Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has stated that Denmark is considering invoking NATO Article 4 following recent drone intrusion over airports and airbases in the country, which officials state was an “attack” carried out by a “professional actor”…
Prior to both Estonia and Poland, and now possibly Denmark, invoking NATO Article 4 this month, the last time that a member of the alliance requested consultations under Article 4 was at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Germany’s Defense Ministry is reporting that a pair of Russian “Luch-Olymp-K” Signals-Surveillance Satellites are actively “shadowing” two Intelsat-operated communication satellites utilized by the German Armed Forces and NATO, stating that the ongoing action is a “fundamental threat” against NATO by Russia.

In September 2018, France’s Minister of the Armed Forces claimed that in 2017 a Luch-Olymp-K Satellite had crept close to the “Athena-Fidus” Telecommunication Satellite, operated jointly by France and Italy and used for secure military communications and the planning of operations by NATO, calling it an “Act of Espionage.” Previous maneuvers by Russia’s Olymp-K have caused serious concern and a number of classified meetings by the U.S. Department of Defense.

NATO Allies are divided over whether the alliance should make it a policy to shoot down Russian fighter jets that violate NATO’s Airspace, with some countries including the United States, Poland and the Baltic States signaling that future violations should be met with force, while others, including Germany, urge more restraint from allies, according to CNN.

The issue reportedly came to a head during an emergency defense consultation meeting Tuesday requested by Estonia under NATO Article 4, which was called after Estonian Airspace was violated last week by several Russian MiG-31s over the Gulf of Finland. During the meeting, representatives from several countries, including Poland and Estonia, wanted the joint statement following the meeting to make clear that any additional violations by Russia, including from manned aircraft, would be met with lethal force, but Germany and some member countries in Southern Europe pushed to remove that language from the statement, claiming that it was too escalatory against Russia.

Even U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, the Commander of United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, urged restraint to any escalatory statement from NATO, suggesting that the Russian incursion into Estonia was likely accidental given the inexperience and insufficient training of pilots in the Russian Air Force. Only a day later however, President Donald J. Trump told reporters at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, that he believed NATO Allies should shoot down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace in Europe.

During a previously-not-made-public tense meeting earlier this week in Moscow, with the goal of deescalating tensions between Russia and NATO; British, French and German envoys told Russian officials that NATO is prepared to respond to further violations of its airspace with lethal force, according to sources with knowledge of the talks who spoke with Bloomberg.

During the talks, a Russian diplomat told the Europeans that the incursions were a response to Ukrainian strikes on Crimea, with the Kremlin stating those operations would not have been possible without NATO support and, as a result, Russia considers that it is already engaged in a confrontation involving Europe.
