🇷🇺🇺🇦Former German Chancellor Schroeder said that during the talks in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia were ready to conclude an agreement to end the war, but the agreements were thwarted by "powerful forces."

He said this while speaking at an event organized by the Swiss publication Weltwoche, Die Welt reports.

Schroeder said that he proposed a compromise on the settlement between Ukraine and Russia.

This plan implied that Donbass would remain part of Ukraine, and a "South Tyrolean solution" was proposed for Crimea - that is, the creation of a Russian enclave. The plan also excluded the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.

But, according to Schroeder,
"the government of Volodymyr Zelensky was unable to make a decision freely. More powerful circles behind Zelensky would have blocked peace.
