Matt is a nerd with a lot of free time that was socially retarded enough to think that he could impress Japanese people by writing out obscure kanji and only now after 10 years and having to move to Japan has he acquired the self-awareness necessary to behave like a normal person, despite the fact that he is anything but a normal person. I think he's just coping now that he realizes how many people are better at kanji than him. He failed at being the obsessed nerd. Sure being able to write your address is useful but who on Earth would be "impressed" by it beyond the "日本語上手!" stage? Japan uses a fuck ton of paperwork and you have to write your address all the time.
