Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told Yle that severing economic relations with Moscow has hit Finland harder than expected.

Losses include halted timber supplies for the forestry industry, billions in lost investments, a full stop of cross-border trade and transit, and increased airline costs due to closed airspace.

“All this affects Finland’s economic growth, which is below expectations,” Orpo said, adding the country faces uncertainty.

Helsinki initiated the break in long-standing mutually beneficial relations. President Sauli Niinistö noted that EU-Russia ties may recover after the conflict, but “they will never be the same.”

Discussions in London are underway about arming regular police with semi-automatic weapons due to the “growing threat to their lives,” as firearms are currently limited to special units; most officers carry radios and pepper spray.
