The 2nd prototype of the Boeing B-29 had just been completed, and was still top secret at the time, when the entire crew was approved to go up together in a celebratory flight, which was set to take place on Thrusday, Feb. 18, 1943.

Edmund "Eddie" Allen, considered to be Boeing's top test pilot took the plane up that day, and all 11 crew members abord the plane died when it crashed into a meat packing plant in Seattle, along with 20 workers of the plant.

What articles don't mention, because it was classified, was that a 12th member of the crew who developed and built the plane did not go up that day, and so didn't die in the blaze. He was declared a "critical war asset", and never allowed to go up in a plane again until after the war was over, and the B-29s had dropped the payloads they were designed for on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

My paternal grandfather was that 12th man. He lived on a farm in Kent Washington, where my father grew up, and was schedule to be on that plane as well. He was the Chief of Protype and Flight Test Engineering at Boeing for the B-29, and the principal engineer on two main systems (the first ever dual pressurized cockpits, and the landing gear). (Grandpa and Eddie Allen never got along. Allen was supposedly a "walking ego", but my grandpa was a real nerdy engineer so that might have been just his perspective on an extrovert).

It was a very rural area with one main access road at the time, and a lot of neighborhood farms that depended on using it. That morning my Grandfather left to go to the airfield and a large tree had fallen into the road. He was one of the few people in the area with equipment capable of clearing the road, so he called Boeing and told the team to go up without him, then got to work on the tree.

Later that night he found out his entire team had died in the accident. To this day we don't know if it was a system failure, or espionage that attempted to kill the project. For another 2.5 years the B-29 project was one of the most highly resourced projects at Boeing. At one point a B-29 would fly in every day from another plant (Oklahoma??) and Seattle would strip it's engines off for tear down analysis, and swap a different set of engines on, and it would fly back to the main manufacturing plant.

It was finally on August 6 & 9, 1945 that the atomic bombs were dropped in Japan, and they surrendered on Aug 15, 1945. Seven days later on 8/22/45 my father was born.

So I would not be here if that tree hadn't fallen down, or if Grandpa hadn't put his neighbors first and stayed to clear it!
