Congress after 9-11. The goal of the REAL ID Act was to ensure that those individuals in the country illegally with the intent to do us harm are not provided with the documents to facilitate their mission. The nineteen 9-11 terrorists had 30 state-issued identification cards and driver’s licenses between them.
If Indiana does pass legislation to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens and it is signed by Governor Holcomb, it will be the 19th state to enact such legislation and it will have the dubious distinction of being the first Republican-controlled state to do so.
