President Donald J. Trump declined to say whether the federal officer who fatally shot a man in Minnesota this weekend had acted appropriately and said the administration was reviewing the incident, during an exclusive interview Sunday with The Wall Street Journal.

In a five-minute telephone interview, President Trump didn’t directly answer when asked twice whether the officer who shot Alex Pretti had done the right thing. Pressed further, the President said, “We’re looking, we’re reviewing everything and will come out with a determination.”

The President criticized Alex Pretti - the 37-year-old who was shot and killed by agents with U.S. Border Patrol on Saturday morning in Minneapolis - for carrying a gun during protest activity. “I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” Trump added. “But I don’t like it when somebody goes into a protest and he’s got a very powerful, fully loaded gun with two magazines loaded up with bullets also. That doesn’t play good either.”

Trump asserted that Pretti was carrying a “very dangerous gun, a dangerous and unpredictable gun,” adding, “It’s a gun that goes off when people don’t know it.” The Department of Homeland Security said Pretti was carrying a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, a gun which others have identified as a SIG Sauer P320.

The Israel Defense Force announced this morning that the remains of Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, the final deceased hostage remaining in the Gaza Strip, was discovered and recovered earlier today from a cemetery to the east of Gaza City.

Beginning this past weekend, Soldiers had begun the process of exhuming hundreds of bodies from the cemetery - following a tip from a captured member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) - with forensic experts using dental records, fingerprints, and other tests until they identified the remains of Master Sgt. Gvili.

Following a brief ceremony attended by Israeli Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the body of Master Sgt. Ran Gvili was returned to Israel. “For more than two years, we have been waiting for this moment, the return of the last hostage,” Zamir said. “The body of Ran Gvili has been found, and with this, in effect, one of our principal missions has come to an end: the return of all the hostages, the living and the fallen, to their homes, to their country, to their families.”

Following the recovery this morning of Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, the final deceased hostage remaining in the Gaza Strip, President Donald J. Trump spoke in an interview with Axios’ Barack Ravid, stating that Hamas had assisted in the recovery and now was the time for the group to follow through on its commitment to disarm in Gaza.

President Trump told Axios the search for the final body and the identification process was “very tough” because the search teams “had to go through hundreds of bodies” in the area. “It was a hard scene.” Trump gave Hamas credit for helping in the search efforts. “They worked very hard to get the body back. They were working with Israel on it. You can imagine how hard it was,” he said. “Now we have to disarm Hamas like they promised.”

President Donald J. Trump states that he had a “very good call” this morning with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying that they “seemed to be on a similar wavelength,” and that he would put him in contact with Tom Homan, the White House Border Czar.

Statement from the Office of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz following his call this morning with President Donald J. Trump:

“Governor Walz had a productive call with President Trump earlier today. The Governor made the case that we need impartial investigations of the Minneapolis shootings involving federal agents, and that we need to reduce the number of federal agents in Minnesota.

The President agreed that he would talk to his Department of Homeland Security about ensuring the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is able to conduct an independent investigation, as would ordinarily be the case.

The President also agreed to look into reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota and working with the state in a more coordinated fashion on immigration enforcement regarding violent criminals.

The Governor reminded President Trump that the Minnesota Department of Corrections already honors federal detainers by notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement when a person committed to its custody isn't a U.S. citizen.

There is not a single documented case of the department's releasing someone from state prison without offering to ensure a smooth transfer of custody.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt speaking to reporters earlier about this past weekend’s shooting in Minneapolis.

Reporter: “Secretary Noem said Alex Pretti committed an act of domestic terrorism. Stephen Miller labeled Pretti a domestic terrorist. Does the President agree with that?”

Leavitt: “I have not heard the President characterize Mr. Pretti in that way. However, I have heard the President say he wants to let the facts and the investigation lead itself.”
